The design of composite joint is important research area because they are often the weakest areas in composite structures. In this paper, the specimens with three paste thickness (0.2 mm, 0.6 mm, 4 mm) were manufactured in secondary bonding method and tested in two different loading direction condition. Also, the failure index of the L-type stiffener was calculated by the finite element method and compared with experimental results.

Experiments were conducted to investigate the failure and strengths of carbon composite-to-aluminum single-lap bonded joints with 5 different bonding lengths. Joint specimens were fabricated to have secondary bonding of laminate and aluminum with a film type adhesive, FM73m. Tested joints have the bonding strengths between the values of aluminum-to-aluminum joints and composite-to-composite joints. In the joints with bonding length-to-width ratio smaller than 1, the strength decreases as the bonding length increases. In the joints with the ratio larger than 1, however, the strength converges to a constant value. Final failure mode of all the specimens was delamination. To use the maximum strength of the adhesive, it is important to design the joint to have strong resistance to delamination.

Adherend samples were made from unsaturated polyester and woven and mat glass fibers by the hand layup and vacuum methods. The mechanical properties of the adhesive, composite adherends, and terminal-joint and secondary-joint specimens were determined experimentally. Combinations of the experiment results and the bonding theory were used in this study. The maximum and average shear stresses were calculated based on the maximum tensile force and geometry parameters of the joint specimens. The results of the maximum and average shear stresses were compared and evaluated for six joints. The results showed that the grinding and grind/acetone joint had the highest strength among three types of terminal-joints. Similarly, the mat-mat and mat-woven joints had the highest strength among three types of secondary-joints with the same value. Conversely, no treatment and woven-woven bonding had very low strength. In each case, failure occurred always at two ends and then moved toward the middle area of the overlap length.

Failure strengths of composite single-lap adhesive joints were investigated with various parameters such as manufacturing method, overlap length and adherend thickness. A total of 335 single-lap joint specimens were tested under tension. Specimens were fabricated with 4 different manufacturing processes; cocuring without and with adhesive, secondary bonding and co-bonding. Each manufacturing process has 5 different overlap lengths and 4 different thicknesses, respectively. As expected, failure strength is higher in thicker adherend joints and lower in larger overlap length specimens. Interesting result is that the secondary bonded joints show the higher strength than the cobonded and cocured joints with adhesive, and give close or even higher strength compared with non-adhesive cocured case.
The effect of moisture contents by salt water on the strength of composite single-lap bonded joints is investigated. The specimens were manufactured in an autoclave by secondary bonding and immersed in the 3.5% salt water of $71^{\circ}C$ for different durations to get various moisture contents; 0, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0%(saturation). A total of 80 joint specimens were tested for 5 different moisture contents and 2 temperature environments. Test results show that while the joint strengths after the saturation of moisture decrease compared to those of dry ones, the strengths of the pre-saturated joint up to 1.0% of moisture content increase in both room and elevated temperature conditions. It is also shown that the strengths of joints tested in elevated temperature are slightly higher than the strength in room temperature by 2-5% until the moisture content reaches 1 %. In contrast, the high temperature strength of the saturated joint is about 5% lower than the room temperature strength.

In this paper, composite panels with hat-shaped stiffeners were made using the co-curing, co-bonding and secondary bonding methods. Co-curing is a manufacturing method in which the hat part and the plate are cured simultaneously in a manner that is more cost effective than other methods. Co-bonding is a method in which the stacked prepregs are cured with other cured parts, and secondary bonding is a method in which cured parts are bonded together using an adhesive. A rubber mold was manufactured for co-curing of composite panel with hat-shaped stiffeners, and finite element analyses were done to evaluate the expanding pressure of the rubber mold consistent with the curing temperature. The manufactured panels were also evaluated using a 3-D measurement tester and an ultrasonic tester. Pull-off tests were performed to evaluate their mechanical properties.
A study has been made to establish an optimum condition in the surface treatment and curing method that is important for the fabrication of Al 7075/CFRP laminates. PAA(Phosphoric Acid Anodizing) provided a good adhesive strength and FPL(Sulfuric / Sodium Dichromate Acid Etching) had a similar adhesive strength with PAA. On the other hand, the poor adhesive strength was shown on vapor degrease and CAA(Chromic Acid Anodizing). By using the atomic force microscope(AFM), it was found that the PAA oxide surface obviously had a greater degree of microroughness as compared to vapor degrease, CAA and FPL treated surfaces. These results support the concept of a mechanical interlocking of the adhesive with-in the oxide pores as the predominant adhesion mechanism. In curing methods, the adhesive strength of co-curing method was higher than that of secondary curing method. With respect to stability of specimen shape, the secondary curing method was better than co-curing method. DMA(Dynamic Mechanical Analysis) test revealed $T_g$ in curing times over 60 min is nearly same, so it is estimated they will have similar degree of curing and joint durability in using FM300M adhesive film.

Pouch film is manufactured by laminating aluminum foil, polyamide film and polypropylene film with an adhesive or extrusion resin. However, a surface treatment is required for the aluminum because bonding does not occur easily between the aluminum foil and the polymer film. Thus, for this study, surface treatment experiments were performed in order to confirm the effect on adhesion strength. First, a variety of surface treatment solutions were coated on aluminum foil, and contact angle and surface morphology analysis was carried out for the surface-treated aluminum. For lamination of the surface-treated aluminum foil with polyamide film, a polyurethane base adhesive was prepared for the adhesive strength test specimens. The adhesive strength between the aluminum foil and the polyamide film of the resulting specimens was measured (UTM). With such an experiment, it was possible to evaluate the effect on adhesive strength of the various surface treatments.

The hygrothermal effect on the strength of composite single-lap bonded joints were investigated. The specimens were manufactured in four different manufacturing methods and tested in three different environmental conditions. An interesting result is that the strengths of the joints in the elevated temperature and wet (ETW) conditions were found to be 11 ~ 23% higher than those in the room temperature and dry (RTD) environment. In contrast, the strengths of the joints in the cold temperature and dry (CTD) condition decrease by 8 ~ 21% compared to those in the RTD environment except for cobonded joint. The difference in the strength by testing environments is mainly attributed to the change of the material properties of adhesive by temperature and moisture.

The objective of this study is to investigate appropriate bonding methods of solar cells in order to apply solar cells, which have been receiving particular attention as a renewable energy due to fossil energy depletion and environment issues, to composite structures. Back-contact solar cells with approximately 24.2% energy conversion efficiency were used in this study. Since silicon-based solar cells are mechanically fragile, the secondary-bonding methods using adhesive were examined in this study. The experiment was conducted with three kinds of bonding materials such as EVA film, Resin film and elastic adhesive. The performance of solar cells for three types of adhesives under mechanical loading on test specimens is conducted. In addition, the measuring equipment was designed to evaluate the performance of the solar cells under mechanical loading in real time and the fracture characteristics depending on bonding materials were evaluated. The reason decreasing solar cells efficiency were analyzed and considered by Fractography. The results show that the solar cell performance is largely affected by bonding techniques. Moreover, the bonding method using elastic adhesive shows best solar cell efficiency.
