This study assessed the removal efficiency of NOM which is known as the precursors of DBPs in advanced water treatment using the ceramic membrane filtration, introduced the first in the nation at the Y water treatment plant (WTP). It is generally well-known that the removal of NOM by MF Membrane is very low in water treatment process. But, the result of investigation on removal efficiency of NOM in advanced water treatment using the ceramic membrane was different as follows. The removal rate of organic contaminant by the ceramic membrane advanced water treatment was determined to be 65.5% for the DOC, 85.8% for UV254, and 77 to 86% for DBPFP. The removal rate of pre-ozonation was found to be 6 to 15% more effective compared with the pre-chlorination. The removal rate of DOC and $UV_{254}$ in biological activated carbon(BAC) process was over 50% and 75%, respectively although the rate was decreased 10 ~ 20% according to analysis items in converting from GAC to BAC.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of Fe and Mn oxides coated granular activated carbons (FMOCGs) for the removal of arsenite and arsenate by oxidation and adsorption mechanisms using surface characterization and batch adsorption experiments. Within four manufactured adsorbents, Fe and Mn contents of FMOCG-1 was the highest (178.12 mg Fe/g and 11.25 mg Mn/g). In kinetic results, As(III) was removed by oxidation and adsorption with FMOCGs. Removal of arsenic by FMOCGs increased as pH value of the solution decreased. The adsorption isotherm results were well fitted with Langmuir isotherm. Adsorption amount of As(V) onto FMOCGs was higher than that of As(III) and the maximum adsorption capacities of FMOCGs for As(III) and As(V) were 1.38~8.44 mg/g and 2.91~9.63 mg/g, respectively.

The adsorption characteristics of tricyclazole by granular activated carbon were experimently investigated in the batch adsorption. Kinetic studies of adsorption of tricyclazole were carried out at 298, 308 and 318 K, using aqueous solutions with 250, 500 and 1,000 mg/L initial concentration of tricyclazole. It was established that the adsorption equilibrium of tricyclazole on granular activated carbon was successfully fitted by Freundlich isotherm equation at 298 K. The pseudo first order and pseudo second order models were used to evaluate the kinetic data and the pseudo second order kinetic model was the best with good correlation. Values of the rate constant ($k_2$) have been calculated as 0.1076, 0.0531, and 0.0309 g/mg h at 250, 500 and 1,000 mg/L initial concentration of tricyclazole, respectively. Thermodynamic parameter such as activation energy, standard enthalpy, standard entropy and standard free energy were evaluated. The positive value for enthalpy, -66.43 kJ/mol indicated that adsorption interaction of tricyclazole on activated carbon was an exothermic process. The estimated values for standard free energy were -5.08~-8.10 kJ/mol over activated carbon at 200 mg/L, indicated toward a exothermic process.

