The grafting of 2,3-epoxypropylmethacrylate (GMA) onto polypropylene fabric was carried out by the $\gamma$-ray preirradiation grafting technique. Subsequently, the GMA-grafted polypropylene fabric was reacted with iminodiacetic acid (IDA) in different mixed solvents to prepare the fibrous metal adsorbent. The grafting extent was found to be dependent on the reaction time, temperature, preirradiation dose and dose rate. The effects of various mixed solvents on the IDA amination onto GMA-grafted polypropylene fabric were investigated. Compared with other mixed solvents, the extent of amination was highest in the dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO)/water, but the reaction did not occur in the water. The adsorption characteristics of various metal ions by the prepared adsorbent were examined when it was immersed in the 100 ppm metal ion solution. The amount of adsorption followed the order:$Pb^{2+}>Co^{2+}>Fe^{2+}$.

Purpose : Expression of TIMP, intrinsic inhibitor of MMP, is regulated by signal transduction in response to genotoxins and is likely to be an important step in metastasis, angiogenesis and wound healing after ionizing radiation. Therefore, we studied radiation mediated TIMP expression and its mechanism in head and neck cancer cell lines. Materials and Methods : Human head and neck cancer cell lines established at Asan Medical Center were used and radiosensitivity $(D_0)$, radiation cytotoxicity and metastatic potential were measured by clonogenic assay, n assay and invasion assay, respectively. The conditioned medium was prepared at 24 hours and 48 hours after 2 Gy and 10 Gy irradiation and expression of TIMP protein was measured by Elisa assay with specific antibodies against human TIMP. hTIMP1 promoter region was cloned and TIMP1 luciferase reporter vector was constructed. The reporter vector was transfected to AMC-HN-1 and -HN-9 cells with or without expression vector Ras, then the cells were exposed to radiation or PMA, PKC activator. EMSA was peformed with oligonucleotide (-59/-53 element and SP1) of TIMP1 promoter. Results : $D_0$ of HN-1, -2, -3, -5 and -9 cell lines were 1.55 Gy, 1.8 Gy, 1.5 Gt, 1.55 Gy and 2.45 Gy respectively. n assay confirmed cell viability, over $94\%$ at 24hrs, 48hrs after 2 Gy irradiation and over 73% after 10 Gy irradiation. Elisa assay confirmed that cells secreted TIMP1, 2 proteins continuously. After 2 Gy irradiation, TIMP2 secretion was decreased at 24hrs in HN-1 and HN-9 cell lines but after 10 Gy irradiation, it was increased in all cell lines. At 48hrs after irradiation, it was increased in HN-1 but decreased in HN-9 cells. But the change in TIMP secretion by RT was mild. The transcription of TIMP1 gene in HN-1 was induced by PMA but in HN-9 cell lines, it was suppressed. Wild type Ras induced the TIMP-1 transcription by 20 fold and 4 fold in HN-1 and HN-9 respectively. The binding activity to -59/-53, AP1 motif was increased by RT, but not to SP1 motif in both cell lines. Conclusions : We observed the difference of expression and activity of TIMPs between radiosensitive and radioresistant cell line and the different signal transduction pathway between in these cell lines may contribute the different radiosensitivity. Further research to investigate the radiation response and its signal pathway of TIMPs is needed.
Soil pollution by heavy metals has become a significant environmental concern due to a variety of human activities. Specially toxicity caused by excessive mercury exposure is now being recognized as a widespread environmental problem and is continuing to attract a great deal of public concerns. The earthworms are very important animals that aerate the soil with their burrowing action and enrich the soil by decomposing organic matters. Especially the earthworm Eisenia fetida is routinely used in ecotoxicological studies. The levels of DNA damage in earthworms treated with HgCl2 and ionizing radiation were investigated in this study. Genotoxic effects were evaluated in the earthworm's coelomocytes using the comet assay (Single Cell Gel Electrophoresis; SCGE). The results showed that the mercury chloride and radiation were responsible for the genotoxic effects on earthworms. The level of DNA damage significantly increased after the treatment of mercury chloride combined with ionizing radiation. The combined treatment of $HgCl_2$ and ionizing radiation had a greater genotoxicity. This study is amenable to further study such as enzyme activation assay.
A number of investigators have reported the formation of the radiolytic ultrafine particles produced by the interaction of ionizing radiation with water vapor. Previous studies have suggested that a very high localized concentration of the OH radical produced by the radiolysis of water can react with trace gas like organic vapors and produce lower vapor pressure compounds that can then nucleate. In order to determine water vapor dependence of the active, positively charged, first radon daughter(Po-218), an experiment was conducted using a well-controlled radon chamber. The activity size distribution of the radon daughter in the range of 0.5-100nm was measured using the parallel graded wire screens system. Measurements were taken for different relative humidity. The resultant activity size distributions were analyzed. The addition of water vapor to the radon carrier gases resulted in the formation of ultrafine particles by OH radicals formed by radon radiolysis. It may be due to the neutralization of charged Po-218 ion with water vapor through the radio lysis.
