  • In this research, the algorithm for simulating specific grain size distribution(GSD) with large diameter granular material was developed using the distinct element analysis program $PFC^{3D}$(Particle Flow Code). This modeling approach can generate the initial distinct elements without clump logic or cluster logic and prevent distinct element from escaping through the confining walls during the process. Finally the proposed distinct element model is used to simulate large triaxial compression test of the rockfill material and we compared the simulation output with lab test results. Simulation results of Assembly showed very well agreement with the GSD of the test sample and numerical modeling of granular material would be possible for various stress conditions using this application through the calibration.

  • Heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cr, Co, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb) were determined in ninety-one surface sediments collected from Kwangyang Bay, south coast of Korea. The data show that the Fe, Cr, Ni, and Zn distribution in the bay can be described by metal vs. grain size relationship. However, the distribution pattern of Mn, Co, Cu and Pb were found to be changed because they are anthropogenically enriched to sediment. Correlation matrix and R-mode factor analyses revealed that two important factors controlling the distribution of metals in the bay are grain size and anthropogenic input.

  • The physical properties of gold investment materials are depending on it's thermal expansion coefficients, compressive strength, and particles size distributions. Normally the gold investment materials are consisted of cristobalite, quartz and plaster. Since the thermal expansion coefficient of cristobalite and quartz are $2.6\times10^{-6}/^\circC$, $2.32\times10^{-6}/^\circC$, respectively, the composition ratio of each components influence the thermal and clinical properties of gold investment materials. Recently are imported from overseas and the commercial market is expected to expand. Thus it is necessary to develop the optimum strength and compressive strength of gold investment materials which the an homogeneous size distribution and thermal expansion coefficients. Therefore two different experiments has been done. Firstly the homogeneous cristobalite and quartz are made by pulverizing milling. Secondly the compressive strength and thermal expansion coefficients are analysed by the composition ratio of cristobalite and quartz. As a results of experiments, homogeneous distribution of cristobalite and quartz are observed by pulverizing and milling. The optimum compressive strength was obtained at the ratio of 45:25 cristobalite, quartz respectively.

  • This study evaluated the shear behavior of geogrid reinforced ballast material using a large scale direct shear test and discrete element method (DEM) based on PFC 3D program. The direct shear test was conducted on ballast materials that have different particle size distributions. Whereas the test results revealed that the shear strength generally increased with the larger particle size of ballast material without geogrid reinforcement, the shear behavior of ballast material was found to change pertaining to the relationship between particle size distribution and geogrid rib size. Generally, it is deemed the effectiveness of reinforcement can be achieved when the rib size is two times greater than average particle size. A numerical analysis based on DEM was conducted to verify the test results. The geogrid modeling was successfully completed by calibration process along with sensitivity analysis to have actual tensile strength provided by manufacturer. With a given geogrid model, the parametric evaluation was further carried out to examine the interactive behavior between geogrid and ballast material. Consequently, it was found that the effectiveness zone of geogrid reinforcement generated within a specific depth.

  • Various geological thematic maps have been generated by interpolating sparsely sampled ground survey data and geostatistical kriging that can consider spatial correlation between neighboring data has widely been used. This paper applies multi-variate geostatistical algorithms to integrate secondary information with sparsely sampled ground survey data for geological thematic mapping. Simple kriging with local means and kriging with an external drift are applied among several multi-variate geostatistical algorithms. Two case studies for spatial mapping of groundwater level and grain size have been carried out to illustrate the effectiveness of multi-variate geostatistical algorithms. A digital elevation model and IKONOS remote sensing imagery were used as secondary information in two case studies. Two multi-variate geostatistical algorithms, which can account for both spatial correlation of neighboring data and secondary data, showed smaller prediction errors and more local variations than those of ordinary kriging and linear regression. The benefit of applying the multi-variate geostatistical algorithms, however, depends on sampling density, magnitudes of correlation between primary and secondary data, and spatial correlation of primary data. As a result, the experiment for spatial mapping of grain size in which the effects of those factors were dominant showed that the effect of using the secondary data was relatively small than the experiment for spatial mapping of groundwater level.

  • The bed change model of HEC-RAS was used to predict the formation of a delta upon an influx of high-density sediment while taking the particle-size distributions of the suspended sediment and bed materials into account. The model was able to reasonably predict both the spatial-temporal distribution of the delta and the amount of deposited sediment according to the grain size. In addition, it was able to estimate the main type of grains that sediment at particular locations at particular times moderately well. It is expected that the simulation and the analysis considering these particle-size distributions of sediment will provide important information on planning and maintenance of the water resource related facilities.

  • Rice was ground on a blade-type food mixer and sieved on meshes. The throughs on 60 and 80 mesh sieves were significantly different among maturity groups. The hardness of rice grain was negatively correlated with throughs on 60 and 80 mesh sieves and positively correlated with overs on 20 mesh sieve. The amylograph peak viscosity was increased as the particles became finer, but peak viscosities of the throughs on 60 and 80 mesh sieves were not significantly different.
