  • A sheet type of green body was made with the mixture of 60 wt% red clay, 20 wt% fly ash, and 20 wt% stone sludge. Indentations were made on the surfaces of sheets to investigate fracture rate of 1 to 5 mm artificial light-weight aggregates by various drying, breaking, and forming methods. Drying methods of green bodies were natural, electric oven, microwave, and fast drying by torch. Breaking methods of green bodies were ballmill Ⅰ, ballmill Ⅱ, free dropping in the box, and mechanical breaking with roller mill. The depth and width of indent on the surface of the sheet were varied and the thickness of green bodies was also changed to investigate effects of indentation on fracture rates. The highest fracture rate of 42 % among the various drying methods was obtained by microwave drying for 210 sec and the highest fracture rate of 65 % among the various breaking method was obtained by ballmill Ⅱ method. In forming method, an yield of larger aggregates than Ф = 5 mm decreased and that of smaller aggregates than Ф = 5 mm in creased with increasing depth of indentation (only in 3 mm thick green body)and with increasing thickness of green body. The size of aggregates was most homogeneous (by judging from the measurement of aspect ratio of 1 to 5 mm aggregates.) when 3 mm thick green body was rapidly dried by torch and was broken by ballmill Ⅱ method.

  • For the manufacturing lightweight fine aggregate, clay and waste material was formed by pelletizer. The fine aggregate of 1-5 mm diameter was formed by diameter 76 cm pelletizer disc. Pelletization variables were : (1) pelletizer disc angle, (2) speed of revolution of pelletizer, (3) added pelletization time. Green and sintered aggregate were measured specific gravity, absorption rate and average size. The optimum condition were found that the pelletization variables were angle at $70^{\circ}$, speed of revolution of pelletizer at 23.2 rpm, and water/solid ratio at 1/5. At these conditions, it was formed that fine aggregate green whose average size was $2.0{\sim}3.35mm$. Specific gravity and average size are increased with low angle of disc and fast revolution speed of disc. Specific gravity and average size were not distinctly influenced by added pelletization time. Sintered aggregate was distinctly influenced by properties of green.

  • The temperature-rasing sintering method was used in this study to fabricate the aggregates of uniform pore size and distribution containing reject ash occurred in the thermal power plant. The spheric green aggregates made of reject ash were put into the box furnace of 800~$1000^{\circ}C$, heated with a heating rate of 5~$15^{\circ}C$/min to 1200~$1275^{\circ}C$, sintered for 10 min and then discharged out of the furnace to the room temperature. The input temperature, heating rate and sintering temperature increased the bloating phenomenon of the specimen, and the sintering temperature among them was the most effective factor. The aggregate manufactured at $1275^{\circ}C$ had the specific gravity of about 1.0 and water absorption of 1~2%, and the pores of 500~1,000 ${\mu}m$ were uniformly distributed across the whole specimen. Especially, the aggregates fabricated using the temperature-rasing sintering method in this study showed an excellent bloating properties and uniform microstructure without black core phenomenon which is typical for the bloated ceramics synthesized by direct sintering method.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the engineering properties of no-fines con- crete, consisting only of coarse aggregate, cement and water. The used coarse aggregates were two, one is natural coarse aggregate grading 4.75~ lOmm, the other is synthetic lightweight coarse aggregate grading 3~8mm. The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1. The W/C ratio of each type was increased with increase of additional amount of coarse aggregate. 2. The unit weight of used ndtural coarse aggregate was shown 1.762~2.184g/cm$^3$, and synthetic lightweight coarse aggregate was shown 0.756 ~ 1 .348g/cm$^3$. 3. The ahsorption rate of used natural coarse aggregate was shown 8.4 ~ 9.4 %, and synthetic lightweight coarse aggregate was shown 17.0~42.4%. 4. The compressive, tensile and hending strength was decreased with increase of coarse aggregate, respectively. The compressive strength of natural coarse aggregate 1:3 was shown 309kg/cm$^2$. 5. The ultrasonic pulse velocity and dynamic medulus of elasticity of each type was de- creased with increase coarse aggregate, respectively. Also, the decreasing rate of the natural aggregate was larger than that of the synthetic lightweight coarse ag- gregate.

