  • In this paper, the method calculating hydroelastic responses of very large floating structure close to a breakwater in waves is presented. The source-dipole distribution method is used to calculate the generalized radiation problem considering breakwater effects and the diffraction problem is analyzed by using the source-dipole distribution andvelocity potential continuation method. The response of a VLFS is approximated by anexpansion in terms of a free-free beam. Calculated model is a VLFS with 1000m in length in a sea with a straight breakwater. The vertical displacements and bonding moments around a VLFS are calculated by variations for distance between a VLFS and a breakwater and incident wave angle to know the effect of a breakwater.

  • The frequency dependency of the Rayleigh surface wave was investigated indirectly by measuring the angular dependency of the backward radiation of the incident ultrasonic wave in the abrasion specimens, which was explained in view of the residual stress distribution. The peak intensity of the backward radiation profile decreased and the right half width of the profile increased with an increase of the variational rate of residual stress for the scuffing specimen. The peak intensity was also affected by the surface wave scattering during the propagation around the micro-damages. The peak angle might depend on not only the amount of residual stress but also the micro-structure. The result observed in this study demonstrates the high potential of the backward radiated ultrasound as a tool for the nondestructive evaluation of the subsurface gradients of materials.

  • Multiconductor transmission line(MTL) equations are solved by FDTD(Finite-Difference Time-Domain) method to predict crosstalk and fields to transmission line coupling on lossy multiconductor transmission lines terminated in arbitrary linear loads. Skin effect losses as well as dc losses are included in the analysis. In order to increase computational efficiency, the convolution integral of internal impedance of conductors and the line currents is computed by using Prony method. For boundary conditions of MTLs terminated in linear loads, state-variable formulation is adopted. The simulated results by FDTD method are compared with the measured ones obtained by using TEM cell. The predictions are in good agreement with the measurements. In addition, it has been found that skin effect losses as well as dc losses of the conductors should be included for accurate predictions on relatively high loss transmission lines such as PCB. It has also been found that dc losses and skin-effect losses affect late-time responses and early-time responses, respectively.

  • The problem of electromagnetic coupling into a thin conducting wire through a slot in an infinite conducting is analyzed by use of MPIE(mixed potential integral equation) and two- dimensional moment method using subsectional(rooftop) basis functions. The equivalent circuit is derived using a center-repesentation method which is valid in a narrow slot case. The equi- valent magnetic currents on the slot and the induced currents on the wire are caculated respec- tively, for the TM wave is incident upon the slot with arbitrary angle of incidence. The theoretical transmission coefficients of transmission line which is composed of thin-wire and infinite conducting plate with a narrow slot are compared and found to be in good agreement with experimental results.

  • In this paper, H-polarized electromagnetic scattering problems by a resistive strip grating over a grounded dielectric plane according to the strip width and grating period, the relative permittivity and thickness of a dielectric layer, and incident angles of a TE (transverse electric) plane wave are analyzed by applying the FGMM (Fourier-Galerkin Moment Method). The tapered resistivity of resistive strips in this paper varies from finite resistivity at one edge to zero resistivity at the other edge, then the induced surface current density on the resistive strip is expanded in a series of Jacobi polynomials of the order ${\alpha}=1$, ${\beta}=0$ as a kind of orthogonal polynomials. The numerical results of the normalized reflected power show in good agreement with those of existing papers.

  • This paper proposes the Focused beamforming to estimate the location of target residing near to the observation platform in the underwater environment. The Focused beamforming technique provides the location of target by the coherent summation of a series of incident spherical waveforms considering distinct propagation delay times at the sensor array. But due to the movement of the observation platform and the variation of the underwater environment, the shape of the sensor array is no longer to be linear but it becomes distorted as the platform moves. Thus the Focused beamforming should be peformed regarding to the geometric shape variation at each time. To estimate the target location, the artificial image plane comprised of cells is constructed, and the delays are calculated from each cell where the target could be proximity to sensors for the coherent summation. After the coherent combining, the beam pattern can be obtained through the Focused beamforming on the image plane. Futhermore to compensate the variation of the shape of the sensor array, the paper utilizes the Nth-order polynomial approximation to estimate the shape of the sensor array obeying the water pulley modeling. Simulation results show the performance of the Focused beamforming for different frequency bands of the radiated signal.

  • Morison formula has been used in the determination of wave forces acting on vertical cylindrical piles of ocean structures. The formula, however, can be applied to mildly varying varying incident waves with symmetrical shapes. The breaking waves impinge on structures with very high impact forces, which completely differ from the inertia and drag forces of the Morison formula in both magnitudes and characteristics. In the present study, a boundary element method is applied to determine the water particle velocity and acceleration under the breaking waves. A numerical model is then developed to determine breaking wave forces utilizing those water particle kinematics. The results of the model is then developed to determine breaking wave forces utilizing those water particle kinematics. The results of the model agree well with existing experimental data, giving maximal wave forces 3 times and maximal moments 5 times larger than the Morison formula does.

  • Laboratory experiments were conducted for tsunami inundation to an urban area with large building roughness. The waterfront portion of the city of Seaside which is located on the US Pacific Northwest coast, was replicated in 1/50 scale in the wave basin. Tsunami heights and velocities on the inundated land were measured at approximately 31 locations for one incident tsunami heights with an inundation height of approximately 10 m (prototype) near the shoreline. The inundation pattern and speed were more severe and faster in some areas due to the arrangement of the large buildings. Momentum fluxes along the roads were estimated using measure tsunami inundation heights and horizontal fluid velocities. As expected, the maximum momentum flux was near the shoreline and decreased landward. Inundation heights and momentum flux were slowly decreased through the road with buildings on each side. The results from this study showed that the horizontal inundation velocity is an important factor for the external force of coastal structures.

  • In this paper, TE(transverse electric) scattering problems by a resistive strip grating over grounded dielectric multilayers according to the strip width and grating period, the relative permittivity and thickness of dielectric multilayers, and incident angles of a TE plane wave are analyzed by applying the FGMM(Fourier-Galerkin Moment Method) known as a numerical procedure. The induced surface current density is simply expanded in a Fourier series by using the exponential function as a simple function. Generally, the relected power gets increased according as the relative permittivity and thickness of dielectric multilayers gets increased, the sharp variations of the reflected power are due to resonance effects that take place and were previously called wood's anomallies$^{[7]}$. To verify the validity of the proposed method, the numerical results of normalized reflected power for the uniform resistivity R = 0 as a conductive strip case show in good agreement with those in the existing paper.

  • The discrimination studies between earthquakes and underground nuclear explosions have been carried out by various seismologists(Nuttli and Kim, 1976; Dahiman and Israelson, 1977; Masse, 1981). The discrimination between local microearthquakes and artificial underground explosions(epicentral distance not greater than 400Km), however, has not been actively studied so far in the light of seismological aspects. Futhermore this kind of research has never been performed in Korea even if it is of great importance for IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) to clearly analyze the military nuclear power of North Korea at present. This research has been carried out by using some of the artificial underground explosions(about 100 events) have occurred in North Korea for the last six years. The azimuths, apparent incidence angles, epicentral distances and locations are determined using a single station of 3 - component data. The detection, location and identification are performed through the polarization and the bandpass filtering. This technique can be also applied to study the inhomogeneous crustal structure finding the converted waves.
