  • In this paper, we propose a hydrodynamic scene separation method for wave propagation from video imagery using autoencoder. In the coastal area, image analysis methods such as particle tracking and optical flow with video imagery are usually applied to measure ocean waves owing to some difficulties of direct wave observation using sensors. However, external factors such as ambient light and weather conditions considerably hamper accurate wave analysis in coastal video imagery. The proposed method extracts hydrodynamic scenes by separating only the wave motions through minimizing the effect of ambient light during wave propagation. We have visually confirmed that the separation of hydrodynamic scenes is reasonably well extracted from the ambient light and backgrounds in the two videos datasets acquired from real beach and wave flume experiments. In addition, the latent representation of the original video imagery obtained through the latent representation learning by the variational autoencoder was dominantly determined by ambient light and backgrounds, while the hydrodynamic scenes of wave propagation independently expressed well regardless of the external factors.

  • Researches of face recognition on masked faces have been increasingly important due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To realize a stable and practical recognition performance, large amount of facial image data should be acquired for the purpose of training. However, it is difficult for the researchers to obtain masked face images for each human subject. This paper proposes a novel method to synthesize a face image and a virtual mask pattern. In this method, a pair of masked face image and unmasked face image, that are from a single human subject, is fed into a convolutional autoencoder as training data. This allows learning the geometric relationship between face and mask. In the inference step, for a unseen face image, the learned convolutional autoencoder generates a synthetic face image with a mask pattern. The proposed method is able to rapidly generate realistic masked face images. Also, it could be practical when compared to methods which rely on facial feature point detection.

  • A two-dimensional optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) encoder/decoder, which is composed of add/drop filters and all-pass filters for delay operation, is proposed. An example design is presented, and its feasibility is illustrated through numerical simulations. The chip area of the proposed OCDMA encoder/decoder could be about one-third that of a previous OCDMA device employing delay waveguides. Its performance is numerically investigated using the transfer-matrix method combined with the fast Fourier transform. The autocorrelation peak level over the maximum cross-correlation level for incorrect wavelength hopping and spectral phase code combinations is greater than 3 at the center of the correctly decoded pulse, which assures a bit error rate lower than 10-3, corresponding to the forward error-correction limit.

  • This paper proposes an approach to detect abnormal data in automotive controller area network (CAN) using an unsupervised learning model, i.e. autoencoder and Gaussian kernel density estimation function. The proposed autoencoder model is trained with only message ID of CAN data frames. Afterwards, by employing the Gaussian kernel density estimation function, it effectively detects abnormal data based on the trained model characterized by the optimally determined number of frames and a loss threshold. It was verified and evaluated using four types of attack data, i.e. DoS attacks, gear spoofing attacks, RPM spoofing attacks, and fuzzy attacks. Compared with conventional unsupervised learning-based models, it has achieved over 99% detection performance across all evaluation metrics.

  • Artificial intelligence models are being used to detect facility anomalies using physics data such as vibration, current, and temperature for predictive maintenance in the manufacturing industry. Since the types of facility anomalies, such as facility defects and failures, anomaly detection methods using autoencoder-based unsupervised learning models have been mainly applied. Normal or abnormal facility conditions can be effectively classified using the reconstruction error of the autoencoder, but there is a limit to identifying facility anomalies specifically. When facility anomalies such as unbalance, misalignment, and looseness occur, the facility vibration frequency shows a pattern different from the normal state in a specific frequency range. This paper presents an N-segmentation anomaly detection method that performs anomaly detection by dividing the entire vibration frequency range into N regions. Experiments on nine kinds of anomaly data with different frequencies and amplitudes using vibration data from a compressor showed better performance when N-segmentation was applied. The proposed method helps materialize them after detecting facility anomalies.

