  • The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationship between regular interdental cleaning and periodontal condition. A total of 319 pregnant women were recruited at 21 to 24 weeks of gestation. Information on demographics, health status and health behaviors including regulary use of interdental cleaning aids, that can influence periodontal condition was collected. Full mouth periodontal probing was performed. Periodontitis was defined as CAL of 4.0 mm or greater on 2 or more sites not on the same tooth. Gingivitis was defined as 15 percent and more sites showed bleeding on probing. Gingival crevice fluid sample was collected for bacterial analysis. We studied a total of 319 subjects, comprised of 116 subjects who use interdental cleaning device regularly and 203 subjects who didn't. Subjects who do not use interdental cleaning regularly had 2.3 times higher risk of gingivitis and 2.7 times of periodontitis, 2.3 times more amount of P. gingivalis. There was a significant relationship between regular interdental cleaning and periodontal condition in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic validity of early proximal caries lesions using laser fluorescence and whether the detection could be enhanced using a fluorescent dye. Direct visual examination and bitewing radiograph were used for comparison. The subjects of this study were 30 children of $3{\sim}9$ years old. Laser fluorescence and dye-enhanced laser fluorescence(mixed wavelength of 488 and 514 nm) were used and viewed through glasses(excluding wavelength<520 nm). For dye-enhanced laser fluorescence a 0.075% sodium fluorescein dye was applied before examination. Proximal caries lesion of each subject was assessed using visual examination, bitewing radiograph, laser fluorescence, and dye-enhanced laser fluorescence. The results in the three detection methods were compared to the assessment of bitewing radiograph. The results from the present study can be summarized as follows: 1. There was highly correlation(r=0.725-0.911) between the bitewing radiograph and all three detection methods(p<0.05) 2. The reproducibility(kappa value) of the visual examination, laser fluorescence and dye-enhanced laser fluorescence comparing with bitewing radiograph of proximal caries was 0.451, 0.683, 0.772, respectively. There was highest correlation between dye-enhanced laser fluorescence and bitewing radiograph for detection of proximal caries. The results from this study indicated that the dye-enhanced laser fluorescence considered to be accurate and reliable method in detecting proximal caries.

  • Purpose : For the head and neck radiotherapy, abutting photon field with electron field is frequently used for the irradiation of posterior neck when tolerable dose on spinal cord has been reached. Materials and methods : Using 6 MV X-ray and 9 MeV electron beams of Clinac1800(Varian, USA) linear accelerator, we performed film dosimetry by the X-OMAT V film of Kodak in solid water phantom according to depths(0 cm, 1.5 cm, 3 cm, 5 cm). 6 MV X-ray and 9 MeV electron(1Gy) were exposes to 8cm depth and surface(SSD 100cm) of phantom. The dose distribution to the junction line between photon($10cm{\times}10cm$ field with block) and electron($15cm{\times}15cm$ field with block) fields was also measured according to depths(0 cm, 0.5 1.5 cm, 3 cm, 5 cm). Results : At the junction line between photon and electron fields, the hot spot was developed on the side of the photon field and a cold spot was developed on that of the electron field. The hot spot in the photon side was developed at depth 1.5 cm with 7 mm width. The maximum dose of hot spot was increased to $6\%$ of reference doses in the photon field. The cold spot in the electron side was developed at all measured depths(0.5 cm-3 cm) with 1-12.5 mm widths. The decreased dose in the cold spot was $4.5-30\%$ of reference dose in the electron field. Conclusion : When we make use of abutting photon field with electron field for the treatment of head and neck cancer we should consider the hot and cold dose area in the junction of photon and electron field according to location of tumor.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the tooth surface caries patterns in the primary dentition according to breast or bottle feeding. The subjects of study were 815 children, 36 to 71 months old, in Iksan, Cheongju and Ulsan cities. The caregivers of the children were asked which they fed between the breast milk and the infant formula during the 1st year after birth and the duration of feeding. There was no significant difference in dmfs between the breast milk group and the infant formula group(significance level 0.05, same below). Tooth groups, tooth surface groups, teeth, and tooth surfaces which had significantly higher dmfs in the breast milk group than in the infant formula group were upper anterior teeth(tooth groups), upper incisors' buccal and proximal surfaces(tooth surface groups), upper incisors and upper second molars(teeth), upper central incisors' buccal and distal surfaces, upper lateral incisors' buccolingual and proximal surfaces, upper 2nd molars'lingual, proximal, and occlusal surfaces, and lower 2nd molars' buccal and distal surfaces. In the breast milk group, tooth groups, tooth surface groups, teeth, and tooth surfaces which dmfs significantly increased as the duration of the feeding increased were upper anterior teeth and upper molars(tooth groups), upper anterior teeth's proximal surfaces, upper molars' buccolingual, proximal, and occlusal surfaces, lower molars' proximal surfaces(tooth surface groups), upper anterior teeth, upper molars, lower 2nd molars(teeth), upper anterior teeth's proximal surfaces, upper 1st molars'buccolingual, proximal, and occlusal surfaces, upper 2nd molars' buccal surfaces, and lower 2nd molars'mesial surfaces(tooth surfaces). In the infant formula group, dmfs increased after 3 years of feeding, but the difference was not significant. Caries prevention is necessary in case of breastfeeding more than two years.

