Several selected rice varieties Tong-il (Suweon #213-1), Jinheung, IR747, Suweon #229 and so forth were evaluated for their resistance to the striped rice borer, Cltilo suppressalis Walker. The resistance appears to be non-preference and antibiosis in nature. Under laboratory and greenhouse conditions, resistance to striped rice borer was manifested by the low larval weight, percentage of pupation and number of eggs recorded. In the cage test, varieties Suweon #240 and Shenshuraku appeared to be non-preferred by the borer moths for oviposition. Under field condition, variety Tetep received the lowest percentage of infested tillers.
Hirsutella subulata (Hyphomycetes) was observed for the first time on diseased larvae of Chilo suppressalis in Korea. This fungus formed slender and slightly attenuated synnemata consisting of closely bound, longitudinal hyphae on the insect larvae. Typical characteristics of this species are ellipsoid or broadly obovoid phialides with slender, needle-like necks and asymmetric conidia. It is very similar to H. barberi but can be distinguished by its asymmetrical conidia.
An intensive survey of rice insect pests and their natural enemies with special references on parasites of rice stem-borers was made during the last 5 years(1973-77). The results were obtained as follows: 1. 15 species of hymenopterous parasites from the rice stem-borers were identified; Trichogrammatidae-2 spp, Scelionidae-1 sp, Braconidae-5 spp, Ichneumonidae-7spp. 2. The two Trichogrammatids species, Apanteles chilonis and Microgaster russata are first records from Korea. 3. Museum presence specimens of the 3 species: Trichogramma chilonis, Eriborus terebrans and Gombrus ruficoxatus, we previously identified in Korea, could not be located in this periods of study.
1) These experiments were couducted to compare the effectiveness of with several new insccticides for the control of the rsce stem borer at Kimhae and Suwon in Korea from 1962 to 1963. 2) Gam ma-dol dusf and gramular were applied on the water surbul by hand and the other insecticides were sprayed on the leves of the paddy rice plaut by knap sack spayer(Table 1). 3) Gamma-dol was for the control of rice stem borers. more effective than other insecticidesused. timing for the applioation of$\gamma-dol$ was 10 days before hatching from the eggs. 4) There were no any significant differences in the effect of$\gamma-dol$ to the rice stem borer in both areas of Kimhae and Suwon.
The entomopathogenic nematodes, Steinernema carpocapsae and Heterorhabditis bacteriophoTa, were laboratory tested for the control of rice stem borer Chilo suppressalis. When 8 cm long of two rice stems infected by rice stem borers were treated with S. carpocapsae by spray application to the concentrations of 250, 500, 1,000, or 2,000 nematodes/ml, 68.6 $\pm$ 10.0-94.9 $\pm$ 2.6 % control was obtained. When 8 cm long of rice stems infected by rice stem borers were treated with H. bacteriophoTa by spray application to the concentrations of 100, 200, 400, or 800 nematodes/ ml, 91.4 $\pm$ 0.7-100 % control was obtained. On the other hand, when 8 cm long of three rice stems were treated with H. bacteriophora by dipping application to the concentrations of 100 or 200 nematodes/ml, 46.2 $\pm$ 4.7-63.1 $\pm$ 4.7 % control was obtained. Because the moist habitat of rice stems were favorable to nematode survival and searching abilities, entomopathogenic nematode, were confirmed to be a potential biological control agents against rice stem borers.
Four experiments were carried out under farmer's field conditions to determine economic threshold levels of major rice pests aad attempt a reduction in the number of insecticide applications. In the experiments were included check treatments, insecticide schedules representing the official recommendations to farmers, and several corrective treatments. A careful record was kept of insect pest densities and disease incidence. i) In the north at Suweon and Icheon where Chilo suppresalis. (Walk.), the striped rice borer, was active in the first generation, no significant yield differences were obtained between plots receiving several insecticide applications and those left totally unprotected. The mean yields were high (5.2-7.6t/ha). ii) First generation borer activity rising to $8.6\%$ injured tillers was below the economic threshold since no yield reduction was recorded in either japonica varieties or the high-yielding Tongil variety. iii) Evidence was obtained thst berer damage was made good by replacement of infested tillers (compensatory growth), C. suppressalis populations were always low in the second generation. iv) The experimental results obtained at Suweon and Icheon do not justify the present official recommendations of 6-7 pesticide applications. v) further south at Iri a substantial yield reduction occurred due to an early outbreak of stripe disease transmitted by Laodelphax striatellus (Fallen), the small brown planthopper; a mean of 1-2 individuals/hill was recorded immediately after transplanting. C. suppressalis probably contributed to this yield reduction. vi) Several applications against the vector failed to prevent the rapid spread of stripe to the susceptible variety in the Iri experiment: in surrounding fields the resistant Tonsil varivety was ralatively unaffected. vii) Pests of lesser importance were Nephotettix cinctieps (Uhler), Nilaparvata lugens (Stil), Sogatella furcifera (Horv..), and leaf miners.
