  • The purpose of this study is to explore university entrance system with particular regard to the interview system of some leading universities. In order to accomplish this end, I sketched university entrance system as a whole, applying procedures and entrance requirements, selecting criteria, and explore interview systems of leading universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, UCL and Imperial College. The university entrance system in the UK is closely related to the educational achievements at secondary schools and sixth form colleges. Admissions tutors look at applicant's academic ability and potential through various entrance requirements. Leading universities such as Oxbridge stress performance at interview with excellent examination grades, due to competition for places is strong. Admissions tutors are looking for the students who are best suited to the unique university education in general and the course applied for. The university entrance system in the UK would be shed light on Korea university entrance system in terms of basic principles and interviews as a whole and of addressing the academic ability and potential to flourish at the university.

  • Korean universities have selected candidates through admission officer system since 2009. However, the universities now have to settle several problems that they faced at the first stage of the system. Therefore, this research, taking the admission screening data of J University as examples, aims to discuss how differently the weight of the screening factors appears depending on the subjects related to college entrance, such as parents, teachers, and admission officers. The research indicates that the subjects have different perspectives about entrance screening requisites. Parents and teachers more value the student record that is a countable indicator than the letter of self-recommendation that is a uncountable indicator. However, it also indicates that admission officers take attitude against parents and teachers.

  • The goal of the entrance examination models is to promote promising and potential students who are suitable for post-secondary education purposes. Recently, a promotion system based on the admissions supervisors has been the major role for the promotion of students. Various statistical models and methods should be applied for the better and reasonable promotion of promising Korean and international students. In this study, we applied the proper methods in statistical methodologies and show the meaningful results on the performance evaluation of the several entrance examination models for a university in Seoul, Korea.

The survey results of teachers' perceptions are the following. First, for 'potential' criteria, teachers consider challenging spirit and students' initiatives are important evaluation criteria. For 'personality' criteria, they contemplate that responsibility, community spirit and flexibility to resolve conflicts are important values. Further, views of life and creativity also need to be seriously considered in the screening process. Second, their satisfaction with the college admission officer system was relatively high (9.34 points). Last, in order to improve the interview screening system, teachers assert that the process to secure fairness is required. Based on the results, suggestions were made for ensuring expertise of college admission officer and improving the alternative policy of the admission officer interview system.

  • This study examined the process of admission selection of vocational high schools and meister high schools and how the process have been utilized by schools to select appropriate students and by students to make decisions for application in consideration of their interests, aptitudes, and career paths. To address the purpose of this study, Focus Group Interviews(FGI) were conducted with three groups of participants: vocational high schools and meister high schools teachers, high school freshmen' parents, and middle school teachers who had many students advanced to vocational and meister high schools. The findings indicated that during the promotion process, schools made efforts to attract students with higher GAP and provided information mainly regarding employment rate instead of curriculum or program of majors. Since schools usually visited middle schools where higher GPA students were, not all students had balanced opportunities of high school promotions and enough information about majors. For the application process, the schools placed a high value on scholastic performance while students applied high schools considering their interests, aptitudes, and career paths. In terms of admission type and criteria, the high school teachers reported no big differences between special admission and general admission while students took advantage from the special admission process which was less competitive than general admission. Based on the findings, a number of suggestions were made in order to improve the process of admission selection of vocational high schools and meister high schools.