Granular Activated Carbon(GAC) is widely used in drinking water treatment. At S and B Water Treatment Plant, GAC is used in place of granular media in conventional rapid filters(GAC Filter-Adsorber) for removal of Disinfection By-products(DBPs). The primary focus of this study is on the performance of existing filter-adsorber, and their operation. It was found that F/A process removed turbidity as effective as sand system. The ratio of Hydrophobic DOM (HPO) and hydrophilic DOM (HPI) fraction in the raw water at S and B WTP was similar. Filter Adsorber presented earlier DOC breakthrough and steady state condition which was contributed by biodegradation during operation period. The removal efficiency of DBPs were used to evaluate the filter performance. The DBPs concentration of F/A treated water was below treatment goal level (THM < $80\;{\mu}g/L$, HAA < $60{\mu}g/L$). The removal efficiency of THM decreased rapidly during operation period. However, HAA were removed steadily regardless of the influent concentration of HAA. These results indicate that the removal of THM depend upon the adsorption mechanism while the removal of HAA depend upon biodegradation as well as adsorption. The decrease of adsorption capacity and characteristic value of GAC may be attributed to the effect of high organic loading, residual free chlorine, coagulants, manganese oxidants and frequently backwashing. This study has confirmed that Filter adsorber process can be considered as effective alternatives for the removal of DBPs, especially HAA.
Batch adsorption studies including equilibrium, kinetics and thermodynamic parameters for the adsorption of new fuchsin dye using granular activated carbon were investigated with varying the operating variables such as initial concentration, contact time and temperature. Equilibrium adsorption data were fitted into Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich and Temkin isotherms. Adsorption equilibrium was mostly well described by Langmuir Isotherm. From the estimated separation factor of Langmuir ($R_L$ = 0.023), and Freundlich (1/n = 0.198), this process could be employed as an effective treatment for the adsorption of new fuchsin dye. Also based on the adsorption energy (E = 0.002 kJ/mol) from Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm and the adsorption heat constant (B = 1.920 J/mol) from Temkin isotherm, this adsorption is physical adsorption. From kinetic experiments, the adsorption reaction processes were confirmed following the pseudo second order model with good correlation. The intraparticle diffusion was a rate controlling step. Thermodynamic parameters including changes of free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were also calculated to predict the nature of adsorption. The change of enthalpy (92.49 kJ/mol) and activation energy (11.79 kJ/mol) indicated the endothermic nature of adsorption processes. The change of entropy (313.7 J/mol K) showed an increasing disorder in the adsorption process. The change of free energy found that the spontaneity of process increased with increasing the adsorption temperature.
There is no certain definition about advanced drinking water treatment but it is generally known as activated carbon process, membrane process or ozone process which can remove non-conventional pollutants such as taste and odor compounds, and micro-pollutants. There are more than 20 processes related to activated carbon as adsorber or biological activated carbon in Korea. The saturated carbon by pollutants can be reused by reactivation. However, the effect of reactivation on activated carbon is not well-understood in terms of changing physical properties of carbon to adsorption capacity of natural organic matter (NOM). In this study, the effects of reactivation on physical properties of activated carbon were investigated by isotherm and breakthrough of NOM. Ash content was increased from 8% to 13.3%. Iodine number is commonly used as an indicator for performance of reactivation. The iodine number was decreased about 20% after reactivating twice. The degree of reactivation can be evaluated by not only iodine number but also apparent density.

Sponataneous ignition characteristics for granulated activated carbon were observed by performing experiments at constant ambient temperature and varying the ambient temperature sinusoidally. In case of varying the ambient temperature sinusoidally, the amplitudes of temperature were 5$^{\circ}C$, 1$0^{\circ}C$ and 15$^{\circ}C$ respectively, and the period in each amplitude was varied at an interval of 30minutes from zero to 3hours. As the results of experiments at a constant ambient temperature, the critical spontaneous ignition temperature of the sample decreased as the sample vessel size increased. Apparent activation energy of the sample calculated from the Frank-Kamenetskii's thermal Ignition theory was 38.82[kca1/mo1] In case of varying the ambient temperature sinusoidally, the critical spontaneous ignition tempera-ture was lower than that at the constant ambient temperature, and the minimum critical spontaneous ignition temperature decreased with the amplitude of heating sinusoidal curve. At the same amplitude, the critical spontaneous ignition temperature decreased until it reached the minimum point and then in-creased as the period increased.
Aqueous phase adsorption of phenols by granular activated carbon was studied in a batch adsorption vessel. Adsorption Isotherms of phenol(Ph), p-chlorophenol(PCP) and p-nitrophenol (PNP) from aqueous solution on granular activated carbon have been obtained. The experimental data were analyzed by the surface and pore diffusion models. Both models could be applied to predict the adsorption phenomena. However, the pore diffusion model was slightly better than the surface diffusion model In representing the experimental data for the initial concentration changes. Therefore, the pore diffusion model was used to predict the change of operating variables such as the agitation speed and Particle size of adsorbent which have influence on the film resistance and intraparticle diffusion.
The adsorption experiment of phenol(Ph) from aqueous solution on granular activated carbon was studied in order to design the fixed-bed adsorption column. The experimental data were analyzed by unsteady-state, one-dimensional heterogeneous model. Finite element method(FEM) was applied to analyze the sensitivity of parameter and to predict the fixed-bed adsorption column performance on operation variable changes. The prediction model showed similar effect to mass transfer and intraparticle diffusion coefficient changes suggesting that both parameter present mass transfer rate limits for GAC-phenol system. The Freundlich constants had a greater effect than kinetic parameters for the performance of fixed-bed adsorption column. FEM solution facilitated prediction of concentration history in solution and within adsorbent particle.
