Controllable Haptic Knob for Vehicle Instrument Using MR Fluids (MR 유체를 이용한 제어 가능한 차량용 햅틱 노브)

  • The paper presents control performance of a magnetorheological(MR) fluid-based haptic knob which is applicable to in-vehicle comfort functions. As a first step, MR fluid-based haptic knob is devised to be capable of both rotary and push motions with a single device. Under consideration of spatial limitation, design parameters are optimally determined to minimize a reciprocal of control torque using finite element analysis. The proposed haptic knob is then manufactured and its field-dependent torque is experimentally evaluated. Subsequently, in-vehicle comfort functions are constructed in virtual environment and make them communicate with the haptic knob. Control performances such as reflection force are experimentally evaluated via simple feed-forward control strategy.

Development of Digital Holographic Microscopy System for Measurements of Particle Velocities in MR Fluids (MR 유체 입자 속도 계측을 위한 디지털 홀로그래피 현미경 시스템의 개발)

  • In this study digital holographic microscopy system for measurements of 3-D velocities of particles in MR fluid is developed. Holograms are recorded using either a CCD camera with a double pulse laser or a high-speed camera with a continuous laser. To process recorded holograms, the correlation coefficient method is used for focal plane determination of particles. To remove noise and improve the quality of holograms and reconstructed images, a Wiener filter is adopted. The two-threshold and image segmentation methods are used for binary image transformation. For particle pairing, the match probability method is adopted. The developed system will be applied to measurements of the characteristics of unsteady 3-D particle velocities in MR fluids through the next stage of this study.

Surface polishing of Micro channel using Magneto-Rheological fluid (MR유체를 이용한 미세 채널구조물의 표면연마)

  • Magneto-rheological polishing is a new technology used in precision polishing. It utilizes magneto-rheological fluid. nonmagnetic polishing abrasive, aqueous carrier fluids in magnetic field to remove material from a part surface. Silicon micro channel as work piece is fixed in the slurry which is made of MR fluid and CeO$_2$(10 vol%) abrasive particles. And permanent magnet rotate in the slurry to transfers magnetic force to abrasive particles by increasing yield strength of MR fluid. so, the obtained bottom surface roughness of micro channel by experiment reduced to Ra 0.010 $\mu\textrm{m}$ Rmax 0.103 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and finwall surface roughness of micro channel reduced to Ra 0.018 $\mu\textrm{m}$ Rmax 0.468 $\mu\textrm{m}$. At optimum conditions of variables, the workpiece as silicon micro channel have about 24 times smaller surface roughness than before polishing.

  • 고층 빌딩의 풍하중에 의한 진동을 제어하기 위하여 MR 유체감쇠기를 이용한 반능동 제어 시스템의 설계에 대하여 연구하였다. 제안된 설계기법의 효율성을 검증하기 위하여 ASCE benchmark 구조물을 대상으로 수치 모의 해석을 수행하였다. 유전자 알고리즘을 사용하여 MR 감쇠기의 76층 빌딩 내에서의 최적위치와 용량을 결정하였으며, clipped optimal control 제어기법을 사용하여 가속도 되먹임 구조를 갖는 MR 감쇠기의 제어 알고리즘을 구성하였다, 수치 모의 해석 결과로부터 MR 감쇠기는 ATMD와 유상한 제어 성능을 가지고 있으며 매우 작은 규모의 파워 시스템만으로 운영이 가능한 효율적이고 안정적인 제어 시스템임을 확인할 수 있었다.

Hysteresis Investigation of Magnetorheological Fluid Using Preisach Model (Preisach모델을 이용한 MR 유체의 히스테리시스 특성 고찰)

  • This paper presents a new approach for hysteresis modeling of a magnetorheological (MR) fluid. The field-dependent hysteresis of MR fluid is investigated using the Preisach model. The commercial MR product (MRF-132LD, Lord Corporation) is employed. Its field-dependent shear stress is then obtained using a rheometer (MCR 300, Physica). In order to show the applicability of the Preisach model to the MR fluid, two significant properties; the minor loop property and the wiping-out. property are experimentally examined. Subsequently, the Preisach model for the MR fluid is identified using experimental first order descending (FOD) curves in discrete manner. The effectiveness of the identified hysteresis model is verified in the time domain by comparing the predicted field-dependent shear stress with the measured one. In addition, the hysteresis model proposed in this work is compared to Bingham model.

  • Recently, it has been studying for the polishing process of micro parts widely. However, present MR polishing system, it is difficult to minimize electromagnet and to polish sphere or slope parts. Then, it can not be obtained demanded surface quality. In this study, material removal characteristics of BK7 glass using round endmill type MR polishing system were investigated through series of experiment. The experiments were investigated by changing imposed polishing conditions, such as rotational speed and polishing depth. As a results, very high material removal was obtained at 0.7mm gap distance, 1,980rpm.

  • Recently, it has been studied machining of micro parts with increasing demands for ultra precision parts. However, many engineering problems have already begun in polishing of optical parts or lens. As a method to overcome such problems, a new technology for the polishing of the target surface is being studied by controlling abrasives using MR fluids which are sensitive to magnetic fields. Since the current MR polishing system uses a big electromagnet, and is difficult to polish micro parts or spherical lens. Therefore, in this study, a round endmill type MR polishing system was developed to polish a three-dimensional structure which has spherical or inclined plane. And then, series of experiments were performed to verify the polishing performance of the developed round endmill type MR polishing system.

  • Recently, conventional hydraulic car lift systems face the technological limitations due to a lack of height control. The demand for height controllability is required in many tasks such as wheel alignment, and requires compensation for the structural deformation of the lift caused by irregular load distribution. In order to resolve this limitation of the conventional car lift, in this work, a new type of a hydraulic vehicle lift using a magneto-rheological (MR) valve system is proposed and analyzed. Firstly, the dynamic model of vehicle lift is formulated to evaluate control performance; subsequently, an MR valve is designed to obtain the desired pressure drop required in the car lift. Next, a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is formulated to achieve accurate control of the lifting height and then computer simulations are undertaken to show accurate height control performances of the proposed new car lift system.

  • Tribological properties of a Magneto-Rheological(MR) fluid in a polishing process are studied. For this polishing process, abrasive wear model is proposed as a function of shear force, normal force and actual mean velocity of MR particles at workpiece surface. Experimental conditions are changed by varying the gap distance between workpiece and tool and the rotational speed of tool. From the experimental results, a modified Stribeck curve is obtained, and the friction coefficient turns out to have linear relationship with a modified Sommerfeld number. The validity of the wear model is supported by additional experiments performed for measuring material removal rates.

  • This paper presents dynamic modeling and control analysis of a military vehicle suspension featuring MR valve structure. Firstly, the dynamic model of the suspension system which is included gas spring, MR valve and gas chamber is established with respect to the disturbance. Secondly, the friction model of the suspension system is derived by considering experiment result of the MR suspension system. And then, response characteristics of the damping force with respect to the magnetic field and friction force with the proposed friction model are provided to show the feasibility of practical application. In addition, control performance of the proposed MR suspension system is evaluated with quarter vehicle.
