  • This study aimed to explore phonological retrieval and phonological memory skills in second to third graders with dyslexia, poor comprehension, and typical development. The participants included 17 children with dyslexia, 17 children with poor comprehension, and 24 typically developing children. Children with dyslexia scored below 85 on the word decoding test, poor comprehender scored above 90 on the word decoding, and below 85 on the reading comprehension test and typical children scored above 90 on both reading tests. All participants were assessed on rapid automatized naming (RAN) and nonword repetition (NWR). The result indicated that children with dyslexia performed significantly worse on RAN and NWR tasks than other groups. However, there was significant differences between poor comprehender and typically developing children. Furthermore, only RAN were significantly correlated with word decoding and reading comprehension in children with dyslexia. For typically developing children, RAN was correlated with word decoding and reading comprehension, while NWR had a significant correlation with reading comprehension. No correlations were found between these variables for poor comprehender. The finding suggests that children with dyslexia showed difficulties on phonological retrieval and phonological memory, which are essential for reading development while poor comprehender do not have difficulties with phonological processing skills. Phonological processing deficits may underlie word decoding difficulties in dyslexia.

  • We assessed reading-related skills in children with reading comprehension difficulties ("Poor comprehenders"), word decoding difficulties ("Poor decoders") and normal readers, matched for age and nonverbal IQ. The reading-related skill tests used in our study are phonological processing, visual processing test, and receptive vocabulary test. The authors argue that children who had difficulty in reading comprehension had lower scores only on the phonological short-term memory test compared with normal readers, although their performance on receptive vocabulary and visual processing tests are comparable to normal readers. The results of our study revealed that poor decoders had lower scores on the phonological processing, visual processing, and receptive vocabulary tests.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the working memory that is related with reading. For this purpose, the third and fourth grade children with reading difficulty were compared with normal children. The gender comparison and the correlations among the three components of working memory were also examined. The results indicated that the reading difficulty group were outperformed by the normal group in every test. Gender difference was found only in visuospatial capacity. There was an interaction between reading and gender in the memory of dynamic mazes. In the whole group, every correlation among all components was significant. When the correlations were examined separately in each group, however, only one correlation was significant in both groups. When the influence of the central executive was controlled, the interrelationship between phonological working memory and visuospatial working memory was mitigated. This study suggests that when teaching children with reading difficulty instructional material should be succinct and visuospatial information needs to be used for boys if possible.

  • This study aims to testify the effect of reading and writing abilities improvement program for elementary school children from multicultural families. Methods: The research design used in this study was a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest research design. The participants were divided into two groups, an experimental group(n=9) and a control group(n=8). Data were analysed by using Mann-Whinety U test, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks, Cohen's d with SPSS(PASW)18.0 program. Result: Significant differences were found in scores for reading ability (z=-2.668, p=.008, ES(d)=0.6) and writing ability (z=-2.670, p=.008, ES(d)=0.5) in experimental group. Conclusion: The results indicate that the reading and writing abilities improvement program should be used with elementary school children of multicultural families to help them and to improve their reading and writing abilities.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of reading, writing fluency of the underachieving children and stuttering children and school-aged children and frequency of errors. The participants were 15 underachieving children and 15 stuttering children and 15 school-aged children without disabilities. All participants were required to conduct reading, writing, speaking tasks. First, work for the reading tasks were different among the underachieving children and stuttering children and school-aged children. Second, writing tasks were not different among the groups in the writing fluency, but it was lacking in accuracy, which is stuttering, speaking fluency as well as their language fluency is suggesting the need for diagnosis and intervention. Third, this type of errors of writing tasks is showed higher levels of ommission, substitution, grammatical errors in the underachieving children group. The therapy of reading of stuttering also consider a treatment program that can be configured in the combined writing tasks.

  • This study investigated the effectiveness of reading intervention on at-risk readers from first through third grade. The 34 children below the 20th percentile on an oral reading fluency test participated in the reading intervention program for 15 weeks. They received small group instruction in one 40-minute session per week. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA, paired t-test and effect size for individual cases. Upon completion of the intervention, at-risk first graders showed significantly higher performance in print concept, word recognition, oral reading fluency and reading comprehension. The at-risk second and third graders improved only in oral reading fluency. Most of children who received the intervention demonstrated a large effect in oral reading fluency.

  • This study was conducted to compare and analyze trends in research on reading ability. To do this, collecting articles searched for 'reading ability', a keyword network analysis was performed based on the author's keyword. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the terms were used interchangeably in studies related to reading education at universities. In the study related to reading ability 1, the main research areas are school library, school librarian, information literacy, self-directed learning, and information service. In the study related to reading ability 2, the main research areas are children's early literacy, related reading difficulty and disability. In addition, studies on reading evaluation are being conducted in both areas, but not much activation has been performed. Studies involving adolescents show limited activity in both areas.

  • This study aims to investigate the effects of learning strategy-based early reading instruction for English underachieving students. For this purpose of the study, sixteen learning strategies were driven from the review of previous related literature and the result of the survey conducted to the students and the teachers. Strategy integrated early reading instruction was implemented to nine students for thirteen weeks. The word recognition test was conducted before and after the instruction to examine whether the instruction had effects on the increase of their early reading skill. In addition, in order to investigate certain change in students' affective aspects after the instruction. The research conducted survey to the students. A teacher's field note and students' class journal were also analyzed to verify the results from the quantitative test. The results indicated that the instruction led to the increase of students' early reading skills. It was also found that the instruction motivated the underachieving students to devise a strategy for their learning process.
