이산·연속선택모형을 이용한 친환경자동차에 대한 지원정책이 에너지 소비와 CO2 배출에 미치는 영향 분석

  • This study applies a discrete-continuous choice model to a national survey data set of automobile uses to investigate the potential impacts of a bonus-malus system for new cars in Korea. Not only the impacts on the discrete choice of automobile type and class but also those on the continuous decision making of car operation are analyzed. The characteristics of automobiles and individuals that determine car choice and operation are identified. The simulation based on the estimation result shows that an appropriately designed bonus-malus system can induce a reduction in energy consumption and $CO_2$ emission substantially without additional government expenditure.

  • After the Kyoto Protocol has been ratified in Feb. 16 2005, the developed countries which is involved in Annex-1 have tried to mitigate GHG to the reduction objective. To accomplish this objective, EU developed EU-ETS, CDM project, and so on. Korea has faced pressure to be a member of Annex-1, because Korea and Mexico are only non-Annex-1 countries in the OECD nations. In this study, we simulated power plant expansion plan and calculated $CO_2$ emission with changing Carbon Tax. Especially, we focused on the competitiveness of IGCC and carbon capture technology. In our result, even though carbon tax rise, nuclear power plant does not always increase, it increase up to minimum load. LNG combined cycle power plants substitute the coal fired power plants. If there are many alternatives like IGCC, these substitute a coal fired power plant and we can reduce more $CO_2$ and save mitigation cost.

에너지 소비효율 개선과 리바운드 효과: 수송부문을 중심으로

  • Korean government recently announced that new passenger cars sold within South Korea in 2009 ran an average of 12.27 kilometers per liter of fuel, which is an 7% point increase of the fuel efficiency. The government interpreted these improvements in the fuel economy as energy savings of 60,000 toe and as a reduction of 160,000 ton $CO_2$ emissions. However, improvements in energy efficiency make energy services cheaper, which is known as rebound effect. If this rebound effect exists, and the size of the effect is not negligible, ignoring this could result in overestimating the energy savings achieved by the fuel efficiency increase. Using detailed data on household and vehicle characteristics, our results suggest that there exist a short-run rebound effect of 0.299(29.9%) for the Korean automobile industry. This is notably smaller than the estimates of West (2004), which finds an estimate of 87% using cross-section data for the US. Furthermore our results highlight the importance of rebound effect on energy savings and the $CO_2$ emissions reduction. Our estimates suggest that the report from Korean government overestimates the energy savings and related $CO_2$ emissions by 29.9% point.

  • The engineering industry heavily relies on fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum to generate energy through combustion. However, this process emits carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, leading to global warming. To mitigate this issue, researchers have explored various methods to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, one of which is carbon dioxide underground storage technology. This innovative technology involves capturing carbon dioxide from industrial plants and injecting it into the saturated ground layer beneath the earth's surface, storing it securely underground. Despite its potential benefits, carbon dioxide underground storage efficiency needs improvement to optimize storage in a limited space. To address this challenge, our research team has focused on improving storage efficiency by utilizing surfactants. Furthermore, we evaluated how different carbon dioxide states, including gaseous, liquid, and supercritical, impact storage efficiency based on their respective pressures and temperatures within the underground reservoir. Our findings indicate that using surfactants and optimizing the injection rate can effectively enhance storage efficiency across all carbon dioxide states. This research will pave the way for more efficient carbon dioxide underground storage, contributing to mitigating the environmental impact of fossil fuels on the planet.

Biotechnology for the Mitigation of Methane Emission from Landfills (매립지의 메탄 배출 저감을 위한 생물공학기술)

  • Methane, as a greenhouse gas, is some 21~25 times more detrimental to the environmental than carbon dioxide. Landfills generally constitute the most important anthropogenic source, and methane emission from landfill was estimated as 35~73 Tg per year. Biological approaches using biocover (open system) and biofilter (closed system) can be a promising solution for older and/or smaller landfills where the methane production is too low for energy recovery or flaring and installation of a gas extraction system is inefficient. Methanotrophic bacteria, utilizing methane as a sole carbon and energy source, are responsible for the aerobic degradation (oxidation) of methane in the biological systems. Many bench-scale studies have demonstrated a high oxidation capacity in diverse filter bed materials such as soil, compost, earthworm cast and etc. Compost had been most often employed in the biological systems, and the methane oxidation rates in compost biocovers/boifilters ranged from 50 to $700\;g-CH_4\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$. Some preliminary field trials have showed the suitability of biocovers/biofilters for practical application and their satisfactory performance in mitigation methane emissions. Since the reduction of landfill methane emissions has been linked to carbon credits and trading schemes, the verified quantification of mitigated emissions through biocovers/biofilters is very important. Therefore, the assessment of in situ biocovers/biofilters performance should be standardized, and the reliable quantification methods of methane reduction is necessary.

