  • Over the past few decades, considerable numbers of studies on the durability of concrete have been carried out extensively. A lot of improvements have been achieved especially in both measuring techniques as well as modeling of ionic flows. However, the majority of these researches have been performed on sound uncracked concrete, although most of in-situ concrete structures have more or less micro-cracks. It is only recent approach that the attention has shifted towards the influence of cracks and crack width on the penetration of chloride into concrete. The penetration of chlorides into concrete through the cracks can make a significant harmful effect on reinforcement corrosion. On the other hand, a general acceptable crack width of 0.3 mm has been recognized for keeping the serviceability of concrete structures in accordance with a lot of codes. However, there seems to be rare established description to explain the critical crack width in terms of the durability of concrete. To make a bad situation worse, there is little agreement on critical crack width among a few of literatures for this issue. Critical crack width is still controversial problem. Nevertheless, since the critical crack width is important key for healthy assessment of concrete structures exposed to marine environment, it should be established. The objective of this study is to define a critical crack width. The critical crack width in this study is designed for a threshold crack width, which contributes to the first variation of chloride diffusion coefficient in responsive to the existence of cracks. A simple solution is formulated to realize the quantifiable parameter, chloride diffusion coefficient for only cracked zone excluding sound concrete. From the examination on the trend of chloride diffusion coefficient of only cracked zone for various crack widths, a critical crack width is founded out.

  • Especially, when orthotropic material such as uni-dierectionally woven Carbon Fiber Sheet, resisting only the unidirectional tension, is used to strengthening bridge deck, the direction and width of the strengthening material should be considered very carefully. Thus, analysis of the failure characteristics and the premature failure mechanism of the strengthened decks based on the test results are required. In this study, the premature failure due to the interface debonding of strengthening material of the strengthened deck slab are inquired into failure mechanism through both experiments results and analyses with prototype strengthened deck specimens using carbon fiber sheet. From the test results, interface debonding of strengthening material is occured at the crack face

  • The vulnerability of concrete to its environment is significantly dependent on the fact that concrete is a porous material. For well-consolidated and well-cured concrete, its service life is a very long and an entrance of aggressive substance might be only pores. However, for cracked concrete, cracks should be preferential channel for the penetration of aggressive substance such as chloride ions. The effect of crack on chloride penetration depends on its size for example, crack width and crack depth. The purpose of this study is examining the effect of crack width and crack depth on chloride penetration. In order to visualize chloride penetration via cracks, RCM (rapid chloride migration) testing is accomplished. Crack width is examined using an optical microscope and CMOD value is used to estimate average crack width. From the examination on the trend of chloride diffusion coefficients of concrete specimens with various crack widths, a critical crack width and a critical crack depth are found out.

  • In this study, the chloride penetration tests were performed for the initially cracked reinforced concrete members. The chloride diffusion characteristics and the critical crack width are compared, and the properties of self-healing are investigated. According to the test results, the chloride penetration resistance was greatly reduced as the surface crack width increased. When the mineral admixtures are added, the chloride penetration resistance of uncracked specimens were effectively increased, however, in case of the blast furnace slag and fly ash, the cracked specimens showed the more reduced resistance than OPC case, inversely. Also, the critical width was $29{\mu}m$, on average, for immersion test. The crack width with $4{\sim}15{\mu}m$ was restored by self-healing, The parts restored by self-healing were seemed to be visually restored, however, the chloride penetration resistance was not restored, perfectly.

  • For cracked concrete, it is obvious that cracks should be preferential channel for the penetration of aggressive substances such as chloride ions according to the previous researches. In order to extend the lifetime of cracked concrete, critical issues in the performance of the concrete is the risk of chloride-induced corrosion. Even though crack width can be reduced due to the high reinforcement ratio, the question is to which extend these cracks may jeopardize the durability of cracked concrete. If the size of crack is small, surface treatment system can be considered as one of the best options to extend the service life of concrete structures exposed to marine environment simply in terms of cost effectiveness versus durability performance. Thus, it should be decided to undertake an experimental study on the effect of surface coating system, which can be able to seal the concrete and the cracks to aggressive substances-induced corrosion in particular. In this study, it is excuted to examine the effect of surfaced treated systems on chloride penetration and carbonation through compressive stress induced cracks. Experimental results have showed conclusively that critical stress linked with deterioration, should be existed in compressive stress ratio 50 ~ 70% for chloride penetration and 70 ~ 80% for carbonation, respectively. When the critical stress is exceeded in concrete, a comparatively large deterioration was measured where the critical stress in concrete, the increase in the mass transportation is marginal in spite of the large increase in micro-cracks. As for the effect of surface coating system on crack-sealing, it can be seen conclusively that cracks can be healed.

