Effects of plasma insulin, and leptin on fat traits in Hanwoo (Korean cattle) (혈중 인슐린 및 렙틴이 한우 지방형질에 미치는 효과)

  • The objective of this study was to examine the effect of plasma leptin and insulin concentrations on fat traits in Hanwoo. If a biological indicator such as plasma leptin and insulin was identified, it would be a useful biological marker that can be predicted marbling score in young animal. The relationship between plasma hormone (leptin and insulin) and fat traits (marbling score, back fat thickness and P8 fat thickness) was investigated. The experiment studies 100 Hanwoo that were randomly sampled from Hanwoo Experimental Station Herd. The concentration of plasma insulin was significantly associated with marbling score (P=0.02) but was not significantly with back fat thickness (P=0.07) and P8 fat thickness (P=0.09). Statistical model determinant that plasma insulin concentration account for phenotypes was moderate on marbling score (5%), back fat thickness (3%) and P8 fat thickness (9%). On the other hand, plasma leptin concentration was significantly associated with marbling score (P=0.03) and back fat thickness (P=0.02), but was not significant on P8 fat thickness (0.07). Statistical model determinant that plasma leptin concentration accounting for phenotypes was moderate effect on marbling score (3%) and back fat thickness (2%), but it has a slightly bigger effect on P8 fat thickness (7%). In conclusion, the plasma leptin and insulin seems to have an effect on fat traits (marbling score, backfat thickness and P8 fat thickness) in Hanwoo.

  • 질화갈륨(GaN)은 높은 전자이동도 및 높은 항복전계를 가지며 낮은 온저항으로 인하여 에너지효율이 우수하기 때문에 고출력 전력소자 분야에서 많은 관심을 받고 있다. GaN을 이용한 고출력 전력소자의 경우 상용화 수준에 근접할 만한 기술적 진보가 있었으나, 페르미 레벨 고정(Fermi-level pinning) 현상, 소자의 누설전류 등 아직 해결되어야 할 문제를 갖고 있다. 본 연구에서는 실리콘 기판 위에 성장된 GaN 에피탁시를 활용한 고출력 전력소자의 누설전류를 억제시키기 위해 오믹 접합 중 Au의 상호확산을 억제하는 중간층 금속(Mo or Ni)을 변화시켰으며 오믹 열처리 온도에 따른 특성을 비교 연구하였다. $Cl_2$$BCl_3$를 이용하여 0.6 ${\mu}m$ 깊이의 메사 구조가 활성영역을 형성하였고, Si 도핑된 n-GaN 위에 Ti/Al/Mo/Au (20/100/25/200 nm) 와 Ti/Al/Ni/Au (20/100/25/200 nm) 오믹 접합을 각각 설계, 제작하였다. 오믹 열처리시의 GaN 표면오염을 방지하기 위해 $SiO_2$ 희생층을 증착하였다. 오믹 접합 형성을 위해 각 750$^{\circ}C$, 800$^{\circ}C$, 850$^{\circ}C$에서 30초간 열처리를 진행 하였으며, 이후 6 : 1 BOE 용액으로 $SiO_2$ 희생층을 제거하였다. 750, 800, 850$^{\circ}C$에서 Ti/Al/Mo/Au 구조의 오믹 접합 저항은 각 2.56, 2.34, 2.22 ${\Omega}$-mm 이었으며, Ti/Al/Ni/Au 구조의 오믹 접합 저항은 각 43.72, 2.64, 1.86 ${\Omega}$-mm이었다. Isolation 누설전류를 측정하기 위해서 두 개의 오믹 접합 사이에 메사 구조가 있는 테스트 구조를 제안하였다. Isolation 누설전류는 Ti/Al/Mo/Au 구조에서 두 오믹 접합 사이의 거리가 25 ${\mu}m$이고 100 V일 때 750, 800, 850 $^{\circ}C$의 열처리 온도에서 각 1.25 nA/${\mu}m$, 2.48 nA/${\mu}m$, 8.76 nA/${\mu}m$이었으며, Ti/Al/Ni/Au 구조에서는 각 1.58 nA/${\mu}m$, 2.13 nA/${\mu}m$, 96.36 nA/${\mu}m$이었다. 열처리 온도가 증가하며 오믹 접합 저항은 감소하였으나 isolation 누설전류는 증가하였다. 750$^{\circ}C$ 열처리에서 오믹 접합 저항은Ti/Al/Mo/Au 구조가 Ti/Al/Ni/Au 구조보다 약 17배 우수하였고, 850$^{\circ}C$ 고온의 열처리 경우 Ti/Al/Mo/Au 구조의 isolation 누설전류는 8.76 nA/${\mu}m$로 Ti/Al/Ni/Au의 누설전류 96.36 nA/${\mu}m$보다 약 11배 우수하였다. Ti/Al/Mo/Au가 Ti/Al/Ni/Au 보다 오믹 접합 저항과 isolation 누설전류 측면에서 전력용 GaN 소자에 적합함을 확인하였다.