Economic and Environmental Assessment of a Renewable Stand-Alone Energy Supply System Using Multi-objective Optimization (다목적 최적화 기법을 이용한 신재생에너지 기반 자립 에너지공급 시스템 설계 및 평가)

  • This study aims to propose a new optimization-based approach for design and analysis of the stand-alone hybrid energy supply system using renewable energy sources (RES). In the energy supply system, we include multiple energy production technologies such as Photovoltaics (PV), Wind turbine, and fossil-fuel-based AC generator along with different types of energy storage and conversion technologies such as battery and inverter. We then select six different regions of Korea to represent various characteristics of different RES potentials and demand profiles. We finally designed and analyzed the optimal RES stand-alone energy supply system in the selected regions using multiobjective optimization (MOOP) technique, which includes two objective functions: the minimum cost and the minimum $CO_2$ emission. In addition, we discussed the feasibility and expecting benefits of the systems by comparing to conventional systems of Korea. As a result, the region of the highest RES potential showed the possibility to remarkably reduce $CO_2$ emissions compared to the conventional system. Besides, the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of the RES-based energy system is identified to be slightly higher than conventional energy system: 0.35 and 0.46 $/kWh, respectively. However, the total life-cycle emission of $CO_2$ ($LCE_{CO2}$) can be reduced up to 470 g$CO_2$/kWh from 490 g$CO_2$/kWh of the conventional systems.

Expressway Greenhouse Gas Reduction Effect Analysis According to the Electric Vehicle Supply (전기차 보급전망에 따른 고속도로 온실가스 저감효과 분석)

  • This Study analyzed the electric car effect on the Korea Expressway System in terms of year 2020 $CO_2$ emission. The analysis was based on the green car dissemination goal by the government and year 2010 emission statistics. Major contents performed in the study area were as follows. First, the greenhouse gases emitted from the highways were found to be approximately 17.3 million tons of $CO_2$ as of 2010. Analysis showed the emission would be 17.4 million tons in 2015 and 16.2 million tons in 2020. The results in the pattern reflect the effect of O/D on the KTBD and the trend of traffic increase from 2015 to 2020 followed by decrease in 2020. Second, in the case of greenhouse gas emission with the anticipated supply of electric cars, the amount of emission in 2015 will be 17.1 million tons, which is about 2.0% reduction compared to the lack of introduction of electric cars. The analysis also showed that in 2020, the amount of emission will be 14.2 million tons, which indicates the effect of reduction is 12.8% compared to non implementation of the program.

  • Purpose: The paper aims to compare the effectiveness of the two types of transport demand management measures, namely pull measures and push measures. Method: Case studies of two metropolitan areas in the developing world assess the extent to which increases in fuel prices can contribute to reducing automobile use and increasing the public transport use and the potential of urban rail transit to cause mode shift from automobiles. Within the case studies, a stated response survey of current car users has been conducted for Cairo and an on-line survey of rail transit users in Algiers. Results: There was a major proportion of car drivers who intend to switch to public transport, depending on the range of fuel prices in Cairo and a considerable proportion of rail users who have switched from automobiles resulting in a measurable reduction in CO2 emissions in Algiers. Conclusion: Investments in urban rail can be highly effective where there are demands for better public transport, but this type of pull measures can be much more effective if combined with push measures which significantly raise driving costs.

