  • In contrast to ganglion of the soft tissue, periosteal ganglion occurring within or beneath the periosteum is a rare disorder. The differential diagnosis includes periosteal chondroma, lipoma, giant cell tumor of tendon sheath and periosteal osteosarcoma. Most common location for periosteal ganglion is the tibia, followed by radius, femur and ulna. To our knowledge, only 1 case of periosteal ganglion of the fibula has been reported in the literature. We report a case of periosteal ganglion of the distal fibula in a thirty-year-old woman treated with excision of the cyst and the adjacent periosteum.

  • Tectaria fuscipes (Wall. ex Bedd.) C. Chr. (Baek-Rok-Go-Sa-Ri) is newly reported in Korea. This species belongs to the genus Tectaria Cav. of the family Tectariaceae Panigrahi. Thus far, no taxa of Tectariaceae have been reported in Korea. Tectaria fuscipes is characterized by its suberect to ascending rhizome, dimorphic or subdimorphic fronds, and free veins. The species was found on the southwestern slopes of Mt. Halla on Jeju Island, where it grows in sun near a small cave. It also occurs in southern China and in Taiwan. In Japan, eight species of the genus Tectaria have been reported, but T. fuscipes has yet to be recorded there. Jeju Island is the northeastern-most limit of the known range of this species.

  • To estimate the genetic characteristics and cumulative power of discrimination (CPD) within Korean native commercial chicken, we used a total of 395 genomic DNAs from six breeds population (Korean Native Red chicken: R, Korean Native Yellow chicken: Y, Korean native Commercial Chicken: C, Ogal chicken: S, Hy-Line Brown: H, White Leghorn: W). Genetic diversity indices including mean allele number among loci, unbiased heterozygosity ($h_i$) within locus, effective number of alleles ($N_e$) and polymorphism information content (PIC) as well as the unbiased average heterozygosity (H) among loci in the populations were calculated using the generated allele frequencies by each marker. Frequencies of microsatellites markers were used to estimate heterozygosities and genetic distances. The nearest distance (0.119) was observed between the C and Y strains. The generated unbiased average heterozygosity among loci in each population was integrated to the global formula of CPD and the result demonstrated that the CPD within the six chicken populations was 99.461%.

  • Benign intraosseous osteolytic lesions of the glenoid are very rare. The present study reports on three cases of symptomatic intraosseous osteolytic lesions of the glenoid in which surgical interventions were made. Of the three, two cases presented with intraosseous ganglion and one case with fibrous dysplasia. In all the cases, the lesion was located at the posteroinferior portion of the glenoid, and it seems to be related to posterior shoulder pain. If intraosseous osteolytic lesions have symptoms or the risk for chondral defects or cortical breakage, surgical intervention is needed and bone curettage with or without bone grafting will be a useful treatment option.

  • Two adult specimens of heterophyid cuke, which belong to the genus Stictodora, were collected from the stool of a 24-year old man after chemotherapy. The nukes were morphologically characterized by their small body siRe (0.90~0.98mm long and 0.38 mm wide) and peculiar structure of ventrogenital sac with armed gonotyl (with about 12~I5 spines) not enveloping genital pore. Species identification is deferred until more worms are obtained, although they closely resemble Stictadora fuscatum (Onji and Nishio, 1916). The Patient used to eat raw flesh of mullets and gobies, which are regarded as the infection source of Stictodora sp., together with 3 other kinds of heterophyids described elsewhere. This is the first record of human Stictodora infection in the literature.
