  • It is used water quality data that was measured at Pyeongchanggang real time monitoring stations in Namhan river. These characteristics were analyzed with the water qualify of rainy and nonrainy periods. TOC (Total Organic Carbon) data of rainy periods has correlation with discharge and shows high values of mean, maximum, and standard deviation. DO (Dissolved Oxygen) value of rainy periods is lower than those of nonrainy periods. Input data of the water quality forecasting models that they were constructed by neural network and neuro-fuzzy was chosen as the reasonable data, and water qualify forecasting models were applied. LMNN, MDNN, and ANFIS models have achieved the highest overall accuracy of TOC data. LMNN (Levenberg-Marquardt Neural Network) and MDNN (MoDular Neural Network) model which are applied for DO forecasting shows better results than ANFIS (Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System). MDNN model shows the lowest estimation error when using daily time, which is qualitative data trained with quantitative data. The observation of discharge and water quality are effective at same point as well as same time for real time management. But there are some of real time water quality monitoring stations far from the T/M water stage. Pyeongchanggang station is one of them. So discharge on Pyeongchanggang station was calculated by developed runoff neural network model, and the water quality forecasting model is linked to the runoff forecasting model. That linked model shows the improvement of waterquality forecasting.

  • This study proposes an approach to improve the accuracy of land assessment result focused on the Land Suitability Assessment. The detailed analysis processes are; (a) that they are analyzed considering resistance in distance measurement on the space characteristics of location, and; (b) that an assessment result is measured according to the threshold definition of membership function, which is applied in estimating conservation suitability. The assessment results are; firstly, the method considering resistance better reflects the local characteristics of area with worse accessibility including rivers and mountains than one by linear distance; secondly, the existing method that the maximum value of a target area is defined as the maximum threshold may draw a value evaluated lower than a threshold definition considering the distribution of measured indices. Finally, satellite images are overlapped with the assessed results, the applicability level from the approach proposed by this study is more coincident with the present status. The assessment method proposed by this study can be meaningful in view of that it improves the accuracy of Land Suitability Assessment. Furthermore, it can be applied as SDSS, which can support effective establishment of urban policies, in case of complementing the problems in executing the assessment system.

  • A remedial investigation was conducted at five military training ranges in northern Gyeonggi province to collect information necessary for the design of on-site treatment facilities for the abatement of explosive compounds release to the environment. These information includes (i) identification of dominant explosive compounds in each range, (ii) discharge/migration routes, and (iii) contaminant distribution in particle size fraction and settling velocity of the soils. The results of investigation showed that TNT and RDX are the major contaminants but the extent of contamination varied depending on the types of military training practices and topography of the site. RDX was also detected in the subsurface soil and in the nearby stream within the training ranges, suggesting release of contaminants to streams. The median concentrations of explosives in the surface soil were less than 20 mg/kg despite several 'hot spots' in which explosives concentrations often exceeds several hundred mg/kg. The average clay contents in the soil of target area was less than 5 % compared to 12 % in the control, indicating loss of smaller particles by surface runoff during rainfall due to lack of vegetative land cover. Analysis of explosive compounds and particle size distribution showed that the amount of explosive compounds in soil particles smaller than 0.075 mm was less than 10 % of the total. Settling column tests also revealed that the quantity of explosive compounds in the liquid phase of the effluent was greater than that in the solid phase. Therefore, pre-treatment of particulate matter in surface runoff of shooting range with a simple settling basin and subsequent effluent treatment with planted constructed wetlands as polishing stage for explosives in the aqueous phase would provide the shooting ranges with a self-standing, sustainable, green solution.

  • To improve the water quality of the recently constructed Siwhaho, sluice gates were operated to allow free exchange of water with the sea. This estuarine lake connected to the outer sea through narrow gates is affected mainly by flushing by gate operation and river flows and wind forcing sometimes. As a predicting tool far the water qualities, a three-dimensional finite volume model CE-QUAL-ICM is incorporated into a finite element hydrodynamic model, TIDE3D. In coupling these two different modules, a new error minimization technique is applied by considering conservation of mass. Model tests for one year after calibration and validation using field observation show that eutrophication and other biological changes reach quasi-steady state after initial 60 days of simulation, thus it would be necessary to consider moderate ramp up option to remove initial uncertainties due to cold start option. Sediment-water interaction might not be a concern in the long-term simulation, since its effect is negligible. Simulated results show the newly applied scheme can be applied with satisfaction not only fur lessening of eutrophic processes in an estuarine lake but also looking for some active circulation to improve water quality.

  • The geological factors for causing ground subsidence are very diverse. It can be affected by any geological or extrinsic influences, and even within the same geological factor, the soil depression impact factor can be determined by different physical properties. As a result of reviewing a large number of papers and case histories, it can be seen that there are seven categories of ground subsidence factors. The depth and thickness of the overburden can affect the subsidence depending on the existence of the cavity, whereas the depth and orientation of the boundary between soil and rock are dominant factors in the ground composed of soil and rock. In case of soil layers, more various influencing factors exist such as type of soil, shear strength, relative density and degree of compaction, dry unit weight, water content, and liquid limit. The type of rock, distance from the main fracture and RQD can be influential factors in the bedrock. When approaching from the hydrogeological point of view, the rainfall intensity, the distance and the depth from the main channel, the coefficient of permeability and fluctuation of ground water level can influence to ground subsidence. It is also possible that the ground subsidence can be affected by external factors such as the depth of excavation and distance from the earth retaining wall, groundwater treatment methods at excavation work, and existence of artificial facilities such as sewer pipes. It is estimated that to evaluate the ground subsidence factor during the construction of underground structures in urban areas will be essential. It is expected that ground subsidence factors examined in this study will contribute for the reliable evaluation of the ground subsidence risk.

