  • The inheritance of resistance to gall mite(Eriophys macrodonis) in boxthorn cultivars was studied with plants infected in open field. Segregation of the F$_1$ generation from crosses between resistant cultivars(Japan 1 and China 1) and susceptible line(CL42-56) hits a 3 resistant : 1 susceptible ratio, and the segregation ratio was 15 : 1 in cross between Japan 1 and China 1. It is concluded that gall mite resistance seemed to be controlled by two duplicate genes(El and E2), such that E1e1E2e2 symbolize the genotypes of China 1 and Japan 1. However, F, generation from Chungyanggugiza and CL42-56 cross did not showed clear segregation pattern but continuous variation was observed against gall mite resistance when resistance was determined on the basis of the percentage of galled leaves. Results indicated that the inheritance of resistance in Chungyanggugiza may be polygenic and complex. Also, Japan 1 and China 1 has a strong potential as a source of gall mite resistance, and Chungyanggugiza showing less resistance still has a valuable source.

  • 1. The varietal difference in amylase activity of the digestive fluid of the 5th instar larvae reared on the artificial diet was investigated, using the parent commercial silkworm varieties of Japanese strain. The amylase activity was large different among silkworm varieties. The activity was strong in Hansaeng-1, Jam 115 and Jam 117, medium in Hansaeng-3, Jam 113, Jam 119, and Jam 201, weak in Jam 107, Jam 121 and Gyeongchu. The amylase of the digestive fluid of ten parent commercial silkworm varieties is possible-(ae) type, compared with +(+$\^$ae/) type of Daizo. 2. To investigate the effect of a-amylase pre-treatment of the artificial diet, larvae were fed with the diet treated by a-amylase during 4th-5th instar periods. The blood sugar content and cocoon qualities were slightly higher in the experimental larvae than those in the control, while showing the slight less body weight, amylase activity and dietary efficient.

  • This study was carried out to know the physiological characteristics related to flooding tolerance of rice plants. Peroxidase specific activities and banding pattern of peroxidase isozyme of 24 days old seedlings were analyzed after 3 days of flooding treatment in the artificial flooding tank. Peroxidase activities of japonica rice varieties which were relatively susceptible to submergence were higher in comparison to those of Tongil and indica rice varieties. And a peculier band of peroxidase isozyme which was not shown in any part of rice plant if not flooded, was appeared at the around 9 of isoelectric point in the leaf blade of japonica rice varieties when flooded.

  • Pathogenic variations of Xanthomonas campestris pv. oryzae were observed to Korean rice cultivars depending upon isolates in the same pathotype of the pathogen grouped by reactions of Japanese rice differentials. Using 201 Korean isolates of X. campestris pv oryzae 1,307 rice cultivars and promising lines were inoculated, and they were grouped into four varietal groups based on reactions. Of rice cultivars showing similar reactions to X. campestris pv. oryzae, five Korean rice cultivars Milyang 42, Hangangchalbyeo, Pungsanbyeo, Cheongcheongbyeo, and Milyang 23 were selected for classification of the pathogen into races The isolates only virulent to Milyang 23 were designated as race K1, the isolates virulent to Cheongcheongbyeo and Milyang 23 were designated as race K2, the isolates virulent to Pungsanbyeo, Cheongcheongbyeo and Milyang 23 were designated as race K3, the isolates virulent to Hangangchalbyeo, Pungsanbyeo, Cheongcheongbyeo and Milyang 23 were designated as race K4, and the isolates virulent to Milyang 42, Hangangchalbyeo, Pungsanbyeo, Cheongcheongbyeo and Milyang 23 were designated as race K5. Of 201 isolates tested, 114 isolates (56.7%) were classified as race K1, 47 isolates (23.4%) as race K2, 38 isolates (18.9%) as race K3, and 2 isolates (1.0%) as race K4. Reaction in each rice cultivar used as differentials in this test was also compared with that of rice differentials used for classification of X. campestris pv. oryzae into pathotypes in the previous work.

