  • There are two case history. One is the case of 3 wells-group well system-drilled and artificially hydrofractured for dewatering to help to excavate and treat deep building foundation. The recoveries of groundwater of 3 wells are increased 29%, 42% and 110% respectively through hydrofracturing. Simultaneous pumping test reveals that 3 wells are geohydrologically interconnected considering lowered specific capacity comprising influence of additional drawdown effect by other 2 wells compared to single well test. Response time effect during single well test shows that dorminant lineaments are more expandable to other geological structures. The other one is the case of 28% increasing of groundwater productivity for domestic use by hydrofracturing.

  • To increase the yield from groundwater wells in various rock types by hydrofracturing, tests of 12 wells were carried out as a part of sustainable groundwater development and artificial recharge project. Test wells are selected 5 wells in Jurassic granites, 2 wells in Cretaceous volcanics, 4 wells in Cretaceous sedimentary rocks and one well in Pre-Cambrian gneiss. The results show that specific capacity of II wells increased about 7% to 366%, while a well in Cretaceous sedimentary rock decreased about 43.4% owing to plugging of fault clay. Meanwhile, impact distances influenced due to hydrofracturing ranged from 5.4 m to 82.7 m from the test wells, actual drawdown data measured during the pumping test after hydrofracturing are more or less decreased and reveals balanced drawdown.

  • In order to establish the in-situ application of the artificial storage and recovery (ASR) technology which is used the property of the aquifer storage of groundwater. We carried out to the in-situ experiments such as borehole TV logging, pumping test and artificial hydraulic fracturing in volcanic island, Ulleungdo. In-situ experiments were conducted to divide the before- and after-hydraulic fracturing. Pumping test was achieved to confirm the two fracture zones, GL-13m and GL-21m, which are determined by the borehole TV logging. From the results of the before- and after-pumping tests, the hydraulic connectivity was confirmed to locate at GL-13m in the residual deposit zone of pumice media as alluvium. However, in the bedrock tone at GL-21m the hydraulic connectivity could be considered to faulty. Consequently, in this study area the artificial recharge has a little unsatisfied to geo-structural condition and desired to more detail investigation works.

  • The purpose of this study is to ensure microseismic data acquisition technique for hydraulic fracturing imaging at the site of shale gas development. For this, microseismic data acquisition was performed during hydraulic fracturing and artificial blasting at a site bearing shale layers. Measured microseismic event data during the hydraulic fracturing have the very small amplitude of 0.001 mm/sec ~ 0.003 mm/sec and the frequency contents of 5 Hz ~ 20 Hz range. Meanwhile microseismic event data acquired during artificial blasting have the bigger amplitude (0.011 mm/sec ~ 0.302 mm/sec) than hydraulic fracturing event data and their frequency contents have the range of 5 Hz ~ 2 kHz. For microseismic data acquisition design, the selection of appropriate instrumentation including sensors and the recording system, the determination of sensor array and the deployment range were investigated based on the theoretical data and field application experiences.

  • The shale gas is emerging as one of the oil and gas resources which can replace the traditional oil and gas resources. As the shale layer where the shale gas is deposited has low permeability, the hydrofracturing method is required to improve the productivity. This study is designed to conduct the laboratory hydrofracturing test on the samples which are modeled after the drilling hole having the general drilling hole and spiral groove. And compare the initial fracturing pressure and fluid contact between them in order to the result of the hydrofracturing depending on the shape of the drilling hole. In addition, the results were compared with the numerical modeling values from 3DEC and they were also compared with the data from the advance researches. It was found from the study that rather than the contact area of the high pressures water, the force concentration depending on the form of guide hole was more effective in the hydrofracturing.

  • The hydraulic fracturing developed to improve permeability of tight reservoir is one of key stimulation technologies for developing unconventional resources such as shale gas and deep geothermal energy. The experimental study was conducted to improve disadvantage of hydraulic fracturing which has simple fracture pattern and poor fracturing efficiency. The fracturing experiments was conducted for tight rock using various fracturing fluids, water, N2, and CO2 and the created fracture pattern and fracturing efficiency was analyzed depending on fracturing fluids. The borehole pressure increased rapidly and then made fractures for hydraulic fracturing with constant injection rate, however, gas fracturing shows slowly increased pressure and less fracture pressure. The 3D tomography technic was used to generate images of induced fracture using hydraulic and gas fracturing. The stimulated reservoir volume (SRV) was estimated increment of 5.71% (water), 12.72% (N2), and 43.82% (CO2) respectively compared to initial pore volume. In addition, permeability measurement was carried out before and after fracturing experiments and the enhanced permeability by gas fracturing showed higher than hydraulic fracturing. The fracture conductivity was measured by increasing confining stress to consider newly creating fracture and closing induced fracture right after fracturing. When the confining stress was increased from 2MPa to 10MPa, the initial permeability was decreased by 89% (N2) and 50% (CO2) respectively. This study shows that the gas fracturing makes more permeability enhancement and less reduction of induced fracture conductivity than hydraulic fracturing.

  • The fracturing by liquid carbon dioxide ($LCO_2$) as a fracking fluid has been an alternative to mitigate the environmental issues often caused by the conventional hydraulic fracking since it facilitates the fluid permeation owing to its low viscosity. This study presents how $LCO_2$ injection influences the breakdown pressure, acoustic emission, and fracture morphology. Three fracturing fluids such as $LCO_2$, water, and oil are injected with different pressurization rate to the synthetic and porous mortar specimens. Also, the shale which has been a major target formation in conventional fracking practices is also tested to examine the failure characteristics. The results show that $LCO_2$ injection induces more tortuous and undulated fractures, and particularly the larger fractures are developed in cases of shale specimen. On the other hand, the relationship between the fracturing fluids and the breakdown pressure shows opposite tendency in the tests of mortar and shale specimens.
