Many researches have been conducted to evaluate the performance of modified asphalt concrete mixtures. The research was conducted to estimate the laboratory mechanical characteristics of Elvaloy-modified asphalt concrete mixture. To achieve its intended objective, indirect tensile test and resilient modulus test were performed. The rest results revealed that indirect tensile strengths and resilient moduli of the Elvaloy-modified asphalt concrete mixture were higher than those of the conventional dense-graded. As a result, within the limits of the tests conducted in this research, it is predicted that the performance and stability of the Elvaloy-modified asphalt concrete mixture are better than that of the conventional dense-graded one.
This study presents the test results on the compaction characteristics of warm mix asphalt mixtures that include the additive in 3 different mixtures(hot mix asphalt, SBS and SMA). The tests were conducted to find out the compaction characteristics on the compactability with varying compaction time, different amount of the warm mix additive and lowering the compaction temperature. The Superpave gyratory compactor was used to find out the variation of the density when the number of the gyration is varied. A dense mixture and 3 different warm mix additives were employed to find the relationship between compactability and compaction time. The comparison of the compactability with lowering the temperature was conducted using dense mixture, SBS polymer modified mixture and stone matrix asphalt mixture(SMA). The difference of the density of warm mix asphalt mixtures was not found due to the lowering of compaction temperature when it was compared with the standard mixture and the warm mix showed the stable condition in density. In the mean time, depending upon the different warm mix additive and mixture, the difference of density and the variation trend of compaction is found to be existed and shows the relationship between these two variables.

A major purpose of this study is to develop high modulus asphalt mixtures for perpetual asphalt pavements which can save maintenance cost by increasing the design and performance periods of the pavements. Various physical and mechanical laboratory tests are performed for the high modulus asphalt binder developed in this study. The test results show that the properties of the high modulus binder are similar to those of the French high modulus binders. In addition to the binder tests, various performance tests are conducted for the high modulus and conventional mixtures. The dynamic modulus test results indicate that the dynamic modulus values of the high modulus mixtures are higher than those of the conventional mixtures by 10~15% at $5^{\circ}C$, 20~25% at $15^{\circ}C$ and 100% at $30^{\circ}C$. It is observed from the performance tests that the high modulus mixtures yield better fatigue, rutting and moisture damage performance than the conventional mixtures.
Purpose: This paper aims to develop an asphalt pavement system with reduced cracks, structural stability and waterproofing at sub-zero temperature conditions. Method: Under various temperature conditions, SIS polymer asphalt, normal asphalt, and guss asphalt were tested for adhesion strength of the binder and deformation strength of the mixture. Result: The adhesion strength of asphalt binder was higher in SIS polymer asphalt than that of normal asphalt and guss asphalt. The deformation strength of the asphalt mixture was almost the same as that of SIS polymer asphalt and normal asphalt. The energy absorption of the SIS polymer asphalt mixture was relatively higher than that of the normal asphalt mixture and the guss asphalt mixture. Conclusion: The maximum load of the SIS polymer asphalt mixture was lower than that of the guss asphalt mixture. However, in sub-zero temperature conditions, sufficient energy absorption was secured by stable load reduction. Therefore, it is expected to improve the durability of asphalt pavement by reducing the occurrence of microcracks with stable fracture behavior.
Warm-mix asphalt(WMA) technology has been developed to allow asphalt mixtures to be produced and compacted at a significantly lower temperature. The WMA technology was identified as one of means to lower emissions for $CO_2$ and has been spread so quickly in the world. Recently, two innovative WMA additives has been developed to reduce mixing and paving temperatures applied in asphalt paving process in Korea. Since the first public demonstration project in 2008, many WMA projects have successfully been constructed in national highways. In 2010, the WMA field trial was conducted on new national highway construction under Dae-Jeon Regional Construction Management Administration. The two different WMA loose mixtures(WMA and WMA-P) and a HMA mixture were collected at the asphalt plant to evaluate their mechanical performance in the laboratory. The Third-scale Model Mobile Loading Simulator(MMLS3) was adopted to evaluate rutting resistance and moisture damage under different traffic and environmental conditions. In this study, plant-produced WMA mixtures using two WMA additives along with the conventional hot mix asphalt(HMA) mixtures were evaluated with respect to their rutting resistance and moisture susceptibility using MMLS3. Based on the limited laboratory test results, plant-produced WMA mixtures are superior to HMA mixtures in rutting resistance and the moisture susceptibility. The WMA additive was effective for producing and compacting the mixture at $30^{\circ}C$ lower than the temperature for the HMA mixture.
The polymers, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and styrene-butadiene-styrene(SBS) -modified asphalt mixtures are advanced asphalt pavement materials in which $3{\sim}6%$ of them, and/or some other additive, by weight of total binder are added. The purpose of modifying asphalt material is to improve typical weakness such as rutting and cracking resistance of normal asphalt mixtures. These materials have been proved to show many advantages and practical applicability in the plant and field. Wet processed PMA binder and/or dry processed asphalt mixtures are developed as field products for many years. The objective of this paper is to show the characteristics of the LDPE and SBS-modified asphalt mixtures by comprehensive evaluation and comparison with those of normal asphalt mixtures.
Warm-Mix Asphalt(WMA) mixtures, which meet environmental protection and have high energy efficiency, are emerging as an alternative to hot-mix asphalt mixtures. The objective of this study is to evaluate WMA made with Aspha-min in the laboratory and to compare the design results accomplished by new Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide(MEPDG) with control mixture. An asphalt mixture with a nominal maximum size of 12.5mm and PG64-28 binder was used. Resilient modulus tests for a control mixture and WMA with 0.3% and 0.5% of Aspha-min were conducted. The results obtained by MEPDG after inputting the test output into the design indicated that the predicted rut depth of WMA using Aspha-min was much lower than that of control mixture, and showed that WMA was more resistant to rutting than control mixture.

