  • In this research a suspended solid transport experiment was conducted in the river experiment center to find the characteristics and dispersion of the material. Modeling by the particle dispersion model was also executed to reproduce the suspended solid transport. The suspended solid was consisted of a mixture of silica and water using a mixing equipment, which was then introduced into a real-scale flume and measured with the laser-diffraction based particle size analyzer(LISST) to find the concentration of the material. The comparison between the measured suspended solid concentration using drone images and particle size analyzers, with the model showed a good match overall, which proved the applicability of the model. Along with finding the model applicability, the research showed the potential for suspended solid estimation in high flow situations with high rainfall.

  • Monthly measurements made at 15 stations along the axis of the upper Neuse River estuary show a highly variable degree of correlation between concentration of suspended particulate material (SPM) and attenuation coefficient (c) of light as measured by transmissometer. Coefficients of determination along transect lines ranged from $0.12{\sim}0.93$ and calibration slopes ranged from $0.50{\sim}5.63$. When examined on a station-by-station basis, coefficients of determination ranged from $0.21{\sim}0.96$ and calibration slopes ranged from $1.04{\sim}4.94$. Surface calibrations made at individual stations over the full 13-month period were the most consistent of all observations and were considerably better than calibrations made using all of the stations on a given day. Organic content, which can dominate the suspended sediment load during some months, does not appear to explain the variations in reliability of the calibrations. However, an abundance of large aggregates with time-varying size and shape distributions may be partly responsible for variations in optical properties of the sediments, and thus may confound the relationship between SPM and c in the Neuse River estuary Time-varying calibrations to account for non-negligible changes in optical properties may not suffice in complex estuarine environments where the in situ particle dynamics are poorly understood. However, the best use of Beam Transmissometer will continue to be for applications such as detecting water-column events or for use in situations where wide error bars in establishing SPM concentrations are acceptable.

  • Light-scattering fine particulate matter monitors can measure particulate matter (PM) concentrations in every second and can be designed in a portable size. They can measure the concentrations of various PM sizes (PM1.0, PM2.5, PM4.0 and PM10) with a single sensor. They measure the number and size of particulate matters and convert them to weight per volume (concentration). These devices show a large error for asian dust. This paper proposes a scheme that compensates the PM2.5 concenstration error for asian dust by multiple linear regression machine learning in light-scattering PM monitors. This scheme can be effective with only two or three types of PM sizes. The experimental results compare a beta-ray PM monitor of national institute of environmental research and a light-scattering PM monitor during a month. The correlation coefficient (R2) of theses two devices was 0.927 without asian dust, but it was 0.763 due to asian dust during the entire experimental period and improved to 0.944 by the proposed machine learning.

  • The synthesis of highly concentrated silver nano sol assisted by polymeric dispersant (polyelectrolytes) for inkjet method was studied. The silver nano sol was prepared with AgNO$_3$, polyelectrolytes (HS5468cf ; polyacrylic ammonium salt), and reducing agent. The polyelectrolytes play an important role in formation of complex composed of Ag$\^$+/ion and carboxyl group (COO$\^$-/), result in preparation of highly dispersed silver nano particles. The optimization of added amount of polyelectrolytes, and concentration of silver nano sol was studied. The silver nanoparticles were evaluated by XRD, particle size/zeta potential analyzer and FE-TEM. The silver nanoparticles with the range of 10 nm in diameter were produced. The concentration of batch-synthesized silver nano sol was possible up to 40 wt%.

  • To measure the traffic pollutants with high temporal and spatial resolution under real conditions a mobile emission laboratory (MEL) was designed and built in KIST with close-cooperation with KIMM and Yonsei university. The equipment of the mini-van provides gas phase measurements of CO, NOx, $CO_2$, THC (Total hydrocarbon) and number density & size distribution measurements of fine and ultra-fine particles by a fast mobility particle sizer (FMPS) and a condensation particle counter (CPC). The inlet sampling port above the bumper enables the chasing of different type of vehicles. This paper introduces the construction and technical details of the MEL and presents data from the car chasing experiment of diesel and CNG city bus. The dilution ratio was increased rapidly according to the chasing distance. Most particles from the diesel city bus were counted under 300 nm and the peak concentration of the particles was located between 40-60 nm. However, the most particles from the CNG city bus were nano particle counted under 50 nm.

  • Nanoparticles are used in various fields such as chemistry, medicine, the environment, and information and communication. With the increasing use of engineered nanomaterials, exposure to nanoparticles is expected to increase in the workplace and the environmental media. However, while nanotechnology industries are expanding, research on the exposure assessment of nanomaterials to humans and the environment is only at a beginning stage. Especially, if nanoparticles with a size of 100 nm or less that are contained in nano-products are released unintentionally, they may pose potential risks to the human body through breathing or skin exposure. Therefore, in this work, the possibility of potential exposure of nanoparticles moving from the laboratory to the office was confirmed, and nanoparticle safety guidelines are proposed. A nano-collector was used to detect nanoparticles in the atmosphere, and through use of a scanning mobility particle sizer it was found that nanoparticle concentrations in the laboratory and the office tended to be similar. On the assumption that nanoparticles attached to a lab-coat move out of the laboratory, a lab-coat to which nanocarbon black was attached was shaken and the concentration of the remaining particles on the lab-coat determined. The results confirmed that sufficient amounts of nanoparticles attached to the lab-coat could move from the laboratory to the office along the path of a researcher; thus, safety guidelines for the handling of lab-coat nanoparticles are required.

  • The particle formation using pyrolysis has many advantages over other particle manufacturing techniques. The particles by pyrolysis have relatively uniform size and chemical composition. Also, we can easily produce high purity particles. Thus, we studied the formation of silicon particles by pyrolysis of 50% $SiH_4$ gas diluted in Ar gas. A pyrolysis furnace was used for the thermal decomposition of $SiH_4$ gas at $800^{\circ}C$ and atmospheric pressure. The aerosol flow from furnace is separated into two ways. The one is to the Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) for particle size distribution measurement and the other is to the particle deposition system. The produced silicon particles are deposited on the wafer in the deposition chamber. SEM measurement was used to compare the particle size distribution results from the SMPS. Depending on the experimental conditions, particles of high concentration in the $30\sim80$ nm size range were generated.

  • Each river confluence has the inherent hydraulic and mixing characteristics coming from its bathymetry and topography. It is necessary to make the measurement covering the spatial extent of studying area in order to catch these 2-dimensional intrinsic characteristics. This study focuses to investigate the hydraulic and mixing characteristics at the confluence of Nakdong and Geumho River, from field measurement of flow, water quality, and suspended particle distribution with ADCP (Riversurveyor M9), multi-parameter water quality sonde (YSI6600V2), and submersible system for in-situ observations of particle size distribution and volume concentration (LISST : Laser In-Situ Scattering & Transmissometry), respectively. From the results, it can be found that the field measurement of suspended particle and water quality distribution can be the useful approach to catch the hydraulic and mixing characteristics at a river confluence.
