  • This study intends to explore structural characteristics of social networks for female immigrants married to Korean men, and to analyze the relationship between the characteristics and types of social supports provided by their social networks and the differences between support-giving and support-receiving networks. Ego-centered network analysis is used for collecting network data on fifty-three migrant wives selected by a snowball sampling method. Results show that social support receiving and giving networks of female immigrants have similarities rather than differences, which implied that they play roles not only as support receivers, but also as support givers in their social networks. Also the study suggests that there are correlations between networks' characteristics, such as density and effective size of ego network, and types of supports. The result indicates that the less cohesive and less redundant ties female immigrants had, the more diverse and more informational and emotional supports they obtained from their social networks. Due to the sampling method and size, this study has a limitation to generalize the results for the whole population of female immigrants in Korea. However, it provides a basic understanding of female immigrants' social networks.

  • Sweden invited immigrant workers, mainly from Nordic countries and West European countries until the 1960s. But since the 1970s refugees and their family members have become the largest group of immigrants. As the composition of immigrants has changed significantly, and the labor market conditions have been aggravated, immigrants have had much difficulty in finding jobs. This has aroused policy debates concerning the reason why the immigrants are not well integrated into the labor market and how to solve the problem. While there is a broad consensus on micro reform policy alternatives, there are significant opinion gaps concerning major issues such as labor market flexibilization and immigration restrictions. It would seems that the poor results of immigrants' labor market integration may increase the pressure for labor market flexibilization and also bring about significant changes to the Swedish welfare state model designed on the premise of full employment.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the reasons why Chinese marriage immigrant women do not teach their children to learn their mother tongue to second language and to present improvement plans about it. We have collected data mainly through in-depth-interview of four Chinese marriage immigrant women that have lived in Korea for more than 10 years from March to June, 2017. The results show that there are four environmental aspects why they do not teach their children to learn their mother tongue. First, their children are lack of access to learn Chinese. Second, their children do not want to learn Chinese because of the negative images of China in Korea. Third, Chinese marriage immigrant women are busy adjusting themselves to the Korean society so that they have no time to teach their children to learn Chinese. Lastly, Chinese marriage immigrant women are lack of confidence to teach their children to learn Chinese and Chinese culture, because it exist that Koreans have negative perceptions of other cultures. We hope that there will be opportunities for marriage immigrant women to teach their children to learn their mother tongue through this study.
