AVO and complex trace analyses mainly used to characterize natural gas reservoir were tested in this paper for a possible application to detection of major geological discontinuities such as fracture zones. The test data used in this study were calculated by utilizing a viscoelastic numerical program which was based on the generalized Maxwell body for a horizontal fracture model. In AVO analysis of a horizontal fracture zone, p-wave reflection appears to be variant depending upon the acoustic-impedence contrast and the offset distance. The fracture zone is also effectively clarified both in gradient stack and range-limited stack in which fracture zone reflection is attenuated with the increasing offset distance. In complex attribute plots (instantaneous amplitude, frequency, and phase), the top and bottom of the fracture Tone are characterized by a zone of strong amplitudes and an event of the same phase. Low frequency characteristics appear at the fracture zone and the underneath. Amplitude attenuation and waveform dispersion are dependent on Q-contrast between the fracture zone and the surrounding media. They were properly compensated by optimum inverse Q-filtering.

Field measurements were made for long- and short-period waves and current velocities at the harbor mouth using pressure-type wave gauges and a current meter, respectively, at the Gamcheon Harbor which has a rectangular shape with a narrow entrance. The measured pressure data were subjected to spectral analyses after removing tidal effects by applying trend removal and high-pass filtering. For the band averaging of the raw spectra, in order to obtain good resolution over the entire frequency, instead of a constant band width, variable band widths were used, which gradually increase as marching from the lowest frequency towards higher frequencies. The Helmholtz resonance mode at the Gamcheon Harbor shows the relative amplification ratio of 9.2 at the wave period of 31.7 minutes, which is quite large compared with those at the harbors located on the east coast of Korea. The second and the third resonance period was 10.3 and 5.4 minute, respectively. On the other hand, the analysis of every 24 hours data shows that during storms the spectral densities are very large compared to those during calm seas and also the second and third resonances are predominant.

In this paper, we measured the propagation path loss by a ground to air flight communication test at UHF band and analyzed the results. The ground receiving terminal was located at 1,100m above sea level in Cheju Island and the airborne transmit terminal flew at an altitude of 3.5km from 150 to 220km from the ground terminal. In this case, the ground terminal and the airborne terminal are on the Line of Sight. Therefore loss in this communications environment can be predicted based on Free Space Loss. However, in this test, the sea level exists between two terminals, and due to the very small angle of incidence on the reflecting surface due to the long-range communication environment, it is not possible to accurately predict the loss of free space only. Therefore, considering that there are no surrounding obstacles and that a line of sight is secured between the end of two terminals, we applied a plane earth reflection model and a spherical earth reflection model to estimate the propagation path loss and compared with the actual test results. As a result of the comparison, the predicted propagation path loss by a spherical earth reflection model were quite similar to the actual test values.

This review summarizes advantage and limitation in infrared spectroscopy and computational chemistry to understand rhizospheric interaction among organic acids, oxyanions and metal oxides. Since organic acids and metal oxides determine dynamics of oxyanions in the soil environment, knowledge of fundamental mechanisms is a prerequisite for understanding the interactions at soil-water interface. Attenuated total reflectance-fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) is a powerful tool to measure the interfacial reactions. However, the ATR-FTIR measurements are abstruse, because the optical characteristics for measurements are variable depending on the experimental setup. In addition, spectral overlapping is a primary obstacle to the analysis of the interfacial reaction; thus, it is essential to detect and to deconvolute bands for signal interpretation. In this review, we expained the fundamental principle for spectrum processing, and four band identification methods, such as derivative spectroscopy, two-dimension correlation spectroscopy, multivariate curve resolution, and computational chemistry with example of aqueous phosphate speciation. As a result, spectrum processing and computational chemistry improved interpretation and spectral deconvolution of overlapped spectra in relatively simple systems, but it was still unsatisfactory for the problems in more complexed system like nature. Nevertheless, we believed that our challenge would contribute practically to develop adequate analytical procedure, signal processing and protocols that could help to improve interpretation and to understand the interfacial interactions of oxyanions in natural systems.

We have studied methods of detecting attenuation of solid materials such as silicon wafer and piezoelectric $LiTaO_3$ by means of optical probing techniques. We have performed measurements of surface acoustic waves(SAW) generated from 90 degree wedge type transducer and also from inter-digital transducers(IDT). SAW of 20.0 MHz was generated on a silicon wafer from the 90 degree wedge type transducer and those of 20.8 and 14.5 MHz are generated on a $LiTaO_3$ from the IDT. Then any surface-corrugation resulted from the above SAW was investigated by He-Ne laser beams. We projected laser beams, which were modulated by an optical chopper, on the SAW of the same frequency and then measured the scattered beam by the lock-in amplifier. We modulated and synchronized both SAW and the incident laser beam as well as the phase sensitive detector(PSD) to the same frequency in order to simplify our measurement system. We obtained the attenuation coefficients of SAW to be $0.62{\sim}0.75dB/mm$(from IDT1, 20.8 MHz), and $0.60{\sim}0.72dB/mm$(from IDT2, 14.5 MHz), $0.83{\sim}1.28dB/mm$(from the wedge type), respectively.
Chogye basin, which is surrounded by country rock, has a closed-basin form. In such a basin, incident seismic energy can form multiply reflected waves, thus causing energy concentration to occur at this closed-basin area. Microtremor measurement survey was performed at the Chogye basin, which is located in Chogye-myeon and Jeokjungmyeon, Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Republic of Korea. Microtremor data were transformed into the frequency domain, and then the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratios (HVSR) were calculated. Fundamental resonance frequencies were estimated from the HVSR results for every observation point. Using the empirical relationship between site period and thickness for sediment sites in Korea known from the previous study, the distribution of sediment thickness of the Chogye basin was estimated from the fundamental resonance frequencies. Being compared with the mountainous rim with steep slope, the measurement points inside the basin have low values of the fundamental resonance frequency with the minimum of 1.03 Hz, which corresponds to the thickness of sedimentary layer with the maximum depth of about 100 m. A three-dimensional basin model was constructed for bedrock topography of the Chogye basin by an interpolation of basin depths estimated at each measurement site.

