  • This study aimed to compare changes in cognitive function, depression and ability to perform activity of daily living (ADL) in patients with dementia, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and ischemic stroke (IS) and to identify factors associated with changes in instrumental ADL. A total of 86 patients (dementia=30, MCI=32, and IS=24) were included to analyse cognitive function, depression, and basic and instrumental ADL obtained at the time of diagnosis and 1 year after baseline. Repeated measures analysis of variance and multiple linear regression were used. A significant group by time interaction was found in executive function (p=.037) and instrumental ADL (p=.023) across groups. The MCI group has little change in executive function and instrumental ADL from the baseline to 1 year after diagnosis while other two groups showed changes with the dementia group showing declines and the group of IS having improvement in these factors over time. Changes in executive function(p=.030) and basic ADL (p<.001) explained 26.9% in the variance of changes in instrumental ADL. These findings showed a different changing pattern in executive function during the first year after diagnosis of dementia, MCI, and IS which have cognitive changes as their main symptoms, probably leading to a different changing pattern in instrumental ADL. Healthcare professionals should routinely assess for executive function and instrumental ADL problems and intervene to maintain and improve these functional outcomes immediately after disease.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for the development of fall prevention programs for the elderly and for improvement of quality of life based on history of falls, chronic diseases, location, fear of falling, daily living activities, and quality of life. This study was conducted from 15th August to 17th September of 2016 on 185 elderly subjects above the age of 65 living in four centers of J city and four centers of J rural. The results of this study are as follows: There were no statistically significant differences in daily living activities, fear of falls, and quality of life regarding falls in the past. There were statistically significant differences in fear of falling and quality of life regarding chronic diseases. There were statistically significant differences in daily living activities and quality of life regarding residence. This study confirms that there were relations among daily living activities, fear of falling, and quality of life, and there was a negative correlation between fear of falling and accomplishment of daily living activities(r=-.386, p<.000). There was also a positive correlation between accomplishment of daily living activities and quality of life(r=.513, p<.000). Therefore, avoiding outings on slippery roads and creating safe environments for the elderly are important to reduce fear of falling. Additionally, a system should be developed for the elderly to acquire necessary information for daily life.

  • This study was conducted to construct and test a structural equation model of instrumental activities of daily living(IADL) in community-dwelling elderly. The model was based on ICF(International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health) model. The participants were 260 elderly who were more than 65 years old. Physical and psychological function, visual-motor integration and social activities had direct effects on IADL. That is, the better the subjective health status, the lower the depression and the less chronic illness, the better IADL. Personal factor, social support and social activities had indirect effect on IADL. This model explained 32% of the variance in IADL.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyse relationship between leisure sports' activities among older adults on activities of daily living and successful aging. For accomplish this purpose of study, the survey questionnaires were used to collect data. This study firstly set up the population as the Korean elderly who were aged over 65 and living at Seoul as of 2009, 300 persons were chosen by sampling. The numbers, used in actual analysis is leisure sports' activities participant 162, non participant 128. total 300. The statistics method utilized in this study for analyzing the collected data were ANCOVA analysis, multiple regression analysis, path analysis. Activities of daily living reliability is $\alpha$=.876 above and successful aging reliability is $\alpha$=.807 above. The conclusions of this study were as being follows. First, according to the experience of in leisure sports' activities of older adults, it was not difference between the activities of daily living. Secondly, the experience of in leisure sports' activities of older adults had positive effect on successful aging. Thirdly, more intensity of in leisure sports' activities of older adults, had positive effect on instrumental activities of daily living. Fourth, more frequency and intensity of in leisure sports' activities of older adults, had positive effect on social successful aging, more frequency and period(time) of participated in leisure sports' activities of older adults, had positive effect on psychological social successful aging. Finally, the degree of in leisure sports' activities of older adults, had direct or indirect positive effect on activities of daily living and successful aging.

  • This study purposed to examine the effect of the horticultural therapy on activities of daily living and cognitive function of demented old adults in facilities. According to the results of evaluating BADL, the ability to perform daily activities decreased from 9.71 to 9.21 in the control group, but in the experimental group, the ability to perform daily activities increased significantly(p=.009) from 10.86 before the horticultural therapy to 12.43 after the therapy. According to the results of evaluating K- MMSE, the score decreased from 10.57 to 9.07 in the control group, but the experimental group showed a significant improvement in cognitive functions from 10.43 before the horticultural therapy to 13.29 after the therapy(p=.003). As presented above, the horticultural therapy was effective in improving activities of daily living and cognitive function of demented old adults.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the cause-effect relationship between motor impairments, hand function, gross motor function and activities of daily living (ADL) in children with cerebral palsy through the analysis of structural equation modeling. For this, 105 children with cerebral palsy (between 6 and 12 years old) were assessed about muscle tone and strength, range of motion, abilities of selective motor control, hand function, gross motor function and ADL. The results of this study were follows: Firstly, there were significant correlations between motor impairments of muscle tone, muscle strength, the abilities of selective motor control and ADL (p < .05); Secondly, a good correlation between the gross motor function, hand function and ADL was found in all children (p < .05); Thirdly, the appropriateness of research model was good. This study focused on exploration of the relationship between the motor impairment, gross motor function, hand function and ADL through structural equation modeling.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of video observation training on neglect and ability to perform activities of daily living of stroke patients. Methods : Patients diagnosed with stroke were selected as subjects according to criteria to select the research targets. The additional video observation training besides OT and PT was carried out to 15 patients in an experimental group and sham therapy besides OT and PT was performed to 15 patients in a control group. Line-bisection test were conducted to compare the neglect before and after therapy intervention and FIM was conducted to compare the ability to perform the activities of daily living. Results : The result of this study that we found out that degree of neglect in an experimental group where video observation training was carried out improved neglect and the ability to perform activities of daily living. Conclusion : The video observation training the video observation training is expected to be useful in clinics.

  • The destination of this study is a convenience sample of 301 people age 65 and older to use each one elderly welfare center D, M received a structured questionnaire for one-on-one interviews with the subjects to read all the questions and questionnaire was written. The depressed group and the normal group, identify the general characteristics, the ADL, and sleep, and the difference between the two groups, and relative risk were analyzed. The results of the study are as follows: Showed depressed group compared to normal group was the low level of ability to perform daily living, sleep well, not more than the ability to perform daily living, dressing, bowel and bladder management, and complained of the difficulty to perform instrumental activities of daily living ability of grooming, more difficult to appeal to public transportation, shopping. In conclusion, elderly health promotion strategy when you want to take into account whether or not the depression of the elderly will require the development of a variety of education and physical activity programs, and suggest the need for expanded research to determine the effectiveness.