  • This study aims to figure out water quality impacts due to sudden disturbances of sediments during dike construction in land reclamation for the northern part of the Siwhaho Lake where heavily deteriorated settlements from upstream loadings are outstanding. We exploit a 3-D water quality model CE-QUAL-ICM combined with a hydrodynamic model TIDE3D. Simulations are done accounting water-sediment interaction in a 4-$\sigma$ layers. Long-term simulation for 1-year shows that bottom layers around the disturbance location are only affected and marks very high concentration. Complete vertical mixing appears at least 5km apart to downward due to complex effects of geometry, bathymetry and river inflows. It should be addressed that existing condition of the Siwhaho Lake stands for high concentration of COD and TP in winter and spring due to relatively high incoming loadings, however the effect of sediment disturbances yields reverse phenomena, i.e., impacts of dike construction arise greatly in summer and fall. Refined grid system consisting of 150m${\times}$150m rectangular grid, which is doubled system compared to previous study (Suh et al.,2002), gives affordable results by reducing flux differences through a cell especially in front of gate.

  • Wetland systems are widely accepted natural water purification systems around the world in nonpoint sources pollution control. Constructed wetlands have become a popular technology for treating contaminated surface and wastewater. In this study, the field experiment to reduce nonpoint source pollution loadings from polluted stream waters using wetland system was performed from June 2002 to March 2004, including winter performance using four newly constructed wetlands. The Dangjin stream water flowing into Seokmun estuarine lake was pumped into wetlands, and inflow and hydraulic residence time of the system was $500m^{3}{\~}1500m^{3}/day\;and\;2{\~}5$ days respectively. After 3 years operation plant-coverage was about $80~90\%$ from zero at initial stage even with no plantation. Average water quality of the influent in growing season was BOD_{5}\;3.96mg/L$, TSS 22.98 mg/L, T-N 3.29 mg/L, T-P 0.30 mg/L. The average removal rate of four wetlands for $BOD_{5},\;TSS,\;T-N\;and\;T-P$ in growing season was $24\%$, $62\%$, $54\%$, and $51\%$, respectively. And average water quality of the influent in winter season was $BOD_{5}$ 4.92 mg/L, TSS 12.47 mg/L, T-N 5.54 mg/L, and T-P 0.32 mg/L, respectively. The average removal rate of four wetlands for them was $-21\%$. $23\%$, $33\%$, and $53\%$, respectively. The reason of higher BOD_{5} effluent concentration in winter season might be that low temperature restrained microorganism activity and a organic body from the withered plant and algae was flown out. Except the result of $BOD_{5}$, the effectiveness of water quality improvement in winter season was satisfactory for treating polluted stream waters, and $BOD_{5}$ variation was within the range of background concentration. Performance of the experimental system was compared with existing data base (NADB), and it was within the range of general system performance. Overall, the wetland system was found to be satisfactory for NPS control such as improvement of polluted stream water.

  • Four species of water fleas (Daphnia magna, Daphnia pulex, Daphnia galeata, and Moina macrocopa) were examined for the clarification of their reproduction with culture conditions. The reproduction tests of water flea by the culture conditions were carried out. For the comparison of the reproduction rate, five media (manure-soil medium, DIN medium, M4 medium, EPA medium, fertilizer medium) were applied to determine the best medium. Daphnia magna, Daphnia pulex, and Moina macrocopa were appeared the best reproduction in the manure-soil medium at $20^{\circ}C.$ The lifespan and young reproduction were better in manure-soil medium than the others. But Daphnia galeata was lived for 34 days in the fertilizer medium at $20^{\circ}C.$ The culture of Daphnia galeata was difficult to rear than the other species. In the current study, the microcystin of Microcystis sp. did not particularly affect on the survival of water fleas. But the lifespan was short and the reproduction rate was low. Therefore water flea have a preference for Scenedesmus sp. than Microcystis sp. On the condition of the feeding Scenedesmus sp., all examined water fleas appeared to have the longest lifespan and the most young water fleas produced at any medium and temperature as compared with the feeding the Microcystis sp. For the culture temperature, the lifespan was longer on $20^{\circ}C$ than $15^{\circ}C$.

  • Fish community and its temporal-spacial variation in the Lagoon Hwajinpo, Korea were seasonally investigated with different types of fishing gears from November, 2005 to August, 2006. Total 35.812 fishes caught during the period were belonged to 24 families 37 species. Dominant species was H. nipponensis(60.8%), T, hakonensis (19.8%), and K. punctatus (5.5%) ana these species were peripheral freshwater fish. Among 37 species, primary freshwater and seawater fish were 8 species (21.6%), respectively and peripheral freshwater fish were 21 species (56.8%). Total biomass of collected fish was 279.3kg, and biomass of each species was T. hakonensis 152.9 kg, H. nipponensis 40.0 kg, K. punctatus 31.4 kg and C. haematochelius 25.3 kg, respectively. Hence, productivity of the Lagoon Hwajinpo was much higher than those of inland reservoirs. The aspect of community classified by surveyed period was changed according to the 'Breaking-sandbar', but some of peripheral freshwater fish populations made stable community in their life cycle in the lagoon. In conclusion, the Lagoon Hwajinpo seems to be maintained more natural ecosystem better than other lagoons in Korea. Therefore, the findings provide consideration of the management and restoration for this lagoon and others through the continuous observation and monitoring in future.
