A Study on the Convergence of Sleep Patterns and Sleep Disturbance Factors of Inpatients Children Recognized by Care Providers (돌봄 제공자가 인식하는 입원아동의 수면양상 및 수면방해 요인에 대한 융합연구)

  • This was a basic study to ascertain the changes in sleep patterns and the factors disrupting sleep in hospitalized children. The participants were children aged 6 years or younger who had been hospitalized in an advanced general hospital in a particular region. A total of 81 participants were included, and for data analysis using SPSS/WIN 21.0. The results showed that children's sleep duration decreased significantly after hospitalization compared to before (p<.001), and there were significant differences in sleep onset latency (p<.001) and frequency of sleep deprivation (p<.001). Factors perceived by the children's mothers to disrupt sleep included the child's health state, noise in the ward, nurses' treatments, and lighting in the ward. This study verified that children's sleep quality and duration decreases during hospitalization, demonstrating the need to prepare measures to improve sleep in hospitalized children based on an understanding of changes in sleep patterns and disrupting factors.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate conception of children's hospitalization stress and to make clear concepts, and to use Walker & Avant's concept analysis method. Children's hospitalization stress attributes were derived from physiological changes, individual-environmental interactions, cognitive and psychosocial developmental stage responses, and intrinsic and outward changes due to coping styles. The prerequisites for hospitalization stress of children were disease severity, biological factors, and support system, and the results were hospitalization adaptation, disease and health recovery, improvement of child development, and acquisition of coping skills. In order to solve the prerequisites for Hospitalization stress of children, it is necessary to be aware of the disease and to establish a support system of parent-family. Afterwards, we suggest more qualitative research on the hospitalization stress of children, the development of tools that reflect the characteristics of the hospitalization stress of children, and the development of programs to solve the Hospitalization stress.

The influence of health information source credibility and e health literacy on health information orientation of parents of local hospitalized children (일부도시 입원 아동 부모의 건강정보원에 대한 신뢰도와 전자 건강문해력이 건강정보지향에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of credibility of health information (CHI) source and e health literacy (eHL) on health information orientation (HIO) of parents of hospitalized children. Convenience sampling method of 109 parent whose children were admitted in a children's hospital in D city was used. The hierarchial regression model with general characteristics and characteristics of children for step 1 and eHL and CHI for step 2 against HIO was statistically significant (F=8.22, p<.001). And this model could explain 40% of HIO ($R^2$=.40). Especially, eHL (${\beta}$=.54, p<.001) and CHI (${\beta}$=.21, p=.008), subjective health perception (${\beta}$=.19, p=.016), and age (${\beta}$=-0.15, p=.048) were identified the influencing factors on HIO. Based on these findings, to foster the HIO of parents of inpatient children, credible health information should be given to these population and a approach with eHL enhancement should be considered. And further research that is to explore the way to enhance the eHL should be carried out to suggest the practical application

Parent Participation in care of Hospitalized Children: Concept Analysis (입원 환아 간호에 대한 부모의 참여 개념분석)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this paper was to explore the meaning of parent participation (PP), to clarify the concept of PP as a benefit to children and their families, and to increase understanding of PP in pediatric nursing practice. Methods: Walker and Avant's approach to concept analysis was used. A search of multidisciplinary literature published between 1994 and 2012 was undertaken using the keyword, 'parent participation' combined with hospitalized children. Attributes, antecedents and consequences were inductively derived from the citations analyzed (n=30). Results: PP was identified as having three attributes: Negotiation, Performing caring activity, Providing individualized care. Antecedents of PP were 'Parents & pediatric nurses' attitudes', 'Children's age', 'Children's conditions'. Consequences of PP were 'Effective partnership', 'Mutual empowerment'. Conclusion: Parent participation as defined by the results of this study should contribute a foundation for theory development in pediatric nursing practice.

  • This paper reports on the development of the Children's Separtion Rating Scale(CSRS), its initial reliability and validity, and clinical/research utility with psychiatrically hospitalized children. The CSRS appears to be a reliable and valid instrument, and useful in distinguishing children's separation reaction from their general psychopathology. It may be also useful in aiding clinicians in differential diagnosis. This study points to the need for further understanding of children's psychiatric hospitalization in relation to their separation reaction and its possible untoward effects. Findings of this pilot study support the notion that inpatient treatment programs should address the developmental needs and abilities of the various age groups and the particular deficits reflected in their psychopathology.