  • Purpose. The aim of this study was to evaluate the proximal contact with a dental floss compared to a celluloid strip and a metal strip in normal dental arch and investigate what the most effective method for measuring is. Materials and methods. The subjects of this study was consisted with 20 healthy adults (10 males and 10 females) who had normal dentition. A dentist with more than 5 years of clinical experience evaluated the proximal contacts using a dental floss method, a celluloid strip method, and a metal strip method. Statistical analysis were performed by the use of Mann-Whitney U test. A P-value < .05 was considered statistically significant in all analysis. In addition, in the evaluation of proximal contact using a dental floss, the measurement of proximal contact using a celluloid strip and a metal strip was compared. Results. 80 % of all proximal contact was proper. Proper proximal contact was observed at the posterior area compared to the anterior area (P < .05). And male had proper proximal contact at the anterior area, female had proper proximal contact at the posterior area (P < .05). The consistency analysis between the results of the celluloid strip and the metal strip experiment on the results obtained from the floss using the consistency scale Kappa index shows that using celluloid strip is more advantageous than using the metal strip. Conclusion. Only 80% of all proximal contact was proper. Using celluloid strips with various thickness for evaluating of proximal contact is considered to be helpful for accurate measuring of proximal contact.

  • For the head and neck radiotherapy, the technique of half beam using independent collimator is very useful to avoid overlapping of fields particularly when the lateral neck fields are placed adjacent to anterior supraclavicular field. Also abutting photon field with electron field is frequently used for the irradiation of posterior neck when tolerable dose on spinal cord has been reached. Using 6 MV X-ray and 9 MeV electron beams of Clinac1800(Varian, USA) linear accelerator, we performed film dosimetry by the X-OMAT V film of Kodak in solid water phantom and the dose distribution at beam center of 2 half beams further examined according to depths(0 cm, 1.5 cm, 3 cm, 5 cm) for single anterior half beam and anterior/posterior half beam. The dose distribution to the junction line between photon and electron fields was also measured. For the single anterior half beam, the absorption doses at 0.3 cm, 0.5 cm and 1 cm distances from beam center were 88%, 93% and 95% of open beam, respectively. In the anterior/posterior half beams, the absorption doses at 0.3 cm, 0.5 cm and 1 cm distances from beam center were 92%, 93% and 95% of open beam, respectively At the junction line between photon and electron fields, hot spot was developed on the side of the photon field and a cold spot was developed on that of the electron field. The hot spot in the photon side was developed at depth 1.5 cm with 7 mm width. The maximum dose of hot spot was increased to 6% of reference doses in the photon field. The cold spot in the electron side was developed at all measured depths(0.5 cm-3 cm) with 1-12.5 mm widths. The decreased dose in the cold spot was 4.5-30% of reference dose in the electron field. With above results, we concluded that when using electron beam or independent jaw for head and neck radiotherapy, the hot and cold dose area should be considered as critical point.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of Q-ray view (All-in-one Bio, Seoul, Korea) in detection of proximal caries in primary molars with sound marginal ridges. Thirty two children aged 3-9 years (average $5.6{\pm}1.3$ years old) were chosen, and two examiners evaluated 100 proximal surfaces of primary molars with sound marginal ridges. The teeth were examined with; (a) visual examination, (b) Q-ray view, (c) DIAGNOdent (KaVo, Biberach, Germany) and (d) digital periapical radiography. Kappa statistic was used to assess the agreement between each examination method and the degree of caries progression. The kappa values for enamel caries were 0.15 (visual examination), 0.10 (Q-ray view), 0.25 (DIAGNOdent) and 0.68 (digital periapical radiography). The kappa values for dentinal caries were 0.34 (visual examination), 0.56 (Q-ray view), 0.44 (DIAGNOdent) and 0.70 (digital periapical radiography). Although Q-ray view showed low diagnostic ability in detection of enamel caries, it was effective in detection of hidden proximal caries extended into dentin. Q-ray view would be a useful and simple device which could aid pediatric dentists in detection of hidden proximal caries in primary molars especially when examining uncooperative children or disabled persons.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the newly-developed $Qraypen^{TM}$ (All In One Bio, Korea) system for the diagnosis of early proximal caries by comparing it with the conventional methods of visual inspection and periapical radiography. This study was carried out from July 2015 to April 2016 targeting 32 children aged 7~12 years who visited Y-Dental Clinic for school oral health examinations. Two investigators selected and examined a total of 153 primary molars that had not undergone restorative treatment. Comparisons were carried out between visual inspections, readings of posterior periapical radiography images, and readings of $Qraypen^{TM}$ images. This study revealed that the percentage of interproximal surfaces of primary molar teeth without caries incidence was 83.7% using $Qraypen^{TM}$ imaging and 84.9% using visual inspection and periapical radiography. The differences between the two methods were not statistically significant. Thus, $Qraypen^{TM}$ is expected to be a useful and convenient auxiliary diagnostic device that can facilitate the detection of hidden proximal caries in primary molars.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the proximal caries detecting ability and identify the optimal cut-off values of two types of laser fluorescence (LF) devices; classic type (DD) and pen type (DDpen). The number of proximal surfaces participated in this study were 164 surfaces in primary dentition and 438 surfaces in permanent dentition. Each tooth surface was sequentially assessed by two types of LF devices, and bitewing radiograph. The radiographs were classified into 3 groups in primary dentition ($pR_0$, $pR_1$, $pR_2$), and 4 groups in permanent dentition ($PR_0$, $PR_1$, $PR_2$, $PR_3$) according to the depth of caries, and used as gold standard. In primary dentition, the area under the curve (AUC) values of DD were 0.851 and 0.890, and those of DDpen were 0.883 and 0.917, respectively in enamel caries and dentin caries. In permanent dentition, the AUC values of DD were 0.762 and 0.886, and those of DDpen were 0.828 and 0.958, respectively in enamel caries and dentin caries. When detecting proximal caries in posterior teeth with LF devices, DDpen is more useful than DD in both primary and permanent dentition. However, in primary dentition, DD can also be useful to detect proximal caries.