  • 기후변화와 도시화로 인한 영향으로 도시의 폭우, 폭염을 비롯한 현상이 빈번하게 발생하고 있다. 특히 시가화 지역의 높은 불투수율은 도시홍수를 야기한다. 이러한 현상을 완화하기 위해 도시지역에서는 그린인프라와 저영향개발이 도입되고 있다. 그 중 지속가능한 발전을 위한 필수요소로 자리매김한 옥상녹화는 도시에 위치한 건물의 상층부와 내부의 온도를 낮춤으로써 에너지절감효과와 강우 시 빗물을 저류함으로써 우수유출 저감효과, 그리고 도시 공간 내 녹지도입으로 인한 이산화탄소 배출 저감 효과 등을 기대할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 열섬현상완화와 유출 저감의 방안 중 하나인 옥상녹화(Green roof)의 효과를 정량적으로 평가하기 위해 콘크리트로 이루어진 동일한 제원의 실험동을 구축하고, 실험동 내외부의 온도, 습도, 강우, 풍속, 일사량 등의 기상자료를 측정할 수 있는 센서를 설치하였다. 각 실험동에서 측정된 기상요소를 Flux Profile Method를 적용하여 공간 내에 있는 열에너지의 총량인 순복사열을 구성하는 현열속, 잠열속, 토양열속(H, LE, G)을 산정하였다. 또한 에너지 평형에 따라 산정된 각 실험동의 열속과 지표면 복사량 관측자료을 정량적으로 비교하여 옥상녹화의 적용성을 평가하였다. 2021년 7월 21일부터 2021년 7월 28일 까지 모니터링한 결과 옥상녹화의 열 효율은 일반 콘크리트 지붕에 비해 실내온도가 최대 6.83℃ 낮게 나타나며 이는 여름철 건물 내부의 온도조절에 필요한 에너지 저감효과를 볼 수 있다. Flux Profile Method를 적용한 결과 옥상녹화의 전체 열속 중 현열속 28.5% 잠열속 70.7%, 토양열속 0.5% 의 복사량 분포를 보였고, 일반 콘크리트 지붕은 현열속 45.3%, 잠열속 38.6%, 토양열속 16.2% 으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 방법은 옥상녹화의 정량적 평가를 가능하게 함으로서 향후 기후변화 대응방안 및 전략 수립 시 옥상녹화의 온도저감효과 분석에 적극 활용할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

  • 현재 전 지구적으로 일어나고 있는 극단적 기후현상과 이로 인한 자연재해의 원인은 복합적이다. 기후변화로 인한 영향과 동시에 도시화 또한 하나의 원인으로 작용하고 있다. 이러한 영향을 완화하기 위한 방안으로 도시의 그린인프라와 저영향개발은 최근 지속가능한 발전을 위해 꼭 필요한 요소로 자리잡고 있다. 그린인프라 유형 중 하나인 옥상녹화는 많은 이점을 제공한다. 도시에 위치한 건물의 상층부, 내부 및 주변 온도을 낮춤으로써 얻을 수 있는 에너지절감 효과와 강우 시 상당량의 빗물을 저류함으로써 기대되는 우수유출 저감효과, 그리고 도시 공간 내 식물의 적극적인 도입으로 인한 이산화탄소 배출 저감 효과 등을 기대할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 도시지역의 열섬현상완화와 유출저감의 방안 중 하나인 옥상녹화(Green roof)의 효과를 정량적으로 평가하기 위해 콘크리트로 이루어진 동일한 제원의 실험동을 구축하고, 실험동 내외부의 연직방향 온도, 습도, 강우, 풍속, 일사량 등의 기상자료를 측정할 수 있는 센서를 설치하였다. 각 실험동에서 측정된 기상자료를 Flux Profile Method를 적용하여 무강우기간과 강우발생기간 동안의 연직 방향의 현열속, 잠열속, 토양열속(H, LE, G) 을 산정하였다. 에너지 평형에 따라 산정된 각 실험동의 열속과 지표면 복사량 관측자료을 정량적으로 비교하여 적용성을 평가하였다. 실험의 대조군인 일반 코팅재로 마감된 콘크리트 지붕의 무강우 기간 중 최대 현열속 693.82 W/m2 잠열속은 330.15 W/m2 으로 나타났으며, 실험군인 옥상녹화가 조성된 지붕의 최대 현열속 436.27 W/m2, 잠열속 949.20 W/m2 으로 나타났으며, 산정치와 관측치 시계열의 NSE는 0.81 으로 Flux Profile Method를 통해 산정된 열속의 정확도는 비교적 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 방법으로 옥상녹화의 정량적 평가가 가능해짐으로써 향후 기후변화 대응방안 및 전략 수립 시 옥상녹화의 온도저감효과 분석에 적극 활용할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.
