An Analysis of Earth Science Vocabularies Used in the 10th Grade Science Textbooks (10학년 과학 교과서 지구과학 용어 분석)

  • The purposes of this study were to analyze the level of Earth science vocabularies in the 10th grade textbooks with the Science Word Analysis (SWA) program and to investigate the vocabularies selected by the 10th grade students as difficult ones. For this purpose, we extracted the Earth science vocabularies from eleven textbooks, and classified into scientific and non-scientific vocabularies with the SWA program based on the standard Korean language dictionary. In addition, we investigated the difficulty of each vocabulary by surveying five hundred sixty students with a questionnaire. Results showed that the frequency of the scientific vocabularies that were beyond the designated level was the largest among any other levels in all textbooks. Most of the vocabularies selected by students as difficult ones to understand were classified into out of the level. From these results, it were suggested that the students' cognitive level should be considered when developing science textbooks and difficult vocabularies should be replaced with easy ones without a change of meaning.

  • Now, one of the greatest concerns at home and abroad is eco-friendly construction. Above all, the reduce and recycle of the construction waste may be one of the most important things. The construction waste has been produced most at demolition phase, but the research into that area has not being to make nearly within the country. Recently, as the government have realized the importance of that area, they are making research to improve traditional demolition methods. Also, they are preparing to make a raw to enforce deconstruction during demolition phase. This research has analyzed the problems and waste types which produced during the demolition works by surveying in site. Until now, in the interior, the right quantity basis has not been suggested, because of the absence of any methods to estimate it accurately. Therefore, this study has compared and analyzed owner's ordering quantity, drawing analysis quantity with measuring the waste to produced at site during demolition works, this research results are expected to be the important materials for future research into the construction waste area.

  • To alleviate positioning error using wireless ultra-wideband (UWB) is primary concern, and it has been studied how to reduce the positioning error effectively. Thanks to many repeated transmissions of UWB signals, we can have a variety of selections to point out the most precise positioning result. Towards this, scanning method has been preferred to be used due to its simplicity. This exhaustive method firstly fixes the candidate position, and calculates the sum of distances from observed positions. However, it has tremendous number of computations, and the complexity is more serious if the size of two-dimensional range is the larger. To mitigate the large number of computations, this paper proposes the technique employing genetic algorithm and block windowing. To exploit its superiority, simulations will be conducted to show the reduction of complexity, and the efficiency on positioning capability.

  • This paper addresses an adaptive postprocessing method applied in the spatial domain for block-based discrete cosine transform (BDCT) coded images. The proposed algorithm is designed by a serial concatenation of a 1D simple smoothing filter and a 2D directional filter. The 1D smoothing filter is applied according to the block type, which is determined by an adaptive threshold. It depends on local statistical properties, and updates block types appropriately by a simple rule, which affects the performance of deblocking processes. In addition, the 2D directional filter is introduced to suppress the ringing effects at the sharp edges and the block discontinuities while preserving true edges and textural information. Comprehensive experiments indicate that the proposed algorithm outperforms many deblocking methods in the literature, in terms of PSNR and subjective visual quality evaluated by GBIM.

The exploration of the effects of word frequency and word length on Korean word recognition (한국어 단어재인에 있어서 빈도와 길이 효과 탐색)

  • Because a word is the basic unit of language processing, studies of the word recognition processing and the variables that contribute to word recognition processing are very important. Word frequency and word length are recognized as important factors on word recognition. This study examined the effects of those two variables on the Korean word recognition processing. In Experiment 1, two types of Hangul words, pure Hangul words and Hangul words with Hanja counterparts, were used to explore the frequency effects. A frequency effect was not observed for Hangul words with Hanja counterparts. In Experiment 2, the word length was manipulated to determine if the word length effect appears in Hangul words. Contrary to the expectation, one syllable words were processed more slowly than two syllable words. The possible explanations for these results and future research directions are discussed.

