Circadian Preference and Defense in Medical Students : Greater Consumption and Lesser Sublimation Predicting Eveningness (의학전문대학원 학생들의 일주기 선호와 방어기제)

  • Objectives: Previous studies have reported an association between circadian preference and personality. Defense mechanism is unconscious ego process which deals with an individual's anxiety and is closely associated with one's personality. Our aim is to investigate the association between defense mechanism and circadian preference in medical students. Methods: One hundred forty eight medical students (70 males, 78 females), aged 22 to 30, answered the Beck Depression Inventory-II, Morningness-eveningness Questionnaire, and Korean version of Defense Style Questinnaire. Results: Consumption (beta=-0.262, p=0.001) and being a male (beta=0.175, p=0.031) were significant positive predictors of eveningness, while sublimation (beta=0.185, p=0.023) was a significant negative predictor of eveningness. Conclusion: Our study showed a relationship between specific defense mechanisms (i.e., consumption and sublimation) and eveningness in medical students, but it did not address whether the relationship is a causal one.

Assessment and Understanding of Chronotype (일주기 유형의 평가와 이해)

  • Chronotype (CT) is defined as an inter-individual difference in sleep-wake cycles and daily activities. Previous studies have suggested that this individual difference can influence our biological and psychological functioning. Literature regarding the psychometric properties and validity of CT measures are reviewed. We provide an overview of biological indicators (sleep-wake cycle, body temperature, cortisol, and melatonin) that are used for distinguishing two chronotypes: morningness (MT) and eveningness (ET). We also review the differences between CT in relation to personality traits and the occurrence of psychopathology. In addition, the methodological limitations of studies on CT are discussed. Finally, future research directions in terms of CT are proposed.

Life Satisfaction and Bipolarity according to Circadian Typology (일주기 유형에 따른 삶의 만족도와 양극성 경향)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among circadian typology, bipolarity and life satisfaction of university students. Methods A total 1232 participants completed questionnaires, which included Composite Scale of Morningness (CSM), Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), and Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ). Statistical analyses were done using correlation analysis, and analysis of covariance. Results The CSM score was positively associated with SWLS score (r = 0.232 ; p < 0.001). The morningness group has higher life satisfaction than the eveningness group (p < 0.001). The eveningness group has higher bipolarity than the morningness group (p < 0.001). The CSM score was negatively associated with MDQ score (r = -0.128 ; p < 0.001). Conclusions Bipolarity and life satisfaction were associated with circadian typology. Morningness was the important determinant of life satisfaction and bipolarity.

Nutrition Intake according to Food and Exercise Habits in Female College Students of Yang-Ju si (경기도 양주시 여대생의 식습관, 운동습관, 건강관련행동이 영양섭취수준에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was intended to investigate food, exercise habits, perception of health status and the effects of nutrient intake of female college students. Food habits such as regularity of meal time, repast of breakfast, numbers of night snack per week and duration of meal were assessed via a self reporting questionnaire, and 24hrs recall method for nutrient intake was obtained from 155 female college students in Yangju-si. The mean height and weight of the subjects were $161.25{\pm}3.52cm$ and $52.26{\pm}4.52kg$, respectively. The average intakes of energy and nutrients were below the Korea recommended dietary allowance(RDA). Especially, The nutrient intakes(energy, protein, fat, fiber, calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, sodium, potassium, vitamin B6, niacin, vitamin C, folate, vitamin E, cholesterol) of the group in which the regularity of meal time per week was 5~7 days was significantly higher than the group in which the regularity of meal time was < 3 days (p<0.005). The nutrient intakes influenced by the food habit such as the regularity of meal time, skipping breakfast, and the numbers of night snack per week but did not differ in accordance with the regular exercise habits and perception of health status. These findings suggest that nutritional education based on female college students' food habits(regularity of meal time, skipping breakfast and night snacks per week, and duration of meal) may be required to improve dietary variety. It is considered that the improvement in dietary habits will contribute to the improvement of nutrition.

Association of the RORA Gene Polymorphism and Diurnal Preference in a Young Korean Population (RORA 유전자 다형성과 한국인 젊은 성인에서 일중선호도와의 연관성)

  • Objectives: The retinoid-related orphan receptor A (RORA) gene has been reported to have an impact on circadian rhythm regulation. In this study, we analyzed the relationship between the RORA gene polymorphism and diurnal preference in Korean young adults. Methods: A population of 504 young adults was included in the study. All subjects were given and completed a 13-item composite scale for morningness (CSM). The RORA gene rs11071547 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) was genotyped by PCR-based methods. Results: CSM score was not associated with genotype or allele carrier status of the RORA rs11071547 SNP. Conclusion: This result indicates that the RORA rs11071547 SNP does not play a role in diurnal preference.

