Since the domestic introduction of iPhone in 2009, use of smartphones rapidly increased and many tasks, previously performed by various devices, are now performed by smartphones. In this process the importance of reading little text using small smartphone screen has become highly significant. This research tested how display factors of smartphone (pixel density, sub-pixel structure, luminance) and environmental factor (illumination) affect legibility related discomfort in text reading. The results indicated that legibility related discomfort is largely affected by pixel density, where people experience inconvenience when the pixel density becomes lower than 300 PPI. Illumination has limited effect on legibility related discomfort. Participants reported more legibility related discomfort when stimulus presented in various levels of illumination rather than single illumination level. Sub-pixel structure and luminance did not affected legibility related discomfort. Based on the results we suggest lower limit resolution of smart devices (smartphones, tablet computers) of different sizes for text legibility.

Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) differ fundamentally, with AR overlaying computer-generated information onto the real world in a nonimmersive way. Despite extensive research on cybersickness in VR, its occurrence in AR has received less attention (Vovk et al., 2018). This study examines cybersickness and discomfort associated with AR usage, focusing on the impact of content intensity and exposure time. Participants viewed 30-minute racing simulation game clips through AR equipment, varying in racing speed to alter content intensity. Cybersickness was assessed subjectively using the Simulator sickness questionnaire (SSQ; Kennedy et al., 1993). Findings revealed a progressive increase in cybersickness with longer exposure, persisting even after removing the AR equipment. Contrarily, content intensity did not significantly influence cybersickness levels. Analysis of the SSQ subscales revealed higher oculomotor (O) scores compared to nausea (N) and disorientation (D), suggesting that discomfort primarily stemmed from oculomotor strain. The study highlights distinct differences in user experience between AR and VR, specifically in subjective responses.
The purpose of this study was to investigate association between oral health related quality of life(OHRQoL) and health outcome, such as evaluated oral health state, perceived health state and perceived oral health state. 148 of individuals over 50 years old completed a self-reported questionnaire on Oral Health Impact Profile(OHIP-14) and oral examination was perfomed. 9.5% of respondents reported no problems or discomfort using OHIP-14. The most frequently reported problems were physical pain(69.8%) and psychological discomfort(63.5%). 43.9% of the individuals rated their health and oral health as poor and 54.7% were dissatisfied with their oral health. The study showed association between number of DMFT, missing teeth, perceived health state, perceived oral health state, oral health satisfaction and oral health related quality of life. Perceived heath sate was correlated with oral health related quality of life. But the study showed no association between DMFT, number of missing teeth and oral health related quality of life.
As BIM(Building Information Modeling) is widely used in the construction process the need for exploring building models realistically is also growing. In this paper, we present a 3D stereoscopic navigation method for virtual buildings considering virtual perception. We first find out factors that may cause virtual discomfort while navigating stereoscopic building models, and then develop a method for automatically adjusting the range of virtual camera separation. In addition, we measure each user's JND(Just Noticeable Difference) in depth to adjust virtual camera separation and movement. The presented method can be used for various architectural applications by creating user-customized 3D stereoscopic contents.
Do animals have a mind? Our understanding about whether animals have minds depends on our relationship with animals, as we cannot determine animals' actual minds. These two studies presented here thus examined the meat paradox, that is, an inconsistency between love for animals and the act of enjoying eating meat in the context of mind perception. Study 1 examined whether mind perceptions toward various animals are classified on the basis of experience-related capacities, such as feeling pain, and agency-related capacities, such as having self-control. In Study 2, mind perceptions toward cows and sexually objectified women were classified on the basis of food condition and non-food condition. In the food condition (experimental condition), cows were portrayed as products for meat consumption, whereas in the control condition, they were described as animals living on a farm, eating grass. The results of Study 2 demonstrated revealed that mind perception was positively associated with how morally incorrect it was to eat animals. Study 2 thus demonstrated that the scores of mind perception toward cows and sexually objectified women in the experimental condition were significantly lower than those in the control condition. These reduced mind attribution in the experimental condition implied that people may be motivated to reduce cognitive dissonance between their attitudes toward animals, such as loving them, and their behaviors, such as, eating meat. In addition, these results suggest that objectification toward animals may impact the objectification and mind perception toward human beings as well. These findings highlight the role of dissonance reduction in the meat paradox and objectification theory so as to understand basic psychological processes involved while making moral choices in everyday life.
The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of chewing ability on cognitive function of older people in Korea and the mediation effect of physical function and depression using the nationwide data from "Survey of the Living Conditions and Welfare Needs of Korean Older Persons in 2014", in Korea. This study was conducted on a total of 10,451 respondents in the "Survey of the Living Conditions and Welfare Needs of Korean Older Persons in 2014" and the data collection period was from June 11, to September 4, 2014. Chewing ability was used in the scale on level of daily life inconvenience in chewing ability (meat or hardness). Cognitive function was measured using MMSE-DS, physical function using K-IADL, and depression using SGDS-K. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 24.0 program and Process Macro. Total effects of chewing ability on cognitive function were not significant(p>.05). Direct effects of chewing ability on cognitive function were not significant(p>.05). There were the dual mediation effect(p<.05) of physical function and depression, a complete mediating effect by physical function(p<.05) or depression(p<.05) in the impact of chewing ability on cognitive function of older people in Korea. These results indicate that physical function and depression effect directly and indirectly in the impact of chewing ability on cognitive function of older people. In conclusion, it is suggested that to prevent the decline of cognitive function in older people, it is necessary to consider not only nursing strategies for strengthening chewing ability and physical function, but also nursing interventions for relieving or preventing depression in older people.
The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of resistance training on joint flexibility and muscle strength of upper extremities of institutionalized elderly with impaired cognition. The study design was pretest-posttest control group study and inclusion criteria were elderly aged 65-year older, MMSE score 23 or less, ones who had no serious physical and/or mental problem except impaired cognition, and were capable to carry out resistance training. After consents were obtained participants were randomly assigned. Pre-post evaluation was performed by staff nurses trained beforehand. Among those 4-week study period, experiment was carried out during 5 consecutive days a week for 3 weeks. ROM and extension range of shoulder joints and muscle strength of shoulders and hands for both sides were measured. Flexion, extension, abduction range of right shoulder joint was significantly improved. Flexion and extension muscle strength of left side shoulder and abduction muscle strength of both sides of shoulder were significantly improved. With the study result, it could be concluded that resistance training has therapeutic effects on joint flexibility and muscle strength. More studies adopted longer experimental period to evaluate timing of effect and extinction to refine the protocol are called for.

Users can experience cybersickness when interacting with virtual reality (VR). The symptoms of cybersickness are similar to those of motion sickness which include eye fatigue, disorientation, and nausea. Despite the longstanding interest of user's discomfort, inconsistent results have been drawn on the underlying mechanisms and solutions of cybersickness. In this study, we propose an integrated view of cybersickness connecting causes of the symptoms, human perception model, and measurements of cybersickness. Cybersickness-related factors of previous research are reorganized into content, hardware, and human factors as well as analyzed in terms of VR fidelity. Also, pros and cons that measure the degree of cybersickness are discussed.
Purpose : This investigation was to identify the relationship of social support, stress, health and quality of life in caregivers of home-stay cancer patient. Method : We used a questionnaire and obtained data from the records of 79 caregivers of home-stay cancer patient in a community. Window SPSS-PC was used for the data analysis and the statistical method used were the t-test, ANOVA and Pearson's correlation coefficient.
