  • Blogs are now one of the major information resources on the web. The purpose of this study is to enhance the performance of blog retrieval by means of user assigned tags and trackback information. To this end, retrieval experiments were performed with a dataset of 4,908 blog pages together with their associated trackback URLs. In the experiments, text terms, user tags, and network centrality values based on trackbacks were variously combined as retrieval features. The experimental results showed that employing user tags and network centrality values as retrieval features in addition to text words could improve the performance of blog retrieval.

  • Since IR systems which adopt only Boolean IR model can not provide ranked search result, users have to conduct time-consuming checking process for huge result sets one by one. This study proposes a method to provide search results ranked by using coupling information between tags instead of index weight information in Boolean IR model. Because document queries are used instead of general user queries in the proposed method, key tags used as queries in a relevant document are extracted. A variety of groups of Boolean queries based on tag couplings are created in the process of extracting queries. Ranked search result can be extracted through the process of matching conducted with differential information among the query groups and tag significance information. To prove the usability of the proposed method, the experiment was conducted to find research trend analysis information on selected research information. Aslo, the service based on the proposed methods was provided to get user feedback for a year. The result showed high user satisfaction.

  • In this study, clustering methods with related tags were discussed for improving search and exploration in the tag space. The experiments were performed on 10 Delicious tags and the strongly-related tags extracted by each 300 documents, and hierarchical and non-hierarchical clustering methods were carried out based on the tag co-occurrences. To evaluate the experimental results, cluster relevance was measured. Results showed that Ward's method with cosine coefficient, which shows good performance to term clustering, was best performed with consistent clustering tendency. Furthermore, it was analyzed that cluster membership among related tags is based on users' tagging purposes or interest and can disambiguate word sense. Therefore, tag clusters would be helpful for improving search and exploration in the tag space.

  • Recently, many user-participating web services have been used widely as the evolution of internet web technology has rapidly been developed. Users share various content and opinion on line using a site like ‘Social bookmarking.’ Users can share others’ bookmarking history and create tags while bookmarking web sites; we call it collaborative tagging. In this paper, we studied empirical analysis for widely used social bookmarking and collaborative tagging which the result shows minority of users is actively using the bookmarking and a few sites and tags are used by majority of the users. 24% users tagged 80%, 75% sites and 81% tags were tagged below than 3 times. Types of bookmarking activities were found different by users and early appointed tags get more frequency by majority. We also identified relative proportions of tags on certain sites are becoming convergence gradually. We expect the result of this paper will give opportunities to help further developing social bookmarking system.

  • This study has introduced folksonomy to general patterns of folksonomy tags for the university libraries that have practically implemented Library 2.0. From the results, we can see that average about 1.35 tag is used for one content. Typical pattern of the tags follow a power function that frequency of use decreases as No. of uses increases, 79.51% of tags are expressing topic of contents, and 84.61% of tags are tag of social motivation. The results of analysis on increase/decrease rate for tags divided into 4 quarters said that A university library has big differences from quarters while B university library has similar data between quarters. The users have used average 5.25 tags. Trends of the users can be divided into 3 groups according to tagging patterns of the users.

  • This study analyzed the characteristics and functions of tags in academic libraries and commercial sites. Tags in tag clouds from 6 different sites were collected in terms of tag popularity and importance. The gathered tags were analyzed in terms of tagging purpose, the tagging function, and the physical characteristics of tags. The results can be used to apply the tagging service to academic digital libraries.

  • The study proposed an electronic journal retrieval model to be used to improve the retrieval efficiency of e-journals. To do this, firstly, we reviewed the literature on users' information behavior and on ERM (Electronic Resource Management) systems. Secondly, we conducted an e-mail survey of 96 participants (professors and graduate students) to find out about their information behavior on how to access, use and evaluate electronic resources as well as scientific information. Thirdly, we administered case studies on two ERMSs, Ex Libris' Verde and Innovative's Millennium. The proposed model will be operated within ERM systems and it enables to the supply of both system- and user-based services by combining taxonomy-based ERM systems with tag folksonomy. The model is unique in that it includes not only the automatic tagging functions that can be performed using log files but also the tag management functions including grouping similar or related tags.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the current status of user-contributed reviews for the Next Generation Library Catalogs, and the potential impact of user reviews available from the external sources, including Amazon.com and GoodReads.com. During the period of February 16th through April 4th, 2012, the number of holding libraries and user-contributed reviews, tags and reading lists of ten selected books were examined from the WorldCat. Also the user-contributed reviews for the same books available from Amazon.com and GoodReads.com were examined, and a case of reviews for one book was analyzed. The result shows that only a few users participated in the WorldCat, and user-contributed reviews were rarely used, when compared with tags or reading lists. Several hundred to thousand user-contributed reviews for the same books were available from Amazon.com and GoodReads.com directly linked with bibliographic records. A case of one book from Amazon.com reveals the possibility of distorting the function of user-contribution. With the introduction of the function of user-contribution, it is expected that its growth rate should be carefully observed and its potential impact on users should be thoroughly and systematically analyzed in the near future.

  • Although social metadata has strengths in creating amount of user-contributed resource descriptions, its function is limited because of its non-systematic characteristics. This research proposed an alternative approach to semantic organization of social metadata. It analyzed the semantics of tags created in LibraryThing in order to provide bibliographic categories for describing information resources. Social information Architecture is adopted in generating the bibliographic categories so that social metadata framework can be constructed. This framework can provide the conceptual foundations for semantically organizing social metadata and is expected to be applied to the existing approaches to automatically organize social metadata.