This study evaluated the performance of Korean epoxy asphalt mixtures using several laboratory tests. Four types of epoxy asphalt mixtures were manufactured based on 13mm dense graded asphalt mixtures: three Korean and one Japanese epoxy asphalt mixtures where 20% or 40% of asphalt binder was replaced by epoxy resins. Curing time was determined as 3 and 6 hours for the mixtures containing 40% and 20% of epoxy resins, respectively. From the laboratory tests including wheel tracking, indirect tension fatigue, bending beam, and moisture susceptibility tests, it was concluded that the epoxy asphalt mixtures had superior performance than conventional asphalt mixtures except moisture susceptibility. Also, the performance of the Korean epoxy asphalt mixtures was comparable to the Japanese mixtures. Thermal coefficient, bond strength, and indirect tension tests were conducted to examine the applicability of the Korean epoxy asphalt mixtures to concrete repair. Its adhesion was strong enough to be bonded to surrounding concrete materials and its tensile strength was comparable to the concrete, but thermal expansion coefficient was 5 times greater than the surrounding concrete.
Moisture damage of asphalt mixtures can occur because of a loss of bond between the asphalt binder and the fine and coarse aggregates. Therefore, moisture damage on asphalt pavements is the main cause of potholes, which is one of the main distress type of asphalt pavement. The purpose of this study is to evaluation effect moisture damage on material properties of asphalt mixtures through the laboratory performance test. The existing Modified Lottman test procedure was improved and the number of times that thermal cyclic conditioning can be added until the asphalt mixtures is damaged, was tested in order to exhibit the changes of the material properties because of moisture damage by immersion. Through the above experiments, it was found that the material properties of asphalt mixtures on room-temperature were rapidly decreased with loss of about 50% at initial stage of moisture damage caused by the amount of repeated immersion. Also, it was found that the property damage ratio using material properties of failure energy and $DCSE_f$ by test temperature $25^{\circ}C$ were showed a high relationship to moisture damage of the asphalt mixtures caused by the amount of repeated immersion.

Basalt powder sludge (abbreviated BPS) is an inevitable industry by product resulted from the stone processing. Recently, demands for natural materials have been increasing in the construction and landscaping fields, therefore, amounts of BPS have been also increasing. Since most of BPS are used as landfill and earth soil, it is necessary to figure out to expedite their utilization. In this study, by considering the characteristics of precipitation of Jeju, effectiveness of BPS as a filler for asphalt compounds mixed with cement were analyzed. As a result, BPS satisfies quality criterion required in KS F 3501. Marshall mixing designs were performed to determine the optimal asphalt content for the Modified recycling asphalt mixture (27% recycling aggregate) and the Normal asphalt mixture. Effectiveness of BPS were identified by the Marshall Stability Test with the mixing ratio (level 3) of two asphalt compounds and composition ration (level 3) of BPS and cement. Performance of asphalt compounds shown appropriate effect of mixing and composition ratios of the filler were assessed. Test results show that two types of asphalt compounds satisfy the quality standards of the MLIT (2015). Therefore, BPS could be used as filler for asphalt compounds.