DC/DC switching power converters are commonly used to generate a regulated DC output voltage with high efficiency. The advanced DC/DC converter uses a PWM-IC with OP-Amp. (Operational Amplifier) to control a MOSFET (metal-oxide semiconductor field effect transistor), which is a switching component, efficiently. In this paper, it is shown that the electrical characteristics of OP-Amp. are affected by radiations of ${\gamma}$ rays using $^{60}Co$ for TID (Total Ionizing Dose) testing and 5 heavy ions for SEL (Single Event Latch-up) testing. TID testing on OP-Amp. is accomplished up to the total dose of 30 krad, and the cross section($cm^2$) versus LET($MeV/mg/cm^2$) in the OP-Amp. operation is evaluated SEL testing after implementation of the controller board.
The use of the dosimetry have been increasingly recognized as high radiation energy and radiation treatment planning(RTP) have rapidly developed in radiotherapy. There are many types of detectors for the dosimetry such as ionization chamber, film, TLD, diode, and etc. Among such detectors, the diode detector uses a photoconductor materials that generate electrical signals by the incident radiation energy. Though many research groups are recently interested in such materials, there is few experimental results except for silicon in the radiation therapy field. In this study, the feasibility of photoconductor materials was verified as a dosimeter through the evaluation of response properties at a high radiation energy. For the fabricated detectors based on $HgI_2$ and $PbI_2$, reproducibility, linearity, and pulse-rate response were analyzed. Such evaluations are essential factors for the use of dosimeter. From results, linearity and reproducibility of the fabricated $HgI_2$ detector indicated about 7% error. The fabricated $PbI_2$ detector showed 1.7% error in linearity, and 12.2% error in reproducibility.

The cation-exchange adsorbent (CEA) was prepared by radiation-induced grafting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto polypropylene (PP) fabric and its subsequently phosphonation. The adsorption characteristics of $Pb^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$ and $Co^{2+}$ for the CEA were discussed. In the grafting of GMA onto PP fabric, the degree of grafting (%) increased with increasing reaction time, reaction temperature, and pre-irradiation dose. The maximum grafting yield was observed around 60% GMA concentration. The content of phosphoric acid ranges from 2.5 to 3.5 mmol/g with the 85% phosphoric acid. The adsorption of $Pb^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$ and $Co^{2+}$ by the CEA was enhanced with increasing phosphoric acid content. The order of adsorption capacity of CEA was $Pb^{2+}$>$Co^{2+}$>$Cu^{2+}$.
Double ionization of the K- shell accompanying K- shell electron capture of the 0.035 MeV transition of $^{125}I$ has been studied by counting coincidences between $K_{\alpha}$ hypersatellite X-rays and Ka satellite X-rays emitted when double vacancies are filled. The $^{125}I\;and\;^{125}Te^m$ source materials were used in the measurement. We obtained the coincidence spectrum using two NaI(T1) detectors and a Ge(Li) detector and TAC(Time-to-Amplitude Converter), and then analysed the measured coincidence number $N(K_{\alpha}^{II},\;K_{\alpha}^s)$, the total number $N(K_{\alpha})$ of K X-ray. The probability per K-shell electron capture that a double vacancy is formed, $P_{KK}$ is formed, $P_{KK}$ is found to be $2.15{\times}10^{-4}$.
The present study was carried out to investigate the combined effect of radiation and photoperiod (PP) regimes on Tradescantia 4430 somatic cell mutations. Potted plants were irradiated with 0.3, 0.5 and 1.0 Gy of gamma radiation from 60Co source. The plants irradiated only with gamma radiation were used as control group (CT). The somatic cell mutation rate in 0.5 Gy irradiated CT and PP20 group started to increase on the 6th day and reached a maximum value on the l0th day and 9th day after irradiation while the rate in the experimental group under 4 hours of photoperiod a day (PP4) started to increase on the l0th day and reached a maximal value on the 16th day post-irradiation. The slope of dose-response curve in CT was 5.99 ($r^2$=0.99), while it was 6.93 ($r^2$=0.98) in PP20 and 11.74 ($r^2$=0.99) in PP4, respectively. The biological efficacy of radiation in the induction of pink mutation increased by 15.7% in PP20 and 95.9 % in PP4, respectively. It is suggested that photoperiod regimes unfavorable to the plant have an additive effect on radiation-induced mutations and a delaying or inhibiting effect on cell damage repair, as well.