A Study of Humor as a Nursing Intervention for Hospitalized Children (입원아동을 위한 아동간호학 분야의 유머 중재에 관한 고찰)

  • Purpose: Humor is an important part of life. Humor has many benefits as an intervention for hospitalized children. Humor is one strategy that pediatric nurses can use to help children cope with illness and hospitalizations. The purposes of the study were to 1) review the definition of humor, 2) identify methods and skills in using humor as an intervention, 3) identify the effects of humor as an intervention, and 4) suggest further research. Method: The design was a descriptive study with literature review. Previous studies were identified by searches of MEDLINE, CHNIAL, PUBMED and ProQuest. Results: Humor has positive physiological, psychological, social and communicative effects on patients and humor has a positive effect on the immune system. Conclusion: The main point identified from this study suggests that humor as a nursing intervention be developed for nurses to use with children who are hospitalized. Further research is needed to develop programs for humor as an intervention for health promotion and disease prevention in children.

Comparison of the Quality of Nursing Care as Perceived by Pediatric Nurses and Mothers of Hospitalized Children (아동병동 간호사와 입원아동 어머니가 인식한 간호의 질 비교)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to compare the quality of nursing care as perceived by registered nurses and mothers of hospitalized children in South Korea. Methods: This was a descriptive study that recruited 70 mothers of hospitalized children and 70 nurses in pediatric units in university hospitals as participants. The quality of pediatric nursing care was measured using importance and performance scores for 19 items describing various elements of nursing care. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the independent t-test. Results: The hospitalized children mothers'mean importance scores were significantly higher than those of the nurses (t=2.94, p=.004). However, there were no significant differences in the mean performance scores of nurses and mothers (t=0.91, p=.363) or between nurses'and mothers'perceptions of quality of nursing care, with the exception of a significant difference for the quality of explanations (t=2.78, p=.006). The quality of explanations was assessed more positively by nurses than by mothers. Conclusion: This study suggests that when developing strategies to improve the quality of nursing care in pediatric wards, ensuring that pediatric nurses provide detailed explanations should be considered as a way to improve the quality of nursing care in pediatric units.

A Study on Health/Illness Concepts in Hospitalized Children (입원아동이 지각한 건강과 질병개념에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the health and illness concepts of hospitalized children. The subjects were 129 hospitalized children from 3 to 12 years old in one general hospital. Data were collected through semistructured interviews by authors. This study was conducted from Jun. 1, 2000 to Dec. 31, 2000. Data were coded and categorized by content analysis. The results were as follows : 1. Perceived health concept were physical well-being, food, exercise, powerfulness, emotional stability, obeidence, cleanliness, sleep and ability of social adaptation. 2. Perceived health behavior to maintain health were food, treatment, exercise, cleanliness, obeidence, sleep, emotional stability, power-fulness and psychological stability, physical well-being. 3. Perceived prevention of illness were food, cleanliness, treatment, exercise, obedience, sleep, powerfulness, psychological stability, emotional stability, recreation and ability of social adaptation. 4. Perceived causes of illness were illness, trauma and food. 5. Perceived treatment of illness were treatment, sleep, rest, food, obedience, emotional stability, psychological stability, cleanliness, exercise and powerfulness.

Factors Affecting Nursing Students' Perception on Pediatric Patient Safety Culture and Nursing Activity (간호대학생의 입원아동 안전간호활동 인식 영향 요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that affect nursing students' perception of pediatric safety nursing activities for children during hospitalization. Methods: The study sample included 304 nursing students who had participated in pediatric nursing practice. Data were analyzed using SAS 9.3 program. Results: Regression analysis showed that the model's explanatory power was 37%. Safety policy and procedure, safety priority, disaster experience, and knowing a place of refuge were factors affecting the perception of safety nursing activities for children during hospitalization. Conclusion: Findings show that safety policy and procedures and safety priority are major factors that affect the perception of safety nursing activities and indicate that effective education programs on safety policy and procedure and safety priority are necessary to improve the perception of safety nursing activities.
