The long-term tend an pattern changes of Chilo suppressalis(Walker) occurrence in Suwon were analyzed and the forecasting models for spring emergence of C. suppressalis in Suwon were developed. From 1965 to 196, the population dynamics of C. suppressalis in Suwon shows a cyclic fluctuation with one large peak an one small peak, and its periodicity was ca. 36 generations(18 years). C. suppressalis population dynamics in Suwon was characterized as controlled by the endogenous dynamics dictated by the 1st order negative feedback mechanism (fast density dependence). The dynaics mechanism of C. suppressalis populations was not changed although its population density decreased drastically over the years. Using th dta of C. suppressalis spring occurrence in Suwon, forecasting models for spring emergence of C.supressalis were developed based on temperature-dependent development model or degree days. In general, these models well described the C. suppressalis spring emergence pattern in Suwon. Also, forecasting problems in spring moth emergence related with C. suppressalis population dynamics were discussed.
Miscanthus are perennial rhizomatous grasses and considered as an ideal cellulosic bioenergy crop. Recently, it was reported that Miscanthus was damaged by the larvae of rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis Walker, one of the most destructive pests of rice in Korea since the 1960s. This study was thus conducted to evaluate the insecticidal effects against rice stem borer in the Miscanthus cultivation fields for two years. The experiment consisted of four chemical agent plots, one environment-friendly agent plot, and untreated plot. Untreated plot showed significantly high damage of 50%, while Buprofezin Tebufenozide and Carbosulfan Methoxyfenozide treatment plots showed low damage rate of 2% with low larvae density of 1 and $2.3larvae\;m^{-2}$, respectively. Damage rates of Tebufenozide, ChlorantraniliproleIndoxacarb, and environment-friendly agent(MatrineWood vinegar solution) were 15, 26, and 18%, respectively, which were lower than that of untreated plot but higher than those of Buprofezin Tebufenozide and Carbosulfan Methoxyfenozide. In conclusion, rice insecticides were effective against rice stem borer in Miscanthus field. In particular, the treatments with Buprofezin Tebufenozide and Carbosulfan Methoxyfenozide showed excellent control effects with control value of 93.3 and 95.2. However, further studies with different types of insecticides should be carried out for the selection of insecticides with more effective control of rice stem borer.

An artificial diet containing wheat germ, soybean, corn, yeast, sucrose, casein, cholesterol, 𝛽-sitosterol, and dry Miscanthus sacchariflorus stem powder was developed for rearing Chilo suppressalis (Crambidae) larvae. Neonate larvae were individually raised on the diet till adult emergence at 25℃ and 15:9 h light:dark photoperiod. In the results, the pupation and the emergence rates were 82.2% and 98.6%, respectively. The mean developmental periods of female and male larvae were 34.6 days and 31.0 days, respectively, whereas the pupal periods of female and male were 8.9 days and 9.7 days, respectively. Those periods were significantly different between genders. The mean pupal weights of female and male were 75.0 mg and 57.0 mg, respectively, with significant difference.
The experiments were canied out to investigate the toxicological characteristics of Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs) such as chlorfluazuron, diflubenzuron, pyriproxyfen and tebufenozide against the various stages of instars of fall webwom (Hyphantrio cuneo Dmy) and nce stem borer (Chiio suppressaiis Walker). In fall webwom, the tolerance ratio m) with the 2nd-6th instars, as cornpared with LCso of the 1st instar, ranged 107-358, 1.13-6.06, 1.02-3.23 and 1.05- 6.64, respectively. In the rice stern borer, the TR of the 3rd instar, as compared with LCso of the 1st instar, to chlorfluazuron, diflubenzuron, pyriproxyfen and tebufenoz~de were 2.86, 260, 19.80 and 15.30, respectively.
