  • This paper summarizes the design procedure and constructibility of an ECC (Engineered Cementitious Composite), which is a synthetic fiber-reinforced composite produced with the Portland cement-based mortar matrix. This study employs a stepwise method to develop useful ECC in construction field, which possesses different fluid properties to facilitate diverse types of processing (i.e., self-consolidating or spray processing). To control the rheological properties of the composite, the aggregates and reinforcing fibers were initially selected based on micromechanical analysis and steady-state cracking theory. The stability and consequent viscosity of the suspensions were then mediated by optimizing the dosage of the chemical and mineral admixtures. The rheological properties altered through this approach were revealed to be effective in obtaining ECC-hardened properties, represented by pseudo strain-hardening behavior in uniaxial tension, allowing the readily achievement of the desired function of the fresh ECC.

  • Although researches on the beams strengthened with Fiber reinforced Polymers (FRPs) have recently been conducted around the world, there are few researches on the beams with FRPs under a sustained load. This paper presents the behavior of the beams with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers (GFRP) under a sustained load during 300 days. Strains of steel and FRP reinforcement were measured in order to investigate the behavior of the beams. Additionally, Adjusted Effective Modulus Method (AEMM) and Ghali and Farve's method were used to predict increase in the stress and strain caused by creep and shrinkage. Through the experiment, it was found that the beam with CFRP is more effective than the beam with GFRP in terms of flexural strengthening. Compared with analytical results, it was indicated that strains of tension steels were overestimated, whereas strains of compression steels were underestimated.

  • Steel concentrically braced frame is an efficient system that can acquire resistance against the lateral force of buildings with the least amount of quantity. In this study is intended to proceed on the research of schemes for reinforcement by supplementing previously installed H-formed brace with non-welded cold-formed plastic stiffening materials restricting the flexure and buckling and acquire a consistent strength on the tensile and compressive force. As for the measures of supplementing previously-installed inverted V-formed braced frame, stiffening materials in the previous studies were converted to weak-axial supplementing materials to suggest a specific scheme evaluating the structural function through an experiment of members, interpretation of members, and frame-focused experiment. Reinforced brace satisfied the requirement to be prevent AISC brace from being ruptured due to imbalanced strength in the beam.

  • Because there is no suspension and differential devices at cart body, the deformation of the frame happened during kart driving affects the driving performance caused by the elastic deformation and the fatigue life of kart frame resulted from the permanent deformation. The dynamic behavior of kart caused by the torsional deformation during circular driving is the important factor of these two kinds of deformations. In order to analyze the dynamic behavior of kart at this curved section, GPS is used to trace the track of kart and the torsional stress at kart-frame has been measured with real time. The mechanical properties of kart-frames for leisure and racing are investigated through material property analysis and tensile test. Torsional stress concentration and frame distortion are investigated through stress analysis on frame on the basis of study result. The real karts for leisure and racing kart are also tested in each driving condition by using the driving analysis equipment. The driving behavior of kart at the curved section are investigated through this test. As the phenomenon of load movement due to centrifugal force at car is happened during circular driving, the torsional stress occurs at cart steel frame.

  • This study evaluated the performance of Korean epoxy asphalt mixtures using several laboratory tests. Four types of epoxy asphalt mixtures were manufactured based on 13mm dense graded asphalt mixtures: three Korean and one Japanese epoxy asphalt mixtures where 20% or 40% of asphalt binder was replaced by epoxy resins. Curing time was determined as 3 and 6 hours for the mixtures containing 40% and 20% of epoxy resins, respectively. From the laboratory tests including wheel tracking, indirect tension fatigue, bending beam, and moisture susceptibility tests, it was concluded that the epoxy asphalt mixtures had superior performance than conventional asphalt mixtures except moisture susceptibility. Also, the performance of the Korean epoxy asphalt mixtures was comparable to the Japanese mixtures. Thermal coefficient, bond strength, and indirect tension tests were conducted to examine the applicability of the Korean epoxy asphalt mixtures to concrete repair. Its adhesion was strong enough to be bonded to surrounding concrete materials and its tensile strength was comparable to the concrete, but thermal expansion coefficient was 5 times greater than the surrounding concrete.

  • In a tension-controlled section, all steel tension reinforcement is assumed to yield at ultimate when using the strength design method to calculate the nominal flexural strength of members with steel reinforcement arranged in multiple layers. Therefore, the tension force is assumed to act at the centroid of the reinforcement with a magnitude equal to the area of tension reinforcement times the yield strength of steel. Because FRP materials have no plastic region, the stress in each reinforcement layer will vary depending on its distance from the neutral axis. Similarly, if different types of FRP bars are used to reinforce the same member, the stress level in each bar type will vary, and the member will show different behavior from our expectation. In this study, six high-strength concrete beam specimens reinforced with conventional steels, CFRP bars, and GFRP bars as flexural reinforcements were constructed and tested. The members reinforced with hybrid reinforcements showed higher stiffness, smaller crack width, and better ductility than the members reinforced with single type of FRP bars.

  • The optical performance of the mirror for satellite camera is highly dependent on the adhesive properties between the mirror and its support. Therefore, in order to design a mirror with high optical performance, the mechanical properties of adhesives should be well defined. In this paper, the mechanical properties of three kinds of space adhesives are studied. Elastic moduli of the adhesives are determined by tensile tests. Stress-strain relation is obtained by using exponential curve fitting for the adhesive which shows non-linear behavior. In case of the linear behavior material, elastic modulus is calculated through linear curve fitting. For the tensile tests, several points have been selected in the operating temperature range of the adhesive. The elastic modulus of each adhesive is expressed as a function of temperature. Characteristics of the adhesives are discussed regarding their temperature sensitivity.

  • In the case of the UHP (Ultra high performance) tire that the demand has increased rapidly, compared with the commonly used tire, severe deformation has been observed because of the low aspect ratio. When repeated deformations are applied to the sidewall rubber, accumulated fatigue damage may cause fatigue failure. Thus, the evaluation of the durability of the tire sidewall rubber has become a very important issue to prevent accidents that occur while the vehicle is running. However, the research and design criteria for the durability performance of the tire sidewall rubber hardly exist. In this study, we suggest a lifetime prediction formula using strain energy density obtained by performing tensile tests and fatigue tests on two different kinds of the tire sidewall compounds. Additionally, the applicability of our findings for low fuel consumption tires was reviewed by converting the fatigue life of the sidewall rubber into the expected mileage of the tire.

  • SHCCs (Strain Hardening Cement Composites) show the high energy tolerance capacity due to the interfacial bonding of the fibers to the cement matrix. For effective material design and application of SHCCs, it is needed to investigate the compression, four-point bending, direct tensile response of SHCCs with different types of fibers and water-cement ratio. For these purposes, three kinds of fibers were used: PP(polypropylene, 2.0%), PVA(Polyvinyl alcohol, 2.0%), PE (Polyethylene, 1.0%). Also, effects of water-cement ratio(0.45, 0.60) on the SHCCs were evaluated in this paper. As the result of test, SHCCs with PVA and PE fiber were showed better overall behavior than specimens with PP fibers on bending and direct tensile test. Also, for the same type of fiber, SHCCs with water-cement ratio of 0.45 exhibited higher ultimate strength than specimen with water-cement ratio of 0.60 on compression strength, and showed the multiple cracking on bending and direct tensile test. Therefore, to improve of workability and dispersibility of SHCCs on water-cement ratio of 0.60, continual studies were needed.
