Evaluation of Travel Time Reliability using Daily Traffic Volumes (일교통량을 이용한 통행시간 신뢰도 평가)

  • This paper is to introduce methodologies of travel time reliability evaluation using daily traffic volumes. The methodologies include desirable speed concept, the relation between averaged daily speeds and daily traffic volumes, the standardized way in integration of travel time deviations obtained from continuous highway sections. The study began with traffic data collection from a freeway line with long lasting congestion. And then, provided establishment of the relation between averaged daily speeds and daily traffic volumes, and usability of Point estimate method (PEM) to integrate travel time deviations of sections. Based on the relation between averaged daily speeds and daily traffic volumes, it is identified that travel time reliability begins to decrease around LOS (Level of Service) C even before LOS D or F. It may be concluded that travel time reliability could be evaluated based on daily traffic volumes in highway sections using standardized PEM. The methodologies introduced in the paper, could be useful in practicing evaluation of travel time reliability during the works of highway operation or highway planning.

  • Weather like rain, strong wind or snowfall may make the road condition deteriorated and sometimes induce traffic accidents, which lead to severe traffic congestion, thereby travelers may change their destinations elsewhere. Although origin-destination trip information is required to analyze transportation planning in urban area, there are little researches on the relationship between weather condition and travel patterns. This paper investigates the characteristics of travel patterns on expressway in rainy days of 2006. We compare the normal travel patterns with those of rainy days by the travel distance for each vehicle type. Results show that traffic volume and travel distance have been reduced in rainy days as we expect, and also show different travel patterns for weekday and weekend.

  • The origin and destination(O-D) matrix is one of the most important elements in transportation planning process. Traditionally, transport planners survey the O-D movements in order to estimate the O-D matrix. Even though the cost of the O-D survey requires high amounts of resources, the accuracy is relatively low. Therefore, many researchers have studied the estimation of the O-D matrix for automobile from traffic counts. however, there is a little attention for the application on the transit O-D matrix estimation from traffic counts. The objective of this study is therefore the estimation of the transit O-D matrix from traffic counts using Gradient method. which is verified by the reliability analysis using a contrived small example network.

  • Understanding accurate traffic performance is crucial for ensuring efficient highway operation and providing a sustainable mobility environment. On the other hand, an immediate and precise estimation of highway traffic performance faces challenges because of infrastructure and technological constraints, data processing complexities, and limitations in using integrated big data. This paper introduces a framework for estimating traffic performance by analyzing real-time data sourced from toll collection systems and dedicated short-range communications used on highways. In particular, this study addresses the data errors arising from segmented information in data, influencing the individual travel trajectories of vehicles and establishing a more reliable Origin-Destination (OD) framework. The study revealed the necessity of trip linkage for accurate estimations when consecutive segments of individual vehicle travel within the OD occur within a 20-minute window. By linking these trip ODs, the daily average highway traffic performance for South Korea was estimated to be248,624 thousand vehicle kilometers per day. This value shows an increase of approximately 458 thousand vehicle kilometers per day compared to the 248,166 thousand vehicle kilometers per day reported in the highway operations manual. This outcome highlights the potential for supplementing previously omitted traffic performance data through the methodology proposed in this study.

  • The objective of this study is to propose methods for determining optimal representative value and the optimal size of historical data for reliable travel time forecasting. We selected values with the smallest mean of forecasting errors as the optimal representative value of travel time pattern data. The optimal size of historical data used was determined using the CVMSE(Cross Validated Mean Square Error) method. According to the results of applying the methods to point vehicle detection data of Korea Highway Corporation, the optimal representative value were analyzed to be median. Second, it was analyzed that 60 days' data is the optimal size of historical data usedfor travel time forecasting.

KTX Passenger Demand Forecast with Intervention ARIMA Model (개입 ARIMA 모형을 이용한 KTX 수요예측)

  • This study proposed the intervention ARIMA model as a way to forecast the KTX passenger demand. The second phase of the Gyeongbu high-speed rail project and the financial crisis in 2008 were analyzed in order to determine the effect of time series on the opening of a new line and economic impact. As a result, the financial crisis showed that there is no statistically significant impact, but the second phase of the Gyeongbu high-speed rail project showed that the weekday trips increased about 17,000 trips/day and the weekend trips increased about 26,000 trips/day. This study is meaningful in that the intervention explained the phenomena affecting the time series of KTX trip and analyzed the impact on intervention of time series quantitatively. The developed model can be used to forecast the outline of the overall KTX demand and to validate the KTX O/D forecasting demand.

  • 현재 우리나라에서 자동차 배출량 평가에 이용되는 주행거리를 산출하는 방법으로는 환경부에서 이용하고 있는 등록대수 및 일 평균주행거리에 기초한 방법과 통행량을 고려하는 방법(한국에너지기술연구원, 2001)이 있다. 자동차 주행거리의 지역 분포는 배출량의 공간분포와 직접적으로 연결되어 있음에도 불구하고 이 방법들에 대한 적절한 검토 없이 배출량 산출에 이용하고 있어서 이에 대한 연구가 시급하다. 이러한 배경 하에 이 연구에서는 자동차 주행거리 평가에 이용되는 두 방법을 비교하여 향후 신뢰성 있는 주행거리 평가방법 개발의 기초자료를 제공하고자 한다.   • 오랜 동안 중국에서 일하며 중국의 동물방역에 대해 많이 궁금했었다. 어떻게 보면 각종 전염성질병이 끊일 수가 없는 현실은 중국이 넓다는 것만으로도 충분히 이해가 된다. 더구나 아직도 도로가에서, 또는 식당에서 마구잡이로 도살되는 현장을 보면 이러한 질병을 쉽게 종결하지 못하게 하는 주범인지도 모르겠다. 더구나 양국인의 통행량이 갈수록 늘고 있고 특히 인접국가라는 차원에서 중국의 동물방역에 대한 법을 고찰해보는 것도 중요한 의미가 잇다는 생각에서 중국의 동물검역법을 소개한다. 이 법은 1997년 7월 3일 제8기 전국인민대표대회 상무위원회 제26차 회의에서 통과되었으며, 1997년 7월 3일 중화인민공화국주석령 제87허 선포, 1998년 1월 1일부터 시행하고 있다.