  • In this paper, the initial value problem in clustering using K-means or Fuzzy-c-means is considered to reduce the number of iterations. Conventionally the initial values in clustering using K-means or Fuzzy-c-means are chosen randomly, which sometimes brings the results that the process of clustering converges to undesired center points. The choice of intial value has been one of the well-known subjects to be solved. The system of clustering using K-means or Fuzzy-c-means is sensitive to the choice of intial values. As an approach to the problem, the uniform partitioning method is employed to extract the optimal initial point for each clustering of data. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method, which reduces the number of iterations for the central points of clustering groups.

A Study on the Oral Health Knowledge of Disability Welfare Facilities Teachers in Gimhae (김해시 장애인 복지시설 교사의 구강보건지식도 조사)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the extent to which the teachers in disability welfare facilities are acquainted with the oral health knowledge. It was compiled by means of the self-administered questionnaire held out by 119 teachers in Gimhae and it conducted in August of 2010. Considered the score of 100 as all the precise answers, the total average score was 46.4(${\pm}18.0$). Moreover, the heterogeneity of the oral health knowledge among the respondents was revealed that it statistically does not have anything to do with the demographic characteristics. In conclusion, it is urgently required to develop the oral health education in forms of the continuing education, the online education, and the materials of the regular university curriculum - all for the teachers of the disability welfare facilities in Korea.

Classification and Performance Evaluation of Reputation-Based Trust Model in Ad-hoc Networks (애드혹 환경에서 평판기반 신뢰 모델의 분류 및 성능평가)

  • In trust-based networks, it is very important how to decide a node is trustworthy when one node performs communications with other node. In current networks based on trust, a node creates a new trust value from observation and then establishes an intercommunication path through the process of evaluating a targeted communication node. In our paper, we propose four trust models in which a new node enters a cluster and finds a target node to create a communication in ad-hoc networks. The proposed models have been classified according to the existence of reputation server and the trust evaluation functions. Through the proposed model, we found that new node finds target node more quickly in which there exists a reputation server in the cluster and considers neighbor node's recommendation as well as own experience information when calculates trust values. As our performance analysis, we focus the communication delay time to generate a final trust value for each trust model.

The effects of pixel density, sub-pixel structure, luminance, and illumination on legibility of smartphone (화소 밀집도, 화소 하부구조, 휘도, 조명 조도가 스마트폰 가독성에 미치는 영향)

  • Since the domestic introduction of iPhone in 2009, use of smartphones rapidly increased and many tasks, previously performed by various devices, are now performed by smartphones. In this process the importance of reading little text using small smartphone screen has become highly significant. This research tested how display factors of smartphone (pixel density, sub-pixel structure, luminance) and environmental factor (illumination) affect legibility related discomfort in text reading. The results indicated that legibility related discomfort is largely affected by pixel density, where people experience inconvenience when the pixel density becomes lower than 300 PPI. Illumination has limited effect on legibility related discomfort. Participants reported more legibility related discomfort when stimulus presented in various levels of illumination rather than single illumination level. Sub-pixel structure and luminance did not affected legibility related discomfort. Based on the results we suggest lower limit resolution of smart devices (smartphones, tablet computers) of different sizes for text legibility.

The Implications for Science Education of the Evolutionary Perspective on Education (교육에 대한 진화론적 관점이 과학교육에 주는 시사점)

  • The purpose of this study is to review the literatures on the evolutionary perspective on education and to draw the educational implications for science education. This study addresses on several topics as follows: our common misunderstandings about the evolutionary perspective on education; children's inherent knowledge and abilities, their learning about the evolutionarily novel knowledge and abilities in school, their difficulties in academic learning, and the instructional strategies to cope with the difficulties; and the implications for science education from the evolutionary perspective. The evolutionary perspective on education has provided new insights how culturally important information is transmitted across generations in the past hunting-gathering societies and the modern societies, and how children's inherent motivational and behavioral dispositions affect their academic learning. In addition, the new perspective on education can be used to generate empirical hypotheses about children's science learning, and with the further research, could lead to useful implications and ultimately improve educational outcomes.