In this paper, a coupling scheme for applying finite element analysis(FEA) programs, such as, LS-DYNA and MIDAS/Civil, to a nonlinear soil structure interaction analysis by the boundary reaction method(BRM) is presented. With the FEA programs, the structure and soil media are discretized by linear or nonlinear finite elements. To absorb the outgoing elastic waves to unbounded soil region as much as possible, the PML elements and viscous-spring elements are used at the outer FE boundary, in the LS-DYNA model and in MIDAS/Civil model, respectively. It is also assumed that all the nonlinear elements in the problem are limited to structural region. In this study, the boundary reaction forces for the use in the BRM are calculated using the KIESSI-3D program by solving soil-foundation interaction problem subjected to incident seismic waves. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated with a linear SSI seismic analysis problem by comparing the BRM solution with the conventional SSI solution. Numerical comparison indicates that the BRM can effectively be applied to a nonlinear soil-structure analysis if motions at the foundation obtained by the BRM for a linear SSI problem excluding the nonlinear structure is conservative.

Recently, the theoretical and experimental research is being made actively in control character of waves of perforated-wall caisson breakwater like the slit caisson. This study showed that the character of reflection coefficient and the wave pressure acting on the front and inner of slit caisson were estimated in two and three dimensional numerical wave flume and compared each other. The numerical experiment was set and conducted by various cases as to a variety of wave steepness under 7 sec, 9 sec, 11sec and 13 sec period condition. In this study using a 2 and 3 dimensional numerical wave flume, it applied the Model for the immiscible two-phase flow based on the Naveir-Stokes Equations. This technique can easily reproduce a complicated physical phenomenon more than others and organize the program simply. According to the results of the experiment, the reflection coefficient was estimated high in short-period waves. However, 2-dimensional numerical experiment and 3-dimensional numerical experiment were the same in case of the long-period waves and high wave steepness. And to conclude in case of short-period waves the pressures were a relatively small difference between the two, but there was a big gap in longperiod waves and high wave steepness.

An integrated sediment management approach that includes the recovery of the amount of declined sediment supply is effective as a fundamental solution to coastal erosion. During planning, it is essential to analyze the transfer mechanism of the sediments generated from estuaries (the junction between a river and sea) to assess the amount and rate of sediment discharge (from the river to sea) supplied back to the coast. Although numerical models that interpret the tidal sand bar flushing process during flooding have been studied, thus far, there has been no study focusing on the formation and development processes of tidal sand bars. Therefore, this study aims to construct wave deformation, flow regime calculation, and topographic change analysis models to assess the amount of recovered sediment discharge and reproduce the tidal sand bar formation process through numerical analysis for integrated littoral drift management. The tidal sand bar formation process was simulated, and the wave energy and duration of action concepts were implemented to predict the long-term littoral movement. The river flux and wave conditions during winter when tidal sand bars dominantly develop were considered as the external force conditions required for calculation. The initial condition of the topographic data directly after the Maeupcheon tidal sand bar flushing during flooding was set as the initial topography. Consequently, the tidal sand bar formation and development due to nearshore currents dependent on the incident wave direction were reproduced. Approximately 66 h after the initial topography, a sand bar formation was observed at the Maengbang estuary.
On September 23, 2020, at 1:39 a.m., a bright fireball above Seocheon was observed across the country. Two fireball explosions were identified in the images of the All-Sky Camera (ASC), and the shock waves were recorded at seismic and infrasound stations in the southwestern Korean Peninsula. The location of the explosion was estimated by a Bayesian-based location method using the arrival times of the fireball-associated seismic and infrasound signals at 17 stations. Realistic azimuth- and rang-dependent propagation speeds of sound waves were incorporated into the location method to increase the reliability of the results. The location of the sound source was found to be 36.050°N, 126.855°E at an altitude of 35 km, which was close to the location of the second fireball explosion. The two explosions were identified as sequential infrasound arrivals at local infrasound stations. Simulations of waveforms for long ranges explain the detection results at distant infrasound stations, up to ~266 km from the sound source. The dominant period of the signals recorded at five infrasound stations is about 0.4 s. A period-energy relation suggests the explosion energy was equivalent to ~0.3 ton of TNT.
