  • This paper investigates the characteristics of buckling loads for steel arches with new type cross section which is consisted of T-section and pipe-section. A general purpose finite-element program ABAQUS was used to evaluate the inelastic buckling strengths of the arches which included the influence of the geometric and material nonlinearity. According to the comparisons between earlier studies and results from finite-element analyses, new design equations should be developed for the new arches. New buckling factors were developed to consider influence of rise-to-span ratio and boundary conditions. It is found that the presented factors are sufficiently accurate to predict the inplane buckling loads of new type section steel arches subjected to uniformly distributed loading. The proposed equations can be used to investigate new type steel arches subjected to unsymmetrical loading and composited arches.

  • Ship structure basically consists of plate members and it's overall strength depends an the stiffness and strength of each plate member. The buckling strength of plate is one of the most important design criteria when we investigate the structural intergraty. Therefore, it is necessary to surly reasonable buckling formula in order to carry out a more efficient and reliable design. In the present study, the buckling design formula of plate panels under combined loads(inplane compression, tension and shear) is obtained on the theoretical solution or reference paper. This formula is compared with the existing theoretical solution, other author's formula[1], design codes of LR and results which are obtained by numerical analysis. It has a good correlation with numerical analysis results or theoretical ones. When we evaluate buckling strength of plate panels, this formula can be presented with reasonable accuracy.

  • The presence of elevated temperature can alter significantly the structural response of fibre-reinforced laminated composites. A thermal environment causes degradation in both strength and constitutive properties, particularly in the case of fibre-reinforced polymeric composites. Furthermore, associated thermal expansion, either alone or in combination with mechanically induced deformation, can result in buckling, large deflections, and excessively high stress levels. Consequently, it is often imperative to consider environmental effects in the analysis and design of laminated systems. Exact analytical solutions of higher-order shear deformation theory is developed to study the thermal buckling of cross-ply and antisymmetric angle-ply rectangular plates. The buckling behavior of moderately thick cross-ply and antisymmetric angle-ply laminates that are simply supported and subject to a uniform temperature rise is analyzed. Numerical results are presented for fiber-reinforced laminates and show the effects of ply orientation, number of layers, plate thickness, and aspects ratio on the critical buckling temperature and compared with those obtained using the classical and first-order shear deformation theory.

  • The two dimensional size effect of specimen gauge section ($length{\;}{\times}{\;}width$) was investigated on the compressive behavior of a T300/924 $\textrm{[}45/-45/0/90\textrm{]}_{3s}$, carbon fiber-epoxy laminate. A modified ICSTM compression test fixture was used together with an anti-buckling device to test 3mm thick specimens with a $30mm{\;}{\times}{\;}30mm,{\;}50mm{\;}{\times}{\;}50mm,{\;}70mm{\;}{\times}{\;}70mm{\;}and{\;}90mm{\;}{\times}{\;}90mm$ gauge length by width section. In all cases failure was sudden and occurred mainly within the gauge length. Post failure examination suggests that $0^{\circ}$ fiber microbuckling is the critical damage mechanism that causes final failure. This is the matrix dominated failure mode and its triggering depends very much on initial fiber waviness. It is suggested that manufacturing process and quality may play a significant role in determining the compressive strength. When the anti-buckling device was used on specimens, it was showed that the compressive strength with the device was slightly greater than that without the device due to surface friction between the specimen and the device by pretoque in bolts of the device. In the analysis result on influence of the anti-buckling device using the finite element method, it was found that the compressive strength with the anti-buckling device by loaded bolts was about 7% higher than actual compressive strength. Additionally, compressive tests on specimen with an open hole were performed. The local stress concentration arising from the hole dominates the strength of the laminate rather than the stresses in the bulk of the material. It is observed that the remote failure stress decreases with increasing hole size and specimen width but is generally well above the value one might predict from the elastic stress concentration factor. This suggests that the material is not ideally brittle and some stress relief occurs around the hole. X-ray radiography reveals that damage in the form of fiber microbuckling and delamination initiates at the edge of the hole at approximately 80% of the failure load and extends stably under increasing load before becoming unstable at a critical length of 2-3mm (depends on specimen geometry). This damage growth and failure are analysed by a linear cohesive zone model. Using the independently measured laminate parameters of unnotched compressive strength and in-plane fracture toughness the model predicts successfully the notched strength as a function of hole size and width.

  • Fiber-reinforced composite materials due to their high specific strength, high stiffness and light weight are becoming increasingly used in many engineering industry, especially in the aerospace, marin and civil, etc. In this paper, the buckling load and mode shapes of composite laminates with elliptical cross-section including transverse shear deformations are analyzed. For solving this problems, a versatile flat shell element has been developed by combining a membrane element with drilling degree-of-freedom and a plate bending element. Also, an improved shell element has been established by the combined use of the addition of enhanced assumed strain and the substitute shear strain fields. The combined influence of shell geometry and elliptical cross-sectional parameter, fiber angle, and lay-up on the buckling loads of elliptical cylinder is examined. The critical buckling loads and mode shapes analyzed here may serve as a benchmark for future investigations.

  • Most container ships are currently being constructed as Ultra-Large Container Ships. Hence, the equipment of the ships is also becoming relatively large. In particular, propellers, rudders, and rudder stocks are large in the stern structure, and in relation, efficient design of the hull structures to safely secure these parts is important. The bottom shell plate surface of a stern skeg is a perforated plate from which the rudder stock penetrates, so it is an important component for the stern structure. In this paper, to determine the critical buckling of the shell plate, an interaction curve equation for the two-axis compression of the shell plate was derived using the maximum value of the static structural stress multiplier in a load multiplier mode. This equation predicts the timing of the buckling occurrence. By analyzing this interaction curve equation, the buckling behavior of the plates subjected to a combination load was determined and the usefulness of applying it to ship building was investigated.

  • When arch ribs are subjected unsymmetrical load, buckling strength Is lower than strength of arch ribs subjected symmetrical load. However, A few study about the buckling strength of arch ribs subjected unsymmetrical load is performed compare with study about arch ribs subjected symmetrical load. Several researchers(Deutch : 1940, Chang : 1973, Harrison : 1982) studied about arch ribs subjected unsymmetrical load and they found that unsymmetrical loading reduces the critical buckling load. But, their results are limited parabolic arch ribs. This paper focuses on circular arch ribs subjected to unsymmetrical loading. The result shows that the ratio of live and dead load length to cause smallest critical buckling load of arch ribs is $0.6{\sim}0.7$ under geometric nonlinear condition and $0.5{\sim}0.6$ under both material and geometrical nonlinear conditions.