  • In order to simulate the crack connection between cords and the interply crack growth in the belt-layer of real tire, 2 ply rubber/cord laminate specimens with exposed edges were tested in 4~11mm displacement control. Measurement of the crack connection is evaluated when crack reaches the half of the length between 45$^{\circ}$ aligned cords, and the amount of the crack growth is measured by the steel probe method. 2 dimensional analytic modeling was performed to simulate the crack connection between cords at the exposed edges. Also, the theoretical life of the specimens was calculated from the crack connection life between cords(critical value) and from the critical value to the final failure by the use of Tearing energy(T); the strain energy release per unit area of one fracture surface of a crack. Then, theoretical life was compared with those of experiments. The life prediction up to the critical value has about 20% error compared to experimental life, and up to the final failure about 65% error. Therefore, total theoretical life has about 45% error compared to the experimental life, which is conceivable in the case of rubber.

  • In South Korea, sewage pipeline exploration devices have been developed using high resolution digital cameras of 2 mega-pixels or more. On the other hand, most devices are less than 300 kilo-pixels. Moreover, because 100 kilo-pixels devices are used widely, the environment for image processing is very poor. In this study, very low resolution ($240{\times}320$ = 76,800 pixels) images were adapted when it is difficult to detect cracks. Considering that the images of sewers in South Korea have very low resolution, this study selected low resolution images to be investigated. An automatic crack detection technique was studied using digital image processing technology for low resolution images of sewage pipelines. The authors developed a program to automatically detect cracks as 6 steps based on the MATLAB functions. In this study, the second step covers an algorithm developed to find the optimal threshold value, and the fifth step deals with an algorithm to determine cracks. In step 2, Otsu's threshold for images with a white caption was higher than that for an image without caption. Therefore, the optimal threshold was found by decreasing the Otsu threshold by 0.01 from the beginning. Step 5 presents an algorithm that detects cracks by judging that the length is 10 mm (40 pixels) or more and the width is 1 mm (4 pixels) or more. As a result, the crack detection performance was good despite the very low-resolution images.

  • It is obvious that chloride penetration through cracks can threaten the durability of concrete substantially, according to the previous studies of author. It was proposed that crack depth corrseponded with critical crack width from the surface is a crucial factor in view of durability design of concrete structures. It is now necessary to deal with chloride penetration through microcracks characterized with the mixing features of concrete. The purpose of this study is examining the effect of mix proportional features of concrete such as coarse aggregate, high strengtherize of concrete and reinforcement of steel fiber on chloride penetration through cracks. Although small size of coarse aggregate can lead to many microcracks in concrete, the cracks should not impact on chloride penetration directly. On the contrary, chloride should penetrate through cracks easily in concrete with a large size of coarse aggregate because mixrocracks are connected to each other. Second, high strength concrete has an excellent performance to resist with chloride penetration. However, for cracked high strength concrete, its performance is reduced upto the level of ordinary concrete. Finally, steel fiber reinforcement is effective to reduce chloride penetration through cracks because steel fiber reinforcement can lead to reduce crack depth significantly.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of residual stress on fatigue crack growth behavior. For this purpose, submerged arc welding was performed on SM50A steel plate and post weld heta treatment (PWHT) was followed. Residual stress distribution on the weld plate was determined by a hole drilling method and a series of .DELTA.P-const. and .DELTA.K-decreasing fatigue test were performed on the three different regions, i.e. weld metal, HAZ and base metla. Following conclusins were achieved. 1. In "as welded" specimens, tensile residual stresses were produced in the center portion of the specimen while compressive residual stresses were produced near the edges. In PWHT specimens, however, most of the residual stresses were disappeared. 2. The fatigue crack growth behavior in low .DELTA.K region was considerably affected by the presence of residual stress in both "as welded" and PWHT specimens. 3. Because of the relaxation of residual stresses in PWHT condition, the values of m increased from 2.62-2.78 (in the "as welded" condition) to 3.57-3.91 (in the "PWHT" condition)3.91 (in the "PWHT" condition)condition)

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of residual stresses on the $\Delta$K$\sub$th/ and fatigue crack growth behavior of butt weldments. For this purpose, transverse butt sutmerged arc welding was performed on SM50A steel plate and CT(compact tension) specimens which loading direction is perpendicular to weld bead were selected. Welding residual stresses distribution on the specimen was determined by hole drilling method. The case of crack located parallel to weld bead, the states of as weld and PWHT, $\Delta$K$\sub$th/ of specimens(HAZ, weld zone) was higher than that of the base metal probably because of the compressive residual stresses of crack tip. In low $\Delta$K region, it is estimated that the effects of residual stresses for da/dN are great. In region II, the da/dN of weldments in as weld state was lower than that of the base metal. Though da/dN of Weldments in PWHT state was similar to that of the base metal. The constant of power law, m in two states consisted with the base metal. Therefore , it is estimated that the value of m is not affected by residual stresses. Fatigue crack growth behavior of weldments consisted with the base metal considering the effective stress intensity factor range($\Delta$K$\sub$eff/) included the effect of initial residual stress(Kres). Thus, we can predict the fatigue crack growth behavior of weldment by knowing the distribution of initial residual stress at the crack tip.
