  • The heat transfer mechanism for radiation is directly related to the emission of photons and electromagnetic waves. Depending on the participation of the medium, the radiation can be classified into two forms: surface and gas radiation. In the present study, unknown radiation properties were estimated using an inverse boundary analysis of surface radiation in an axisymmetric cylindrical enclosure. For efficiency, a repulsive particle swarm optimization (RPSO) algorithm, which is a relatively recent heuristic search method, was used as inverse solver. By comparing the convergence rates and accuracies with the results of a genetic algorithm (GA), the performances of the proposed RPSO algorithm as an inverse solver was verified when applied to the inverse analysis of the surface radiation problem.

  • Gas-particle two phase flow and heat transfer in a cavity receiving thermal radiation through selectively transparent walls have been analyzed by a finite difference method. Particles injected from the upper hole of the cavity are accelerated downward by gravity and exit through the lower hole while they absorb, emit and scatter the incident thermal radiation. Gas phase is heated through convection heat transfer from particles, and consequently buoyancy induced flow field is formed. Two-equation model with two-way coupling is adopted and interaction terms are treated as sources by PSI-Cell method. For the particulate phase, Lagrangian method is employed to describe velocities and temperatures of particles. As thermal radiation is incident upon horizontally, radiative heat transfer in the vertical direction is assumed negligible and two-flux model is used for the solution of radiative heat flus. Gas phase velocity and temperature distributions, and particle trajectories, velocities and temperatures are presented. The effects of particle inlet condition, particle size, injection velocity and particle mass rate are mainly investigated.

  • A direct contact heat exchanger using particle-suspended gas as a heat transfer medium is analyzed with an extended emphasis on the radiation, i. e., considering the radiation by both gas and particles. While the Runge-Kutta method is used for a numerical analysis of the momentum and energy equations, the finite volume method is utilized to solve the radiative transfer equation. Present study shows a notable effect by the gas radiation in addition to the particle radiation, especially when changing the chamber length as well as the gas and particle mass flow rate. When the gas and particle mass flow rate is raised, the gas temperature in the particle heater still increases as the gas absorption coefficient increases, which is different from the results for the small scale heat exchanger.

  • A study of thermophoretic particle deposition has been carried out for a particle laden stagnation flow considering the effect of radiative heat transfer. Energy, concentration and radiative transfer equations are all coupled and have been solved iteratively assuming that absorption and scattering coefficients were proportional to the local concentration of particles. Radiative heat transfer was shown to strongly affect the profiles of temperature and particle concentration. e. g., radiation increases the thickness of thermal boundary layer and wall temperature gradients significantly. As the wall temperature gradients increase, the particle concentration at the wall decreases due to thermophoretic particle transport. The deposition rate that is thermophoretic velocity times particle concentration at the wall decreases as the effects of radiation increases. The effects of optical thickness, conduction to radiation parameter and wall emissivity have been determined. The effects of anisotropic scattering are shown as insignificant.

  • Space environment has various hazard effects on satellite. These effects can not be experienced in earth ambient condition. In terrestrial space, plasma or atomic oxygen could erode satellite surface. Also ultra violet or particle radiation may damage surface materials or electronic parts which constitute satellite. So, in designing satellite, the natural environment of operational orbit should be investigated and appropriate mitigation should be prepared.

  • The finite volume method for radiation is applied for the analysis of radiative base heating by SE and PE of the aircraft exhaust plume. The exhaust plume is considered as an absorbing, emitting, and scattering medium, while the base plane is assumed to be cold and black. The radiative properties of non-gray gases are obtained through the WSGGM, and the particle is modelled as spheres. The present method is validated by comparing the results with those of the backward Monte-Carlo method and then the radiative base heating characteristics are analyzed by changing such various parameters as particle concentration, temperature, and scattering phase function. The results show that the radiative heat flux coming into the base plane decreases with altitude and distance, but it increases as the particle temperature increases. The forward scattering of particles increases PE while it decreases SE.

  • An inverse radiation analysis is presented for the estimation of the radiation properties for an absorbing, emitting, and scattering media with diffusely emitting and reflecting opaque boundaries. In this study, a repulsive particle swarm optimization(RPSO) algorithm which is a relatively recent heuristic search method is proposed as an effective method for improving the search efficiency for unknown parameters. To verify the performance of the proposed RPSO algorithm, it is compared with a basic particle swarm optimization(PSO) algorithm and a hybrid genetic algorithm(HGA) for the inverse radiation problem with estimating the various radiation properties in a two-dimensional irregular medium when the measured temperatures are given at only four data positions. A finite-volume method is applied to solve the radiative transfer equation of a direct problem to obtain measured temperatures.

  • In the present study, numerical predictions of infrared spectrum of rocket plume with considering effect of particles based on approximation theories were performed by using a line-by-line radiation model with radiation databases. The high-resolution radiation databases were used to predict thermal emission spectra of gas molecules within the rocket plume regime. The particles were modeled as soot particles by using 1st term approximation of Mie theory and Rayleigh approximation. The reliability of modeled effect of soot particles using the two approximation theories was verified, and the spectral radiance of rocket plume was predicted based on the verification. The results were improved in the short wavelength range by considering the effect of soot particles.

  • When a small absorbing particle is exposed to a strong thermal radiation incidence, it moves towards or away from the radiation source due to the nonuniform internal absorption of the radiation. It is called the photophoretic phenomena and governed by the asymmetry factor. An asymmetry factor for the total wavelength range is calculated to estimate the photophoretic phenomena of a particle in a combustor or in the atmosphere and compared to that for a single wavelength. The samples are soot particulates, water droplets, ice particles, silicon particles, $SiO_2$ particles, aluminium oxide particles, whose spectral complex refractive index are available. Although differences between total and monochromatic asymmertry factors are not much for relatively uniform distribution of the spectral refractive index, they are great in general. Therefore the use of the monochromatic factor will considerably deteriorate the accuracy of the calculation of the photophoresis.
