  • Matsumuraeses phaseoli is one of the main pests that attack the flowers and pods of red bean (Vigna angularis) and mungbean (Vigna radiata) in Korea. To elucidate the developmental characteristics and over-wintering stage of M. phaseoli, several stages of the insect were observed through artificial rearing under outdoor conditions in Suwon ($37^{\circ}$16'N $126^{\circ}$59'E 35ASL), Korea. In colonies in which neonate larvae were reared at about 2-week intervals for more than a year, the developmental period from larva to adult emergence became longer from spring to summer, but shorter from summer to autumn; aestivation was not observed during the summer season. The colony in which rearing started on Oct 8, 2008 over-wintered as pupae and emerged in late April next year with a survival rate of 6%. However, the colony in which the rearing started on Oct 23, 2008 over-wintered as mature larvae, pupated in late April, and emerged in early and mid-May with a survival rate of 2%. When the fifth instar larvae were transferred outside from the laboratory ($25^{\circ}C$, 15L:9D) between November and February, no larvae could survive during the winter season. Some newly laid eggs and newly emerged adults could not hatch and could not survive, respectively, in outdoor conditions in November and December. These results suggest that neonate larvae of M. phaseoli that hatch in October can over-winter as late larvae or pupae in Suwon, Korea.

  • To study overwintering biology of the oriental tobacco budworm (OTB), Helicoverpaa.ssulta, OTB larvae were collected from middle and southern region of Korea in the autumn and rearedto diapausing pupae. Diapausing pupae were held at two different locations (Suwon and Chinju) and wererecollected in the spring to observe adult emergence rate and duration to adult emergence at 25$^{\circ}$C. Thesurvivorship of overwintering pupae was less than 5% when the pupae were buried in the soil in 20cmdepth. However, more than 60% of the pupae survived when they were kept in the plastic cup withartificial diet and were buried in the soil. The mean developmental periods of overwintering pupae at 25"C varied from 20.4 days to 43.9 days depending on years and locations where larvae were collected andpupae were held. The proportion of individuals which required longer than 30 days for development washigher in the population from the middle regions than those of southern regions. However, the proportiondecreased when the pupae collected from middle regions were held at Chinju, southern region. Chinju, southern region.

  • We compared colony development and survival rate after artificial hibernation between the bumblebees, Bombus terrestris, produced from domestic and foreign companies. The number of worker and queen produced from foundation colony of three domestic and one foreign companies was 232.4-270.8 and 62.0-181.8, respectively, but there was no statistical difference. In colony development of B. terrestris queens which were terminated diapause by $CO_2$ narcosis at different companies, oviposition rate, colony foundation and progeny-queen production of bumblebees produced from domestic companies were superior to those from foreign company. But foreign company in the number of worker and queen was superior to domestic companies. On the other hand, survival rate and colony development of B. terrestris queens, which were terminated diapause by artificial hibernation at three domestic and two foreign companies, were no significant differences. These results indicate that oviposition, colony foundation, progeny-queen production, and survival rate after artificial hibernation showed no differences between the bumblebees produced from domestic and foreign companies.

  • This study focused on patterning waterbirds occurrences at the western costal area of the Korean Peninsula in winter and relating the occurrence patterns with their environmental factors. Waterbird communities were monitored at 10 different study areas, and the composition of land cover as environmental factors was estimated at each study area. Overall dabbling ducks were the most abundant with 84% of total individuals, followed by shorebird and diving ducks. Species Anae platyrhynchos was the first dominant species, and Anas formosa was the second one. Self-organizing map (SOM), an unsupervised artificial neural network, was applied for patterning wintering waterbird communities, and identified 6 groups according to the differences of communities compositions. Each group reflected the differences of indicator species as well as their habitats.

  • Grapevines will experience various types of winter damage. Some winter damages are caused by mechanical injury, freezing temperatures or poor vine vigor. This research was conducted to find out the appropriate control methods through selection of resistant rootstocks and improvement of overwintering methods for the control of crown gall disease on 'Kyoho' grape. The crown gall symptoms were not found when three stock plants of grapevine SO4, 5BB and 3306 were inoculated with $10^4cfu/ml$ of Agrobacterium vitis strains (YK2823, YK3312, LMG259, HKA234). But when they were inoculated with higher concentration $(10^6 cfu/ml)$ of A. vitis, irrespective of stocks plants, crown galls were formed all of them and the gall size was much smaller than that of kyoho. Three stock plants were selected as resistant based on above mentioned. Covering trunks and branches with rice straw and insulating coverlet was the most effective method for prevention of crown gall disease. This treatment minimized the ambient temperature changes on grapevine trees during winter season to $9.6^{\circ}C$ and the normal plant growth was due to the absence of freezing injury.

  • The environmental factors affecting maturity of pseudothecia overwintered in iufected leaves by Mycosphaserella nawae was investigated. The pseudothecia in the overwinteringinfected leaves were matured at the end of April when the average temperature was $14^{\circ}C$ and precipitation was enough. Pseudothecia initiation was preceded by the fungal biomass development in a given host. The maturity of the pseudothecia from the leaves defoliated in early October was earlier and higher than those defoliated in November of the previous year. Pseudothecia development was also positively affected by low temperature. The maturity time, as determined by percentage of matured pseudothecia out of prematured ones, was also 20 days earlier, and the rate of maturity was higher for the leaves overwintered in door, than for those kept in greenhouse. We have providedevidence that the conidia play a significant role in the epidemiology of this pathogen. Many pseudothecia were developed in the leaves infected by artificially inoculated conidia and maturation rate of the pseudothecia was not different from that of the typical symptom by ascospores infection of Mycosphaerella nawae.

  • The habitat composition in the Han-river estuary, where white-naped crane(Grus vipio; endangered migrating bird) spend winter, was analysed by the geographic information system(GIS). And the habitat use pattern of white-naped crane collected by satellite tracking method was analysed. The % composition of seven habitat categories of land cover classification was compared for the buffers of radii 100 m, 200 m, 500 m, and 1 km, respectively, around the white-naped crane position point(n=228), and the statistical analysis was done using chi-square test. The results showed no selective use of habitat area by white-naped crane in the buffers of 100 m, 200 m and 500 m, but showed clear selection of habitat use (p < 0.05) in the case of 1 km buffer.

  • An experimental study on seedling production and wintering to develop pearl oyster, Pinctada fucata culture in Korea was carried out. from December 1986 to November 1988 in waters of Kori and of Seogwipo as wintering and of Eogu as culturing grounds. All pearl oysters as the sample were imported from Japan. The highest water temperature at Eogu was $23.6^{\circ}C$ in August and the lowest at Kori and Seogwipo were $13.2^{\circ}C$ and $14.0^{\circ}C$c in February, respectively, Phytoplankton was relatively plentiful but mortality of pearl oysters was $20.5\%$, which was twice at Seogwipo, due to high amount of suspended muds. It shows that Seogwipo is better wintering ground even though the amount of phytoplankton is lower than Kori. Average rates of pearl production after 6-months and 15-months period were $58.2\%$ and $48.3\%$ respecitively. Thickness of pearl layer and coating rate were also satisfactory. More than half of the pearls produced was so-called the pink-pearl, the best colour. About $10\%$ of them was the best quality. There were three peaks of D-shape larvae from July to September and it took about one month for D-shape larvae to become seed-shells. Settling was satisfactory and most of them settled at 1$\~$3 m layer and the best was 2 m-layer. Success of settling was supposed due to high water temperature and low precipitation than the normal year.