Effect of food waste properties on methane production (음식물쓰레기의 특성이 메탄생성량에 미치는 영향분석)

  • The buffer capacity of food waste lowers during the collecting and transportation period. Food waste usually shows deficiency of micro nutrients especially molybdenum(Mo) and cobalt(Co). Therefore, food waste can be considered as a good mixture of livestock waste to enhance methane production. The objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between properties of substrates (local food waste and livestock manure) and methane yields for successive anaerobic fermentation process and its stable management. Food wastes were taken at an intermediate storage or treatment system provided by eight local authorities (Gangnam, Gangdong, Gwanak, Guro, Dongjak, Songpa, Yeongdeungpo, and Younsan) in Seoul. The solid content and potential methane yield of food wastes were average of 16% and $446.6STP-m{\ell}/g-VS$ (range from 334.8 to $567.5STP-m{\ell}/g-VS$) respectively. As for the beef cattle manure, the solid content and potential methane yield had an average of 26% and $280.6STP-m{\ell}/g-VS$ respectively. Potential methane yield had a positive correlation with fat content, and hydrogen content and a negative correlation with carbohydrate content ($r^2>0.8$). Therefore, the potential methane yield can be predicted based on the substrate characterization results with reasonable accuracy. Further research may be needed to investigate the relation of the properties of the mixture substrate and methane production rate. The mixtures may include food waste, livestock waste, and bulking agents (saw dust, rice hull, or agricultural byproducts etc.) to determine best combination of these substrates for maximum methane production rate.

A Comparative Study of Flora and Vegetation Change before and after Forest Road Construction in the Research Site of Minjujisan (임도개설 전·후 식물상 및 식생변화 비교 연구 - 민주지산을 중심으로 -)

  • This study was conducted from 2012, which was a year before forest road construction in Minjujisan, to 2015 to verify effects on flora and vegetation change annually before and after the construction, and to provide strategies to examine and manage flora changes. The plant communities in the investigated area around the forest road is separated by the slopes into Quercus mongolica community is on the northwestern slope and Quercus variabilis and Larix kaempferi communities is on the southwestern slope. The annual investigation of flora change before and after the construction showed that there were 209 taxa that had 71 families, 153 genera, 178 species, 27 varieties, and 4 forma in 2015 while there were 66 taxa that had 44 families, 59 genera, 51 species, 13 varieties, and 2 forma in 2012 before the construction, indicating an increase of 143 texa before and after the construction. The investigation of the slope area adjacent to the forest road constructed in 2013, in particular, showed increasing coverage and taxa each year after the construction. This was caused by significantly increased light transmittance after the construction. The investigation in 2015 showed increased coverage of herbaceous layer the year after development of the forest road and the remarkable increase of the coverage of shrub layer in 2015. Further, the coverage on the slope adjacent to the forest road increased more in 2015 than in 2013 and 2014. Therefore, we expect supplementary studies will help to generate a detail manual on flora and vegetation change before and after forest road construction.

Usefulness and Limitations of Extreme Value Theory VAR model : The Korean Stock Market (극한치이론을 이용한 VAR 추정치의 유용성과 한계 - 우리나라 주식시장을 중심으로 -)

  • This study applies extreme value theory to get extreme value-VAR for Korean Stock market and showed the usefulness of the approach. Block maxima model and POT model were used as extreme value models and tested which model was more appropriate through back testing. It was shown that the block maxima model was unstable as the variation of the estimate was very large depending on the confidence level and the magnitude of the estimates depended largely on the block size. This shows that block maxima model was not appropriate for Korean Stock market. On the other hand POT model was relatively stable even though extreme value VAR depended on the selection of the critical value. Back test also showed VAR showed a better result than delta VAR above 97.5% confidence level. POT model performs better the higher the confidence level, which suggests that POT model is useful as a risk management tool especially for VAR estimates with a confidence level higher than 99%. This study picks up the right tail and left tail of the return distribution and estimates the EVT-VAR for each, which reflects the asymmetry of the return distribution of the Korean Stock market.

Native Plants Selection for Ecological Replantation and Vascular Plants in Forest Road Slope - In Case Study on Forest Road of Gyeongsangnam-do and Jeollanam-do - (임도사면의 생태적 녹화를 위한 자생식물 선정 및 관속식물상 - 경상남도와 전라남도 임도를 중심으로 -)

  • This study was carried out to select proper species fur early stage replantation in forest road cut-slope. From one to fifteen years elapsed forest roads in four regional areas of Gyeongsangnam-do and Jeollanam-do, sample plots were selected, and their vegetations and environmental factors were investigated. Invaded species and plant coverage have increased with elapsed years. The occurrence rate of herbs have decreased, while the occurrence of trees have increased with elapsed years. The ordination analysis showed that distribution of species was influenced by the elapsed year, the slope angle of the cut-slope, elevation, and the direction angle of the cut-slope. Dactylis glomerata, Poa pratensis, Amorpha fruticosa, Lespedeza sp., Artemisia princeps var. orientalis, Duchesnea chrysantha, Miscanthus sinensis, Pueraria thunbergiana, Zanthoxylum schinifolium, Rhus chinensis, and Weigela subsessilis were considered as proper species for replantation in forest road cut-slope, besides the species used already. Seventy seven family, 190 genus, 233 species, 38 variety, and 271 species in total were counted as invaded plant species in the survey zone. Naturalized plants were 18 species. Invaded species are, with high frequency first, Rubus crataegifolius, Artemisia princeps var. orientalis, Zanthoxylum schinifolium, Pueraria thunbergiana, Pinus densiflora, Lespedeza maximowiczii, Lysimachia clethroides, Lespedeza bicolor, Youngia denticulata, Miscanthus sinensis, and Erigeron annuus.