  • The artificial aggregates with dense surface layer (shell) was fabricated and the dependence of water emission rate upon the shell structures was studied. The EAF dust containing many flux components and waste white clay with ignition loss of above 48% were used as for liquid phase and gas forming agents during a sintering process respectively. In addition, the shell structure was modified with various processes and the modification effect on water emission rate was analyzed. The pores under $10{\mu}m$ were found in the sintered artificial light aggregates and disappeared by incorporating to a bigger pore during re-sintering. The water emission rate in an initial step depended on a void content of aggregates filled in a bottle rather than a shell structure. But, after 7 days where the water emission of the aggregate with a shell is above 40%, the shell of aggregates suppressed the water emission. The core of aggregates was exposed and most shell was lost when crushed to smaller size so, the ability for suppressing water emission of the crushed aggregates decreased. The activation energy for the water emission was $3.46{\pm}0.25{\times}10^{-1}$J/mol for the most specimens showing that the activation energy is irrelevant to the pore size distribution and shell structure.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve recycling rate of the waste glasses by investigating bloating mechanism. In this study, we use waste glass(W/G) and hard clay(H/C) as raw materials. The artificial lightweight aggregates were formed by plastic forming($\phi$=10 mm) and sintered by fast firing method at different temperatures(between 700 and $1250^{\circ}C$). The physical properties of the aggregates such as bulk specific gravity, adsorption and microstructure of surface and cross-section are investigated with the sintering temperature and rate of W/G-H/C contents. As the result of the bulk specific gravity graphs, we can found out the inflection point at content of W/G 60 wt%. From the microstructure images, we considered the artificial lightweight aggregates content of W/ G over 60wt% are distributed numerous micro-pores by organic oxidation without Black Core and the artificial lightweight aggregates of W/G below 60 wt% are distributed macro-pores with Black Core.

  • This study is to investigate experimentally the shear capacity of high-strength lightweight-aggregate reinforced concrete beams subjected to monotonic loading. Ten beams made of fly-ash artificial lightweight high-strength concrete were tested to determine their diagonal cracking and ultimate shear capacities. The variables in the test program were longitudinal reinforcement ratio; which variabled (between 0.83 and 1.66 percent), shear span-to-depth ratio (a/d=1.5, 2.5 and 3.5), and web reinforcement(0, 0.137, 0.275 and 0.554 percent). Six of the test beams had no web reinforcement and the other six had web reinforcement along the entire length of the beam. Most of beams failed brittly by distinct diagonal shear crack, and have reserved shear strength due to the lack of additional resisting effect by aggregate interlocking action after diagonal cracking. Test results indicate that the ACI Building Code predictions of Eq. (11-3) and (11-5) for lightweight concretes are unconservative for beams with tensile steel ratio of 1.66, a/d ratios greater than 2.5 without web reinforcement. Through a more rational approach to compute the contribution of concrete to the shear capacity, a postcracking shear strength in concrete is observed.

  • In this paper, the properties of reclaimed ash(RA) from various domestic thermal power plants(S, D and H) were analyzed, and the possibility of fabricating the artificial lightweight aggregate(ALA) using RA was studied. The chemical compositions of RA are similar to the clay, but it had higher concentrations of alkali earth metal oxides(CaO, MgO) and unburned-carbon. The TCLP(Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) results showed that the dissolution concentrations of heavy metal ions of RA were below the limitation defined by the enforcement regulation of wastes management law in Korea. The results of IC analysis showed that leaching concentration of $Cl^-$ ion was 124 ppm for RA of HN and ${SO_4}^{2-}$ ion was leached a few hundreds ppm for all RA in this study. The ALAs with various mass ratio of clay to reclaimed ash(RA:Clay = 7:3, 6:4, 5:5, 4:6, 3:7) were sintered with a electric muffle furnace at the temperature of $1050{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$. The specific gravity and water absorption(%) of the sintered ALAs were 1.1~1.8 and 10~30% respectively. The ALA sintered in the rotary kiln at $1125^{\circ}C$ showed a bulk density of 1.7 and water absorption of 15.2%.

  • The main objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of process variables which were forming ability, flow displacement, effective stress, effective strain, fluid vector and products defects on manufactured artificial lightweight aggregate made of both incinerated sewage sludge ash and clay by means of the numerical analysis of a rigid-plastic finite element method. CATIA (3D CAD program) was used for an extrusion metal mold design that was widely used in designing aircraft, automobile and metallic molds. A metal forming analysis program (ATES Co.) had a function of a rigid-plastic finite element method was used to analyze the program. The result of extrusion forming analysis indicated clearly that a shape retention of the manufactured artificial light-weight aggregate could be maintained by increasing the extrusion ratio (increasing compressive strength inside of extrusion die) and decreasing the die angle. The stress concentration of metal mold was increased by increasing an extrusion ratio, and it was higher in a junction of punch and materials, friction parts between a bottom of the punch and inside of a container, a place of die angle and a place of die of metal mold. Therefore, a heat treatment as well as a rounding treatment for stress distribution in the higher stress concentration regions were necessary to extend a lifetime of the metallic mold. A deformity of the products could have made from several factors which were a surface crack, a lack of the shape retention and a crack of inside of the products. Specially, the surface crack in the products was the most notably affected by the extrusion ratio.
