  • Germination respone to sulfuric acid treatment, temperature, light and underwater condition were experimented for Albizzia julibrissin Durazz. seed. It took 60 minutes to break the dormancy of impermeable seed for the effective sulfuric acid treatment, and temperature sensitivity was decreased by 90 minutes' treatment. The germination rate of the seed was highest, i.e. 96% at 60 minutes acid treatment in a 21。C growth chamber. On the occasion of light sensitivity, the seed was light indifferent. The imbibition rate of seed was higher at 27。C than 21。C and in proportion to the period of acid treatment time. A. julibrissin Durazz. seed were well germinated at underwagter condition.

  • 'JaGuiNaMu' is one of the Korean crude drugs used mainly to cure neuralgia, bone fracture, jaundice, and headache. With regard to the botanical origin of 'JaGuiNaMu', it has been considered to be Albizzia species of Leguminosae, but there was no pharmacognostical confirmation on it. To clarify the botanical origin of 'JaGuiNaMu', the anatomical characteristics of the branch of Albizzia species growing wild in Korea, A. julibrissin and A. coreana were studied. As a result, it was clarified that 'JaGuiNaMu' was the branch of Albizzia julibrissin.

  • From the legumes of Albizzia julibrissin Durazzini (Leguminosae), a mixture of long-chain alcohols, ${\alpha}-spinasterol$, a mixture of acylated sterol glycosides and ${\alpha}-spinasteryl$ $3-O-{\beta}-D-glucoside$ were isolated. Two mixtures of long-chain alcohols and acylated sterol glycosides were characterized as 1-hexacosanol (major) and 1-tetracosanol, and $3-O-[6'-O-palmitoyl-{\beta}-D-glucosyl]-{\alpha}-spinasterol$ (major) and its 6'-O-stearoyl ester. All compounds were identified on the basis of spectral data and chemical reactions.

  • Assay-guided fractionation of the methanol extract of the leaves of Albizzia julibrissin has furnished quercitrin (1) and afzelin (2) as the scavengers of DPPH radical. Quercitrin and afzelin showed scavenging activity of DPPH free radical with the $IC_{50}$ values of 17.3 and 71.5 ${\mu}M$, respectively.

  • Repeated column chromatography of an ethyl acetate extract of the root bark of Albizzia julibrissin Durazz afforded four compounds, euscaphic acid ester glucoside (1), luteolin-7 -O-neohesperidoside (2), (+)-medioresinol (3), (-)-syringaresinol (4). Their structures were determined by chemical and spectroscopic methods. Compounds 1-4 were isolated from this plant for the first time. Among these compounds, (+)-medioresinol (3) exhibited moderate cytotoxic activity against XF 498 and HCT 15 cell line.

  • According to the distance from the industrial complex, 5 sample plots were selected to study the changes of vegetational composition of the forest community caused by air pollution in Ulsan. Then 5 subplots were set within a plot. We considered that this gradient analysis by distance could be coincided with the gradual transition of plant succession. Number of species, number of individuals, species diversity, evenness increased and similarity index decreased with increasing distance from the industrial complex. Robinia pseudoacacia, Smilax china appeared to be tolerant to air pollution whereas Quercus variabilis, Q-aliena, Q. dentata and Albizzia julibrissin to be sensitive.

  • To check the possibility of using natural extracts for cosmetic substances, we tested the bioactive effects of 11 crude extracts originating from native plants grown in the Republic of Korea on anti-oxidant and anti-wrinkle activities. When DPPH scavenging activities were measured, the crude extracts of Vitex rotundifolia, Scirpus triangulatus, S. wichurae, S. tabernaemontani, and Aeschynomene indica assays had more than 70% of DPPH scavenging activities at 100 μg/ml concentration. The data from the hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay revealed that the crude extracts from the 10 species, except for Eleocharis mamillata var. cyclocarpa, could scavenge more than 90% at 1,000 μg/ml concentration. The crude extract of V. rotundifolia had the highest xanthine oxidase scavenging activity at a 1,000 μg/ml concentration. Based on the four anti-oxidant assays, the crude extracts of V. rotundifolia, S. triangulatus, S. wichurae, S. tabernaemontani, and A. indica were shown to have excellent anti-oxidant capacities overall. In addition to the anti-oxidant capacities, the crude extract from S. wichurae exhibited high collagenase inhibitory activity, therefore, it could be a promising candidate for a cosmetic ingredient with anti-oxidant and anti-wrinkle qualities. The results of this study indicate that many wild plants native to the Korea Peninsula can be used as excellent natural substances for cosmetics based on their bioactive effects.

  • The present study was undertaken to evaluate the anti-hyperlipidemic activity of Albizzia julibrissin and Cassia tora L. extract mixtures in high fat diet-induced hyperlipidemic rats. In high-fat diet fed hyperlipidemic rats, oral treatment with Albizzia julibrissin and Cassia tora L. extracts resulted in decreased levels of total serum cholesterol and triglycerides, epididymal fat pad (EFP) weights, and activities of hepatic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and malic enzyme, while the levels of feces production and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol were increased, compared with untreated control. Therefore, these results suggest that Albizzia julibrissin and Cassia tora L. extract mixtures can ameliorate hyperlipidemia.
