Design and Cold Flow test of a Multi-injector Engine using Hydrogen Peroxide/Kerosene (과산화수소 케로신을 추진제로하는 다중 인젝터 설계 및 수류실험)

  • A multi-injector rocket engine using high concentrated hydrogen peroxide and kerosene as the oxidizer and fuel was designed and fabricated. Six coaxial swirl injectors were mounted on the mixing head and flow analysis in the manifold was performed to minimize stagnation and recirculation zones. Finally, uniformity of mass flow rate and spray pattern was evaluated by cold flow tests and the mixing head design process was successfully verified the results.

  • In this study, a coaxial swirl injector using hydrogen peroxide and kerosene was designed and combustion performance tests were performed to evaluate combustion characteristic according to mixture ratio. Spray characteristic of the injector was verified by cold flow test and combustion performances according to mixture ratio were evaluated by the characteristic exhaust velocity. Test results showed that the combustion efficiency at the design condition was about 95% and the pressure fluctuation was very small.

  • A water-flow test for acceptance verification is carried out for a nonimpinging-type injector prior to the design-performance verification of 70 N-class liquid-rocket engine under development. It is observed that there exist varying characteristics of atomization among the injector-orifices caused by a fabrication crudeness of orifice holes which can be judged from a microscopic standpoint. The flow shedding phenomenon and ruffle on the surface of liquid column (or droplet) could be caught from the instantaneous spray images.

  • To analyze the dynamic behavior and the structure of the gaseous methane-gaseous oxygen diffusion flame formed by a swirl/shear-coaxial injector, combustion experiments were carried out under different propellant injection conditions. As a result, the OH radical emission intensity of the diffusion flame visualized through chemiluminescence was observed to increase as the propellant mass flow and the momentum flux ratio increased. And flames with swirl showed a more high radical emission intensity than those without swirl.

  • Deteriorated agricultural diesel engines using mechanical fuel injection systems have low fuel injection pressures. And they are not equipped with an exhaust gas abatement device, so it produces a lot of exhaust gas. Remanufactured used injectors can reduce emissions because spray characteristics are improved. In addition, remanufacturing is environmentally friendly and economical compared to producing new parts. For efficient injector remanufacturing, it is necessary to conduct a comparison experiment on the spray characteristics of an used mechanical injector and a new injector of the same model. In this study, the spray characteristics of the two injectors were compared by performing an injection quantity measurement and a spray visualization experiment. As a result, the used injector had a larger injection quantity, a shorter spray tip penetration, a wider spray angle and a smaller spray area than the new injector.

  • To understand the atomization performance in gas-liquid swirl-coaxial injector applied to a small rocket engine, a cold-flow test was performed by varying the design parameters and supply condition of propellants. As the swirl-chamber diameter and the angle of the convergent section, which are design parameters of injector increased, the spray performance of the injector improved by increasing the swirl strength. In addition, as the gas-liquid momentum-flux ratio increased, the gas flow separated some of the droplets from the liquid film, and a gas-droplet mixture core was formed in the center of the spray sheet.

  • The LPG engine technology in Korea has made significant advances with the mass production of LPG vehicle with liquid phase LPG injection system, and have reached to satisfy the SULEV emission regulations. As of now, domestic production of LPG fuelled vehicles in Korea have reached more than 2.4 millions, which is the best in the world. But in the technical point of view, the key technologies for fuel injection system of LPG fuelled engine are mainly dependent on foreign license. Especially, fuel injector in the liquid phase LPG injection system has been imported from C company, which supplies LPG injector worldwide in the name of model D. In the context, it is quite urgent to develop the LPG injector technology in Korea. In this study, WCC coating which is key technology to develop LPG injector by reducing the fuel leakage was developed and tested. Considering the fuel leakage of 0.06cc/min in commercial LPG injector, fuel leakage was reduced down to 0.04cc/min with WCC coating technology and optimization of injector structure.

  • The behavior of spray emanating from an injector to be employed in a liquid-propellant thrust chamber is investigated by optical measurement techniques. The injector has eight holes, each of which has 30 cant angle from the center-axis with the diameter of 0.406 mm. In order to examine an atomization process according to the spray-generation conditions and the evolution along spray downstream, variational features in the velocity and size of droplets obtained through Dual-mode Phase Doppler An 799emometry (DPDA) are delineated and discussed together with instantaneous plane images captured by using Nd:Yag laser sheet beam. A categorization of spray-flow regime representing the atomization and turbulent nature is made through evaluating the non-dimensional parameters, i.e., Reynolds number and Weber number based upon the theoretical injection velocity. These qualitative and quantitative data of spray breakup will be a firm basis for the design of brand-new thruster

  • An experimental study was performed to understand spray characteristics of the slinger injector. system for the micro turbojet engine. In this fuel injection system, fuel is sprayed and atomized in the combustor by centrifugal forces of engine shaft. This experimental apparatus consist of a high speed rotating Spindle, slinger injector, pressure tank and acrylic case. The droplet size and velocity were measured by PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) and spray was visualized by using Nd-Yag laser-based flash photography. From the test results, the droplet size(SMD) is largely affected to rotational speed, mass flow rate and the number of injection orifice. From the this experimental study, we could understand the spray characteristics of the slinger injection system and obtain the optimum shape of the slinger injector nozzle which is suitable for the micro turbojet engine.

  • A bag filter collector is a kind of air purifier that organizes several or dozens of filters to purify fine dust and release clean air into the atmosphere. If the bag filter length is less than 5m, the dust and fume attached to the bag filter could be effectively removed by passing the compressed air generated by the diaphragm valve through the venturi. Injectors that are more efficient and economical are urgently needed to achieve satisfactory results for long-bag exhaustion of more than 7 meters.