Reproductive Factor and Food Intake Pattern Influencing on the Breast Cancer Risk in Daegu${\cdot}$Gyungbuk Area, Korea (대구${\cdot}$경북지역 유방암 위험에 영향 미치는 생식적 요인 및 식품섭취 패턴)

  • The present study examined the reproductive factors and food intake pattern which influence on the breast cancer risk in Daegu${\cdot}$Gyungbuk area. The case subjects were 103 patients newly diagnosed as breast cancer at Kyungpook National University Hospital. The control subjects were 159 healthy women selected by frequency matching of age and menopausal status in the same community. The survey was conducted by individual interviews using questionnaires which include general and reproductive characteristics, dietary habits, and food frequency. The odds ratios were calculated by using unconditional logistic regression after adjusting for confounding variables. The mean age of the subjects was 50 yrs, and mean body mass index was significantly high in the patient group than in the control. The patient group had a significantly higher familial history of breast cancer and a significantly shorter breast-feeding period compared to the control group. It has been found no significant relationship between extrinsic hormone use such as oral contraceptives or estrogen replacement therapy and breast cancer risk. In regard of food habits, a high preference for the cooking method of steaming rather than frying, panbroiling or roasting was significantly associated with lower relative risk of breast cancer. The higher intake frequencies of fruits for all subjects, and seaweeds only for postmenopausal subjects were related with a significantly lower relative risk of breast cancer. The results of the study suggest that the possible risk factors for the breast cancer occurrence include high BMI, family history, less breast feeding experience, preference for the cooking method of frying, and less consumption of fruits and seaweeds. This study provides an useful data for nutrition education to prevent breast cancer for the residents in Daegu${\cdot}$Gyungbuk area.

A Study on Nutritional Status and Food Habits According to Obese Index of High School Girls in Seoul (서울시내 여고생들의 비만도에 따른 영양상태와 식습관에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the nutritional status and food habits according to obese index of high school girls in seoul. Average height, weight, obesity rate, BMI and R hrer index of subjects were 160.2cm, 52.3kg, 96.3, 20.3 and 1.27, respectively. The average food habit score of subjects was 44.17 Subject's conceived ideal weight was lower than ideal body weight. Energy, carbohydrate, fats and protein intake of subjects were 1804kcal, 70g, 41g, 272g, respectively. Subjects had lower intake of energy, calcium, iron, thiamin, reboflavin and niacin. Nutrient intake showed positive correlation with educational level of parents, monthly family income, meal times, snack times and food habit score.

Awareness and Use of Fast Food on Elementary School 4th, 5th and 6th Grade Students in Pyeongtaek City (평택시 초등학생의 패스트푸드에 대한 인식과 이용)

  • 최근 아동들 사이에서 칼로리가 높고 간단하게 먹을 수 있는 인스턴트식품이나 패스트푸드 등의 섭취가 증가하는 경향과 함께 비만 등 영양적인 문제점이 크게 부각되고 있다. 특히 아동기는 식습관 형성에 중요한 시기이므로 올바른 식품선택은 무엇보다 중요하다고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 초등학교 학생들의 올바른 식생활문화를 형성하기 위한 자료로 활용하고자 평택 초등학교 2개교의 4, 5, 6학년 300명을 대상으로 패스트푸드 섭취실태를 조사하였다. 평균연령은 11.7세, 키는 141.5cm, 몸무게는 36.7kg이였다. 아침 식습관태도 조사에서는 일주일에 5번 이상 아침식사를 한다(여학생 78.1%, 남학생 74.3%)는 답이 가장 많았다. 아침결식 이유는 밥맛이 없기 때문(여 58.2%, 남 54.4%)이 가장 높은 비율이었고, 편식은 여학생의 54.2%, 남학생의 48.9%가 하지 않는다고 하였으나, 편식하는 식품은 나물이나 샐러드 등의 채소류(여 51.1%, 남 61.4%)가 많았다. 간식섭취는 가끔 섭취한다는 답이 여학생 59.8%, 남학생 60.0%로 높은 비율을 나타냈다. 간식은 부모님이 사주신다(여 32.6%, 남 39.1%)고 하였으며, 여학생은 50.5%가 가족과 함께 먹고 남학생의 경우에는 44.8%가 혼자 먹는다는 결과를 보였다. 간식으로 과일섭취가 이루어지고 있는지 조사한 결과는 여학생의 33.0%가 2-3일에 2회 이상 섭취한다고 했지만, 남학생은 29.5%가 매일 먹는다고 답을 하여 과일섭취는 모두 딸이 하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 패스트푸드의 이용동기는 맛이 좋아서(남 60.8% 여 55.2%), 다음은 이용이 편리하기 때문이며(남 32.4% 여 40.6%), 주로 이용하는 곳은 분식 및 편의점이었다. 패스트푸드 이용횟수는 월1-2회(남 52.4%, 여 51.6%)가 가장 많았으며, 다음이 주1회 정도(남 21.9%, 여 32.0%) 이용한다고 하였다. 이용시간은 방과 후 저녁시간을 가장 많이 이용하며(남 47.6%, 여 50.5%), 남 녀 모두 사서 집에서 먹거나(남 44.7%, 여 41.2%), 배달시켜 집에서 먹는다(남 39.8%, 여 37.1%)고 하였다. 가장 좋아하는 패스트푸드는 라면 등의 분식으로 여학생의 40.2%, 남학생의 26.2%가 해당되었고, 그 다음 순서로 남학생은 피자(22.3%)와 치킨(22.3%) 및 햄버거(18.5%), 여학생은 치킨(25.8%)과 도너츠(12.4%)를 더 선호하였다. 패스트푸드 만족도를 3점 척도로 조사한 결과, 맛이 가장 높은 점수(2.42)였으며, 가격(1.98), 위생(1.92) 서비스(2.15)는 보통으로 평가했다. 본 연구 결과, 조사 대상자들의 패스트푸드 섭취는 가끔 먹는 간식과 같은 형태로 당장 우려할 정도는 아니지만, 선행연구에서 보고된 바와 같이 10대와 20대에 특히 섭취율이 증가함을 감안할 때, 중학생이 되기 전 단계에서 우리음식의 우수성과 패스트푸드 섭취지양에 대한 교육이 필요하다고 본다.