  • Large-scale fires and their consequential damages are becoming increasingly common, but confidence in fire detection systems is waning. Recently, widely-used chemical fire detectors frequently generate lots of false alarms, while video-based deep learning fire detection is hampered by its time-consuming and expensive nature. To tackle these issues, this study proposes a fire detection model utilizing an autoencoder approach. The objective is to minimize false alarms while achieving swift and precise fire detection. The proposed model, employing an autoencoder methodology, can exclusively learn from normal data without the need for fire-related data, thus enhancing its adaptability to diverse environments. By amalgamating data from five distinct sensors, it facilitates rapid and accurate fire detection. Through experiments with various hyperparameter combinations, the proposed model demonstrated that out of 14 scenarios, only one encountered false alarm issues. Experimental results underscore its potential to curtail fire-related losses and bolster the reliability of fire detection systems.

  • The sixth generation(6G) wireless communication technology is advancing toward ultra-high speed, ultra-high bandwidth, and hyper-connectivity. With the development of communication technologies, the formation of a hyper-connected society is rapidly accelerating, expanding from the IoT(Internet of Things) to the IoE(Internet of Everything). However, at the same time, security threats targeting IoT devices have become widespread, and there are concerns about security incidents such as unauthorized access and information leakage. As a result, the need for security-enhancing solutions is increasing. In this paper, we implement an autoencoder-based anomaly detection model utilizing real-time collected network traffics in respond to IoT security threats. Considering the difficulty of capturing IoT device traffic data for each attack in real IoT environments, we use an unsupervised learning-based autoencoder and implement 6 different autoencoder models based on the use of noise in the training data and the dimensions of the latent space. By comparing the model performance through experiments, we provide a performance evaluation of the anomaly detection model for detecting abnormal network traffic.

  • Outlier detection research in ocean data has traditionally been performed using statistical and distance-based machine learning algorithms. Recently, AI-based methods have received a lot of attention and so-called supervised learning methods that require classification information for data are mainly used. This supervised learning method requires a lot of time and costs because classification information (label) must be manually designated for all data required for learning. In this study, an autoencoder based on unsupervised learning was applied as an outlier detection to overcome this problem. For the experiment, two experiments were designed: one is univariate learning, in which only SST data was used among the observation data of Deokjeok Island and the other is multivariate learning, in which SST, air temperature, wind direction, wind speed, air pressure, and humidity were used. Period of data is 25 years from 1996 to 2020, and a pre-processing considering the characteristics of ocean data was applied to the data. An outlier detection of actual SST data was tried with a learned univariate and multivariate autoencoder. We tried to detect outliers in real SST data using trained univariate and multivariate autoencoders. To compare model performance, various outlier detection methods were applied to synthetic data with artificially inserted errors. As a result of quantitatively evaluating the performance of these methods, the multivariate/univariate accuracy was about 96%/91%, respectively, indicating that the multivariate autoencoder had better outlier detection performance. Outlier detection using an unsupervised learning-based autoencoder is expected to be used in various ways in that it can reduce subjective classification errors and cost and time required for data labeling.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation for spread spectrum FTS encoder and decoder. The FTS command format is defined by 64 bit encrypted packet that contains all required information relayed between the ground and the vehicle. Encryption is accomplished using the Tripple-DES encryption algorithm in block encryption form. The proposed FTS encoder and decoder is using the Convolution Encoding and Viterbi Decoding for forward error correction. The Spread Spectrum Modulation is done using a PN code, which is 256 bit gold code. The simulation result shows that the designed FTS decoder is compatible with the designed FTS encoder.

  • In this paper, we propose a fixed-complexity sphere encoder (FSE) for multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) systems. The Proposed FSE accomplishes a scalable tradeoff between performance and complexity. Also, because it has a parallel tree-search structure, the proposed encoder can be easily pipelined, leading to a tremendous reduction in the precoding latency. The complexity of the proposed encoder is also analyzed, and we propose two techniques that reduce it. Simulation and analytical results demonstrate that in a $4\times4$ MU-MIMO system, the complexity of the proposed FSE is 16% that of the conventional QRD-M encoder (QRDM-E). Also, the encoding throughput of the proposed endoder is 7.5 times that of the QRDM-E with tolerable degradation in the BER performance, while achieving the optimum diversity order.