The Yield Loss Due to the Brown Plant hopper, Nilaparvata lugens Stal, in Rrelation to the Growth Stages of the Rice (벼의 생육단계별 벼멸구 피해가 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to analyst the damage due to the brown planthopper, Nilapalvata lugens Stal, at different stages(maximum tillering, booting, heading, and milking) of rice. The results are as follows: The population density of the migrating and the first generations of the brown planthoppers seemed not to be large enough to cause significant effects on the plant height and the number of tillers, while the second and the third generations caused significant reduction in 1000 grain weight(Yl) and the filled grain percentage$(Y_2)$. They were very closely related to the population density(X) of tile second generation of the BPH; $$Y1(g)=25.602-0.0213X(r=-0.5205^{**})$$ $$Y2(\%)=76.97-0.1370X(r=-0.4820^{**})$$ The relationship between rice yield (Yg) and the accumulated total density (X) of BPH per hill by the time of harvest; $$Y(g)=24.694-0.0576X(r=-0.6959^{**})$$ Since the source of the outbreak BPH is the first generation, it nay conclude that the detailed information on the population status of the first generation; density, age components, ratio of the brachypterous form, are very important in relation to management of the pest.

Host plants and Biological Characteristics of Illeis koebelei Timberlake (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae: Halyziini) in Gyeonggi-do (노랑무당벌레의 발생기주 및 생물학적 특성)

  • We investigated mycophagous ladybird, Illeis koebelei from 12 species of plants infected with powdery mildew in Gyeonggi-do, Korea. The pear tree, Pyrus ussuriensis var. macrostipes (Nakai), was most preferred by I. koebelei. This species was found from early July to early November in pear orchards. There was no entomophagous trace in the gut of I. koebelei without powdery mildew spores in a microscope. All stages except egg and pupa are obligate mycophagous, and the feeding potential is ranked as follows: fourth instar, adults, third instar, second instar, and first instar. Feeding amounts of each stage of I. koebelei were 45.6, 144.4, 372.2, 628.1, and $473.7mm^2$ of cucumber powdery mildew per day. Fourth instar larvae showed highest consumption of cucumber powdery mildew. Developmental periods of four larval instars and adults feeding cucumber powdery mildew were 1.2, 2.3, 2.3, 4.6, and 37.7 days, respectively, at $25^{\circ}C$. In this study, we could not determine the feeding potential of I. koebelei against the cucumber powdery mildew; therefore, and further studies are required to elucidate the potential of this species as a biological control agent, e.g., mass rearing, selection of low toxic chemical agents for Integrated Pest Management (IPM), and control techniques against powdery mildew in agro-ecosystems.

Optimization of Extraction Condition and Stability of Olive Leaf Extract (올리브 잎의 적정 추출조건 및 추출물의 안정성 조사)

  • Basic optimal extraction condition and stability data were determined for prediction of usefulness of olive leaf as functional food material. Solid contents of olive leaf extracts increased with increasing extraction temperature and ethanol content, and was the highest (38%) under $85^{\circ}C$, 80% ethanol, and 5 hr treatment conditions, Total phenol contents and electron-donating abilities of olive leaf extracts also increased with Increasing ethanol content, and were the highest under $25^{\circ}C$, 80% ethanol, and 1 hr treatment conditions, then slightly decreased during storage at $25,\;55,\;and\;85^{\circ}C$. Olive leaf extract showed high stability under acidic storage condition, while low under alkalic condition.

Effects of High Hydrostatic Pressure Treatment on the Chemical Composition of Germinated Rough Rice (Oryza sativar L.) (고압처리가 발아벼의 화학성분 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was performed to evaluate changes in the chemical composition of germinated rough rice with high hydrostatic pressure treatment (HPT). Rough rice was germinated at $37^{\circ}C$ over 6 days (control), and then subjected to HPT at 30 MPa for 24 h. The highest crude protein content was 9.54% in the control sample after 6 days of germination. Crude lipid content increased from 2.04-2.74% (control) to 2.27-3.10% (HPT). HPT samples showed higher values of total free sugar and glucose content than those of the control. The total amino acid value was not significant, but the essential amino acid content increased from 0.45-5.09 mg/g in the control to 1.57-5.30 mg/g in the HPT sample. The major fatty acids were found to be palmitic, oleic, and linoleic acid. The content of oleic acid decreases with HPT, whereas that of linoleic and linolenic acid increased slightly during the initial stages of germination. These results suggest that HPT after germination efficiently depolymerizes chemical components and enhances the content of essential nutrients.