The average weight of larvae, the percentage of survival larvae and the percentage of moth emergence in first and second generation of striped rice borer showed lower values in Akibare(Japonica variety) compared with those in Milyang 23 (Indica variety). At higher nitrogen level the larvae weight in second generation of striped borer was increased. The percentage of survival larvae in second generation was gradually decreased by applying the silicate fertilizer in both cultivars. The moth emergences in both generations of striped rice borer were also lower at high levels of silicate fertilizer. The percentage of white head of rice plant was reduced by the application of silicate fertilizer. The ratio of SiO$_2$ to T-N of the rice stem was related negatively with the percentage of survival larvae and the moth emergence in second generation of striped rice borer, and also with the percentage of white head of rice plant.
This experiment was conducted to find out the simultaneous control effect of granulated insecticides on the several major rice insect pests in Korea. The granulated insecticides used were Terracur P$5\%$ (one of the phosphoric insecticides), Lebaycid $5\%$, and Sang-gamma (gamma-BHC) $6\%$. Those insecticides were broadcasted by hand on the paddy field at the ratio of 3kg. in June and 4kg. in August per 10 a, and the date of insecticidal application was based on the maximum moth occurrence of the rice stem borer in 1969. The rice insect pests tested in this study were rice stem borer (Chilo suppressalis W.), green rice leafhopper (Nephotettix bipunctatus cincticeps U.), smiller brown planthopper (Laodelphax striatellus F.), and white back planthopper (Sogotella furcifera H.). For the study of residual effectiveness of the insecticides, the rice stem borer larvae just hatched from the eggs were installed on the sheath of rice plants collected from the paddy field after insecticidal treatment, and the mortality was made at 48 hours after installation. High mortality was observed in Terracur P and Sang-gamma treatments and low mortality in Lebaycid treatment. The duration of residual effects giving about 50% mortality was about 14 days in Sang-gamma and about 6 days in Terracur P treatments. The study on the effectiveness of the insecticides to the rice stem borer in the paddy field was made by the number of dead blades and white heads of the rice plants injured by the larvae, and the number of survival larvae in the straws after crop harvest. The order of insecticidal effectiveness to the rice stem borer was Terracur P=Sang-gamm>Lebaycid. The study on the effectiveness of the insecticides to the leafhoppers and planthoppers in the paddy field was made by the population density by sweeping (5 times) at the given day intervals after treatments. Terracur P was highly effective for the control of the green rice leafhoppers and Lebaycid was moderately effective, but Sang-gamma seemed not to be effective. The effectiveness of the insecticides tested to the planthoppers was not clear, and it seemed to related with the low insect population density. Study on the determination of proper timing of insecticidal application was not also made clear, and it seemed to be short in the range of day intervals in the insecticidal application. For the study on the control effects of the rice insect pests, rice yield per 100 hills per plot was observed. There was no statistically significant difference among the treatments in rice yields, but the order of yield (Terracur P>Sang-gamma>Lebaycid>Control) was paralleled with the tends of control effects above mentioned. In a view point of simultaneous control of the rice stem borers and green rice leafhoppers by the application of granulated insecticides, Terracur P and Lebaycid were more effective than Sang-gamma which have been used.
This experiment has been carried out to establish the most effective rearing method of rice stemborer, Chilo suppressalis (Walker) on artificial diets under the aseptic condition. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. Semi·synthetic diet was giving better results in the weight of matured larvae (96.4mg), emerging rate$(96.7\%)$ and number of egg masses (2.6) than other diets studied. 2. Number of egg masses and hatching rate were significantly increased on the semi-synthetic diet and chemically defned diet, and it may be due to the choline chloride in the diets, 3. Rice seedling was used as a convenient food material. However, it requires more labours and causes more damages of larvae in replacement of fresh seedlings. 4. A different result in larval weight and pupation rate was observed between simplified diet no. 1 and diet added with chlorella. 5. Simplified diet resulted in low hatchability in the second generation, which may be due to the mulnutrition of the diet for adults. 6. The pupation rate was significantly decreased by infection of microorganisms on matured larvae.
