  • This study aims to identify what effect self-growth programs has on self-esteem and career decision-making self-efficacy of female college students. As a result of the study, it was discovered that the self-growth program had a positive effect on improvement of general and academic self-esteem. The self-growth programs had a positive effect on all areas including selection of goals, information on job, problem-shooting and future plans out of the areas of career decision-making self-efficacy. The results of the study demonstrated that the self-growth programs had significant effect on improvement of self-esteem and career decision-making self-efficacy. To help college students respect themselves and others, set their own plans on their future jobs and be responsible for their future, more intensive and useful research on self-growth programs is needed.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of the gender, obesity rate, nutrition knowledge and dietary attitude on the dietary self-efficacy of adolescents. The subjects were 1,022 (518 male, 504 female), aged 13-17 years living in Busan, Masan, Jinju and Jinhae city. This survey was conducted from April 8 to April 22,2002 by questionnaires and data were analyzed by SPSS program. The results are summarized as follows. Nutrition knowledge scores and dietary self-efficacy scores of the females were higher than those of the males. The higher the nutrition knowledge and dietary attitude scores, the higher dietary self-efficacy. Dietary attitude has direct effects on dietary self-efficacy and obesity rate has in-direct effects which was mediated by nutrition knowledge. Gender and nutrition knowledge have direct effects and indirect effects which were mediated by dietary attitude. Dietary attitude showed the greatest total causal effect in relation to dietary self-efficacy.

  • This study aims to understand family support and self-efficacy-mediated structural relation of college students' unemployment stress with their adaptation to school life. Findings of the research are summarized as follows. The study looked into how unemployment stress would directly affect self-efficacy, family support and adaptation to school life. It was found that the unemployment stress would have immediate negative effects on the self-efficacy, family support and adaptation to school life. In addition, the study noticed that with both family support and self-efficacy applied as mediating factors, unemployment stress influences college students' adaptation to school life indirectly and negatively. After the investigation on the immediate effects of family support in relation to the self-efficacy, the study indicated that family support has an immediate positive influence on the self-efficacy. In terms of self-efficacy, it appeared to affect adaptation to school life both positively and directly but, its indirect effects on the adaptation to school life was not confirmed. The study failed to find any direct influence of the family support on adaptation to school life but learned that the family support causes an indirect positive effect through self-efficacy, the mediating factor. In conclusion, the study suggests that adaptation to school life improves as long as unemployment stress decreases, while the family support and the self-efficacy are enhanced.

  • Background: The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of self-efficacy promoting pulmonary rehabilitation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods: thirty six patients, with clinically stable COPD were randomly assigned: 18 to a rehabilitation group and another 18 as a control group, The subjects participated in a the self-efficacy promoting pulmonary rehabilitation program for 8 weeks. This program consisted of education, breathing retraining, exercise training, relaxation and counseling. The control group received education only. The outcome variables were self-efficacy, dyspnea, exercise endurance, pulmonary function, and quality of life. Dyspnea was measured using the modified Borg scale. Exercise endurance was measured by the six minute walking distance. The quality of life was measured by the quality of life index for pulmonary disease patients. Results: In the rehabilitation group after performing the self-efficacy promoting pulmonary rehabilitation program, the self-efficacy score, exercise endurance, and quality of life score were higher than the control group (p=0.007, p=0.038, and p=0.039, respectively). and the exertional dyspnea score was significantly lower than controls(p=0.045). However, the dyspnea score and FEV1 were similar after performing the self-efficacy promoting pulmonary rehabilitation program. Conclusion: The self-efficacy promoting pulmonary rehabilitation program is effective to in improve self-efficacy, exertional dyspnea, exercise endurance and quality of life in patients with COPD.

  • This study examines factors influencing family life-satisfaction, focusing specifically on the role of spousal social support, trust of children and self-efficacy. Based on previous studies, two hypotheses were generated. A total of 857 adults (111 fathers and 111 mothers parents of elementary school students and 108 mothers and 108 fathers of high school students) completed a questionnaire consisting of self-efficacy scales (Bandura, 1995) and social support and life-satisfaction scales developed by the present researchers. LISREL analyses fully supported Hypothesis 1 and partially supported Hypothesis 2. First, spousal social support had a direct and positive effect on family life-satisfaction. Second, self-efficacy had a mediating effect between spousal social support and family life-satisfaction. Those respondents who received higher social support from spouse had higher self-efficacy, who in turn had higher family life-satisfaction. Third, trust of children did not have a direct effect on family life-satisfaction. Fourth, trust of children had a direct and positive effect on self-efficacy, which in turn had a direct and positive effect on family life-satisfaction. The results indicated that those respondents who had higher trust of children, had higher self-efficacy, who in turn had higher family life-satisfaction. Self-efficacy plays an important mediating role in increasing Korean adults' family life-satisfaction. This study reveal the importance of indigenous psychology in unraveling the factors influencing family life-satisfaction among Korean adults.

  • The present study tries to identify the characteristics of Problem Based Learning (PBL), which affects the development of middle school students' science self-efficacy. Additionally, we have tried to analyze the relationship within those characteristics to demonstrate the processes of science self-efficacy development. In line with this reasoning, we have developed a 20-module, problem-based learning science program and applied this program to 9th grade students (n=17). Two rounds of qualitative interviews have been conducted with each participant after the program, which has been analyzed with the well-documented method by Corbin and Strauss (2007). As a result, three characteristics of problem based learning have been identified to affect the development of science self-efficacy: a) authentic and ill-structured problem sets, b) small group activity, and c) result sharing. Further analysis has revealed that an authentic and ill-structured problem set as a condition precedent of self-efficacy development, while small group activity has worked as an acceleration condition. Lastly, sharing the result works as a transition condition to future interest on science-related activity or choosing science-related majors.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between emotional intelligence and job performance. Also, the study explore the effects of self-efficacy as a mediating variable and person-supervisor fit as a moderating variable on the mentioned relationships. In order to verify the assumptions related to this research, a survey of 173 sales representatives working in various organizations was conducted. Survey results supported the assumption that higher emotional intelligence resulted in higher job performance. And another assumption that job performance could be predicted more precisely through mediating effect of self-efficacy. Finally, results revealed that the relationships between emotional intelligence and self-efficacy became stronger when the scores of person-supervisor fit were higher. Theoretical and practical implication were reviewed and limitations of the study and suggestions for future research were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the causal relationship between extroversion, cultural self-efficacy, life satisfaction, and stress of participants in culture and arts leisure activities, focusing on persistent social dance participants. The first results showed that extroversion of social dancing participants had a positive effect on cultural self-efficacy. Second, extroversion has a statistically positive effect on life satisfaction. Third, extroversion did not affect stress. Fourth, cultural self-efficacy had a statistically positive effect on life satisfaction. Fifth, cultural self-efficacy had a positive effect on stress. Sixth, life satisfaction had a negative effect on stress. At last, cultural self-efficacy and life satisfaction had negative mediator effect on the relation of extroversion and stress. As a result of this study, it was confirmed that extroversion, cultural self-efficacy, and life satisfaction were significant factors in explaining stress.