  • Experiments on the physiological root activity and its related characteristics of rice varieties were carried out in order to obtain some basic informations for the application of the results obtained to a rice breeding program. A significant positive correlation was found not only among the various characteristics related to conducting and ventilating systems which connects top and root of rice plant, but also between these characteristics and root activity. On the other hand, a significant difference in physiological root activity was recognized among different varieties and also between different groups of recognized 7 rice varieties differing in the their origin. It was also found that varieties with higher root activity (root activity indices) after ear formation stage tended to have more number of lower green leaves and consequently resulted in higher grain yield. Therefore, it may be possible to diagnose indirectly the root activity by examining the number of green leaves of the rice plant at later growth stage when breeders make selections of parent material for crossing or of hybrid lines in pedigree nurseries.

  • In order to classify the ecotypical and maturing groups 136 Korean local and 4 Japanese Perilla varieties were sown at Suwon on May 20, 1972, and investigations were made on days to flowering, days to maturing and growth duration. Results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. Ecotype was classified from 6 groups with combination of the long and short duration from sowing to flowering and maturing period. The classified symbols of groups were Ia, Ib, IIa, IIIa, and IIIb. I: long duration. to flowering II: medium duration to flowering III: short duration to flowering a: long duration to maturing b: short duration to maturing Korean local varieties were distributed 3 ecotypes of IIa, IIb and IIIa, however, Japanese varieties did 2 ecotypes of IIa and IIb, respectively. 2. Maturing group was classified from 3 groups with long (I), medium (II), and short (III) growth durations. Korean local varieties belong to II and III groups but Japanese varieties belong to I and II groups, respectively. 3. Three were highly significant positive correlation (0.685) between ecotypical and maturing group. Ecotype was more related with days to flowering and growth duration, however, maturing group was related with days to flowering, days for maturing, and growth duration. Korean local varieties, more distributed into ecotype than maturing group, were attributed to differences of environmental conditions and cultural practices at different provinces.

  • Four rice cultivars (two japonicas and two japonica x indica hybrids) were grown in the hydroponic medium in order to investigate the photorespiration rate and ribulose-1, 5-bisphorphate carboxylase (EC 4, 1, 1;39) activity. The results were as follows: 1. Photorespiration rate was increased by the increasing light intensity as well as photosynthesis until light saturation point. Hangangchalbyeo of a hybrid variety had higher photorespiration rate than two japonicas(Jiniubyeo and Seolakbyeo) and one hybrid(Nampungbyeo) tested at ear formation stage. 2. Ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate carborylase of hybrids were very sensitive to temperature showing lower activities at low temperature and much higher activities at high temperature than that of japonicas.

  • The fruit yield and morpholgical characters of F$_{1}$ hybrids between Capscium annuum L. 'California Wonder', four native Japanese cultivars, and three Korean F$_{1}$ cultuvars were evaluated and the results compared with parental cultivars. The F$_{1}$ hybrids obtained by crossing 'California Wonder' and native Japanese cultivars flowered 3 days earlier on average compared to parental cultivars. The yields of F$_{1}$ hydrids were higher than those of the parental cultivars, especially when one of the parents was 'California Wonder'. Also F$_{1}$ hybrid whose one parent was 'California Wonder' and 'Fushimi Amanaga' gave the highest fruit yield. The number of locules and seeds per fruit from of the 'California Wonder' hybrids whose one parent was 'California Wonder' was more than of the native Japanese cultivars. The plant height in F$_{1}$ hybrids obtained by crossing between 'California Wonder' and four native Japanese cultivars tended to be higher than that of the parental cultivars.

  • To find out the relationship between the eco-physiological characteristics and wind damage of rice leaves by typhoon 'Thelma' occurred at young panicle formation stage of rice plant, the study was carried out. The rate of dead leaves by wind damage in Indica X Japonica varieties were higher than that in Jap. varieties. Ind. X Jap. varieties which had erect and broader leaves had the higher number of silicified cell, moisture loss and stomatal aperture in leaves. And the wind damage were positvely correlated with the characteristics such as the number of silicified cell (r=0.7546$\^$*/), rate of moisture loss (r=0.8343$\^$**/) and stomatal aperture (r=0.8460$\^$**/) of rice leaf blade etc.