This study was conducted to investigate the changes in moth occurrence of striped rice barer, Chilo suppressalis (Walker), in relation to climatic factors, rice varieties, and cultural practices. The light trap data from 41 forecasting stations for 14 years from 1966 to 1979 were analyzed by means of the changes in the time and amount of borer occurrence in connection with the introduction of new rice varieties, the accumulated effective day-degree and its variation for completing one generation, and the climatic factors affecting the moth occurrence. The total number of moths caught by light traps in both spring and summer generations were considerably decreased with the wide cultivation of new rice varieties. In fact, the spring moths were remarkably decreased since the new varieties were introduced in 1972. The occurrence ratio of summer moths against the preceeding spring moths was higher in the middle region and middle southern mountainous area than the other regions. Its high ratio of regions was annually expanded from the middle region to the southern region. The $50\%$ emergence dates of both generations were later in the southeastern region than in the middle region. The ecological characteristics were clearly shown between the northern and southern region of Chupungryeong in terms of the occurrence of summer moths, the ratio of occurrence of summer moths to the preceeding spring moths, and $50\%$ emergence dates of the summer moths during the years of $1977\~1979$. The ratio of the summer moth occurrence to the preceeding generation was negatively correlated with the average temperature in lune and July, respectively, and the average precipitation in late June. The ratio of spring moth occurrence over the preceeding generation was positively correlated with the average temperature in September, October, November, and March, respectively, whereas it was negatively correlated with the average precipitation in early September and March, and the average humidity in early May. The effective day-degree for one generation was in the range from 600 to 900 DD at upper threshold $30^{\circ}C$ and lower threshold $10^{\circ}C$.

The rice stem borer (Chilo suppressalis Walker) was one of the most destructive pest of rice for the 1960s and 1970s in Korea. Recently, it is newly recognized as a potential risk factor to the biomass yield of bioenergy crops. The current research was firstly conducted to investigate overwintering larvae population density and pattern of rice stem borer attacking Miscanthus sacchariflorus cv. Geodae 1 which is referred to as an ideal lignocellulosic bioenergy crop in Korea. Population density of larvae per $1m^2$ in stems and rhizomes at the Miscanthus experimental plots and rates of damage (wormhole, abscission) of M. sacchariflorus cv. Goedae 1 were investigated from October 2012 to March 2013. The population of larvae per $1m^2$ in stems of Miscanthus were 23, 4, 1, and 1 in October, November, December 2012, and January 2013, respectively. Over the same period, the population of larvae in basal stem rots and rhizomes were increased, whereas decreased in stems. Interestingly, the positions of larvae for overwintering in Miscanthus were confirmed to 5~10 cm below the soil surface such as basal stem rot and rhizome, whereas the most common overwintering position known in rice is a part of stem on the ground such as rice straw and rice stubble. It would suggest that the larvae gradually moved to bottom of stems and rhizomes in soil in line with decline in temperature. Moreover, the damage rates of stems per $1m^2$ were up to more than 50% in some places. In conclusion, this might be the first report that rice stem borer could affect the productivity of biomass of Miscanthus in case of mass cultivation. Moreover, it should be necessary to make a decision in insect control management for this bioenergy feedstock and other related crops.
Studies were conducted to investigate the incidense of insect pests in transplanted and direct seeded paddy fields in southern region of Korea. Population dencities of the rice green leafhopper (RGLH: Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler) and rice leaffolder (RLF: Cnaphalocroch medinalh Guenee) were higher in machine transplanted than in direct seeded, but the brown planthopper (BPH: Nilaparvata lugens Stal) and smaller brown planthopper (SBPH: Laodelphax striatellus Fallen) were abundant in direct seeded. However, no significant difference was found between machine transplanted and direct seeded fields in the incidense of rice stem borer (RSB: Chilo suppressalis Walker), whiteback planthopper (WBPH: Sogatella furcifera Horvath), and rice stem magot (RSM: C'hlorops oryzae Matsumura). Occurrence of rice key pests were affected more by transplanting time than other cultural practices. Later transplanting induced higher populations of BPH, WBPH, SBPH, RGLH. However, RSB and RLF caused higher damage in earlier transplanted paddy field.
