A Study on the Effects on Low Cycle Fatigue Life of a High Pressure Turbine Nozzle due to the Perturbation of Crystal Orientation of Grain of DS Materials (일방향 응고 재료의 결정립 성장 방향 섭동이 고압터빈 노즐 저주기 피로 수명에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구)

  • High pressure components of a gas turbine engine are generally made of nickel-base superalloys, using precision casting process due to complicated geometries with intricate channels and cooling holes. Turbine components manufactured from directionally solidified and single crystal materials have columnar grains; however, it is found that the crystals do not grow in its preferred direction, although the orientation can be controlled. This anisotropy can lead to the variations of elastic and Hill's parameters in constitutive equations, and they alter stress distributions and the low cycle fatigue life. We aims to evaluate the effects of perturbed crystal orientations on the structural integrity of a directionally solidified nozzle using low cycle fatigue life. We also attempt to show the necessity for the control of allowed manufacturing errors and stochastic analysis. Our approaches included conjugate heat transfer and structural analysis, along with low cycle fatigue life assessment.

Uniform Crystal Growth during Directional Solidification of Hypermonotectic Alloys (과편정 합금의 일방향 응고시 균일한 결정 성장)

  • Liquid-liquid phase separation due to the very different density and composition occurs when the hypermonotectic alloys are solidified on the ground. Besides this, other factors such as preferential wetting and coalescence make it difficult to get uniform microstructures during the directional solidification of hypermonotectic alloys. Therefore a few novel solidification methods to get rid of such a nonuniformity have been reviewed and the recent experimental work using ultrasonic energy in conjunction with directional solidification has been presented. The uniformly solidified structures have been obtained when the ultrasonic of 20kHz applied to transparent organic system, Succinonitrile-Glycerol, varying ultrasonic amplitude and composition etc.

  • The effect of solidification condition and vibration on structure refinement was investigatedfor unidirectionally solidified $AI-CuAI_{2}$ eutectic composites. Eutectic composites were unidirectionally solidifiedunder vibration with variation of growth rates (R) and thermal gradient((G), $32^{\circ}C$/cm, and 35$^{\circ}C$/cm. The lamellar structure was varied according to growth condition(G/R ratio). For the structure refinementthe effect of G/R was found out to be greater rather than that of vibration.   • Homogeneous liquids of Ni-21.5Nb-2.5Al and Ni-23.3Nb eutectic superalloys were solidified into Ni/$Ni_3$Al-$Ni_3$Nb(${\gamma}$/${\gamma}$'-${\delta}$)and Ni-Ni/$Ni_3$Nb(${\gamma}$-${\delta}$) phase by directional solidification and the effect of interlamellar spacing on microsturctural stability at high temperatures, hardness variation with growth rate was studied. The interlamellar spacing(${\lambda}$) in the eutectics was varied with the growth rate(R), corresponding to "${\lambda}^2$R =Constant" relationship. Isothermal heat treatments of the eutectics used in this study, provided the microstructural stability improvement at hight temperature as the interlamellar spacing increases. It was also seen that the hardness improvement is made with the growth raterowth rate

방향성 다공질금속의 제조 및 기계적성질

  • 금속을 용해 응고시킬 때 생성되는 소위, 주조 결함이나 소결금속 내의 기공은 재료의 성능이나강도를 현저하게 낮추는 결함으로서 예전부터 기피되어 왔다. 또한, 재료공정에있어서도 여하의 기공이나 기포가 없는 치밀한 고강도 및 고기능성 재료를 개발하는 것에 최대한의 주의와 관심을 기울여 왔다. 그렇지만, 우리가 자연계의 천연물이나 인공물을 둘러보면 그 대부분이다공질임을 쉽게 눈치챌 수 있다. 예를 들어 목재, 지엽등의 생물을 시작해서 콘크리트 등의 인공물, 우리 체내의 뼈도 전형적인 다공질구조로 구성되어 있다. 이러한 구조로부터 재료의 재질제어 이외에 구조제어라는 새로운 어프로치를 고려할 수 있고, 최근 들어, 금속재료에 있어서도 이러한 다공질구조에 관한 연구가활성화되어 충격흡수재, 생체재료, 베어링재료 등의 다양한응용이 전개되고 있다. 특히, 원주상의 방향성 기공을 갖는 로터스금속은 기존의 복잡한구조의 다공질금속보다 뛰어난 기계적 성질을 갖는다. 이러한 다공질금속은 일방향응고할 때 생성하는 과포화가스원자를 석출시켜 기공을 일방향으로 성장시킨다. 즉, 융점에서의 고상과 액상의 가스 용해도 차를 이용하는 것으로서 응고시에 고용할 수 없는 가스원자가 기공을 형성한다. 이와같이 제조한 방향성 다공질금속은 BT (인플란트, 생체적합성, 저탄성, 경량), ST (초음속기엔진부품, 경량), IT (고성능수냉모듈), ET(고온촉매, 필터)의 분야로의 응용이 기대된다. 본 강연에서는 방향성 다공질금속의 제조법, 특성 및 응용을 포함하여그 동안의 연구성과 및 앞으로의 과제 등을 소개하고자 한다.

  • The preparation of n-type thermoelectric material of Bi₂ Te/sub 2.55/Se/sub 0.45/ doped with CuBr₂ was carried out using a vertical gradient freezing method. With this method, unidirectional solidified Bi₂Te/sub 2.55/Se/sub 0.45/ has been obtained. XRD analysis demonstrated that Bi₂/sub 2.55/Se/sub 0.45/ 5 ingot has grown with prefer orientation of (0 1 5) face. Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity were measured as functions of temperature in the range of 373 K to 523 K on the sample which prepared via VGF method.

  • The effects of solidification condition and vibration on structure refinement were investigated for unidirectionally solidified $Al-CuAl_2$ eutectic composites. Solidification and Segregation Behaviors with Solidification Rate in Co base superalloy, FSX-414 (일방향 응고된 Co기 초내열합금 FSX-414의 응고속도에 따른 응고조직 및 편석 거동)

  • Co base superalloys have been widely used for the parts of gas turbine due to their excellent strength, thermal fatigue, oxidation resistance and weldability at high temperature. In this study, directional solidifications were carried out at various solidification rates, including $0.5{\sim}300{\mu}m/s$ in the Co base superalloy FSX-414. The cellular interface were formed at a low solidification rate, $1{\mu}m/s$, and the dendritic interface was found at higher solidification rates, $5{\sim}300{\mu}m/s$. As the spacing of dendrite structure decreased, the size and spacing of eutectics decreased. Dendrite arm spacing decreased with increasing solidification rates and temperature gradient. It was interesting to find the $M_{23}C_{6}$ eutectic microstructure formed between $\gamma$ dendrites. Composition analysis showed that Cr and W were segregated severely between the dendrites, which resulted in the formation of Cr-rich $M_{23}C_{6}$ and W-rich MC carbides.

Estimation of Liquid Physical Properties of Mar-M247LC Superalloy by Directional Solidification (일방향 응고법을 이용한 Mar M-247LC 초내열합금의 액상 물성 측정)

  • Directional solidification experiments have been carried out at the solidification rates from 0.5 to 50$\mu\textrm{m}$/s in Mar M-247LC superalloy in which several important liquid properties were estimated by analyzing the interface stability and temperature gradient at the solid/liquid interface. The diffusion coefficient in the liquid was estimated by employing the constitutional supercooling criterion. The temperature gradients changed with solidification rates and latent heat of solidification. The thermal conductivities of solid and liquid could be estimated by heat flux balance at the solid liquid interface.
