  • This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of Italian ryegrass cultivars for salt tolerance under in vitro condition. Italian ryegrass cultivars such as Greenfarm, Florida80, Kowinearly, and Hwasan101 were tested for their tolerance to various sodium chloride levels (0, 50, 150, 250, and 350 mM). The seed germination, growth, and activities of antioxidant enzymes were investigated under salt treatment. Physiological traits such as seed germination percentage, germination period, shoot and root length, and dry weight were suppressed under entire salt stress conditions. The results indicated that the highest germination percentage and shoot and root length were recorded at normal conditions. Increased sodium chloride levels caused a significant reduction in the seed germination and growth rate. Among the four tested cultivars, Italian ryegrass 'Hwasan101' could be considered as salt tolerant owing to its higher germination percentage, better seedling growth and antioxidant activities under salinity stress, whereas Greenfarm cultivar was more sensitive. The selection of Italian ryegrass cultivars for greater tolerance to saline environment would allow greater productivity from large saline lands.

  • Morphological characteristics of the cross-bred $F_1$ hybrid between female Paralichthys olivaceus and male Platichthys stellatus were studied. The hybrids showed common biological characteristics of both parents, but showed more morphological similarity to P. stellatus than P. olivaceusin the following biometries: higher ratios of body length to body height (56.3%), head length to snout length (20.6%), and head length to upper jaw length (34.2%). They also showed some significant biometric characteristics similar to P. stellatus, such as ratios of predorsal length (10.5%), prepectoral length (32.2%), preventral length (29.8%), and preanal length (28.0%) to body length. The hybrids had black spots on the dark brownish-green area near the eyes, and they lacked the small bony tubercles that area characteristic of Platichthys stellatus. The hybrids had unique bands: 6~20 bands on the dorsal fin and 5~10 bands on the anal fin that gradually lost their coloration towards the fin margins. The number of fin rays were 60~66 for dorsal fin, 40~51 for anal fin, 18~21 for caudal fin, and 11~12 for pectoral fin. The gills of the hybrids contained 13~18 gill rakers and 73~98 gill filaments. The vertebrae of the hybrids numbered 34~37, with 2~3 vertebrae fused from the start of the caudal vertebrae.

  • The endemic Korean stumpy bullhead Pseudobagrus brevicorpus is a first-grade endangered wild fish as designated by the Ministry of Environment of Korea. As part of its restoration and proliferation effort, a histological study of this fish was carried out to investigate sex differentiation and gonadal development based on F1 generation individuals obtained by artificial breeding. On days 4~5 after hatching, a pair of genital ridges including clusters of primordial germ cells was observed between the gut and the mesonephric duct. On days 20 after hatching, the ovary began to initially differentiate and contained early oocytes with chromatin-nucleolus and peri-nucleolus stages on days 30~40 after hatching. As yolk material accumulated after day 80 from hatching, the oocytes grew increasingly large and were surrounded by a distinct follicular layer. On days 306 after hatching, the oocytes grew toward a mature ovum. In the males, the testis was distinguished by emergence of spermatogonium cells on 25 days after hatching, and day 40 after hatching it contained a small number of seminal lobes forming cysts. From 173 days after hatching, the testis consisted of numerous enlarged seminal lobes including spermatocytes and spermatids. Over 14 months after hatching, some seminal lumens were filled with spermatozoa.

  • The new garden chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum Ramat.) cultivar 'Nuri Ball' was developed at Yesan Chrysanthemum Experiment Station of Chungcheongnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services in 2011. 'Nuri Ball' was bred through a cross between the '02-145-01' line as the female parent with yellow flower color and '02-04-32' as the male plant with white flower color in 2004. Three years of adaptation trials were conducted from 2006 to 2009 under natural conditions. This study compared the external shape type with that of 'White Miri' and conducted ploidy and RAPD (Random amplified polymorphic DNA) marker analyses. These tests showed that 'Nuri Ball' cultivar has its own characteristics compared with the control 'White Miri'. 'Nuri Ball' was a shrub type variety with semi-double flowers of 4.0 cm in width with white petals. It could produce 1025.2 flowers per plant in autumn. Compared with the control 'White Miri', 'Nuri Ball' was similar in terms of shape and color of flowers, but was different in flower size and number. The natural flowering time of 'Nuri Ball' was late September. It had very vigorous growth and an early budding plant. 'Nuri Ball' was demonstrated to be a new cultivar based on ploidy test and RAPD analysis. 'Nuri Ball' is intended for use as a bed chrysanthemum and expected to contribute to farm incomes in landscaping.
