  • The multi-level profile system is designed to measure the vertical profile of $H_2O$ and $CO_2$ concentrations in the surface layer to estimate the storage effects within the plant canopy. It is suitable for long-term experiments and can be used also in advection studies for estimating the spatial variability and vertical gradients in concentration. It enables the user to calculate vertical fluxes of water vapor, $CO_2$ and other trace gases using the surface layer similarity theory and to infer their sources or sinks. The profile system described in this report includes the following components: sampling system, calibration and flow control system, closed path infrared gas analyzer(IRGA), vacuum pump and a datalogger. The sampling system draws air from 8 inlets into the IRGA in a sequence, so that for 80 seconds air from all levels is measured. The calibration system, controlled by the datalogger, compensates for any deviations in the calibration of the IRGA by using gas sources with known concentrations. The datalogger switches the corresponding valves, measures the linearized voltages from the IRGA, calculates the concentrations for each monitoring level, performs statistical analysis and stores the final data. All critical components are mounted in an environmental enclosure and can operate with little maintenance over long periods of time. This report, as a practical manual, is designed to provide helpful information for those who are interested in using profile system to measure evapotranspiration and net ecosystem exchanges in complex terrain.

  • The complementary relationship-based evapotranspiration models, namely, AA model of Brutsaert and Stricker (1979) and the CRAE model of Morton (1983) was applied to two permanent stream watersheds Jeju island for the first time, and their major optimal parameters were suggested in this study. The representative watersheds for model calibration and validation were selected as the Hancheon watershed located in the northern part of the Jeju island and and the Kangjeongcheon watershed in southern Jeju island, respectively. The estimated actual evapotranspiration for the Hancheon watershed was compared with the result by the hydrological model, and the major parameters of the AA and CRAE models were calibrated until their results match the hydrological simulations. Through the iterative estimations, the optimal parameters were determined as ${\alpha}=1.00$, $M=30.0Wm^{-2}$ of the AA model, and $b_1=33.0Wm^{-2}$, $b_2=1.02$ of the CRAE model. The calibrated AA and CRAE models were applied to the Kangjeongcheon watershed for model validation, and it was found out that both models can accurately produce the actual evaporation on annual and semiannual bases.

  • This research observed the cross section current of 7 survey lines in Seokmo Channel of Gyeonggi bay with a lot of freshwater inflow and S-shaped for 13 hours during flood season and neap tide. We indicated the distribution of the current velocity by comprehending the speed and direction of the current velocity of each line during maximum flood, ebb tide and observed the distribution of salinity. Moreover, in order to understand what lateral momentum causes the lateral flow in each survey line, we practiced the momentum analysis through the observation data. As a result, the lateral baroclinic pressure gradient force and vertical friction of the Seokmo channel during neap tide were the strongest, and this is why the flow by the distribution of salinity and stratification most often occurs. In north of the Seokmo channel, where have wide intertidal and a lot of freshwater inflow, the secondary circulation is caused by balance of lateral baroclinic pressure gradient force and other forces, and the vertical friction was strong in the lines with small depth. On the other hand, in the southern part of the Seokmo channel where the water is deep and the waterway is curved, the advective acceleration and centrifugal force become stronger by the geographical causes during ebb and the influence of fresh water. Therefore, the lateral flow in the Seokmo channel was caused by the distribution of the momentum that differs by location, depth, curve, etc.

  • The multi-level $H_2O/CO_2$ profile system has been widely used to quantify the storage and advection effects on energy and mass fluxes measured by eddy covariance systems. In this study, we expanded the utility of the profile system by accommodating air sampling devices for isotope analyses of water vapor and $CO_2$. A pre-evacuated 2L glass flask was connected to the discharge of an Infrared Gas Analyzer (IRGA) of the profile system so that airs with known concentration of $H_2O$ and $CO_2$ can be sampled. To test the performance of this sampling system, we sampled airs from 8 levels (from 0.1 to 40 m) at the KoFlux tower of Gwangneung deciduous forest, Korea. Air samples in the 2L flask were separated into its component gases and pure $H_2O$ and $CO_2$ were extracted by using a vacuum extraction line. This novel technique successfully produced vertical profiles of ${\delta}D$ of $H_2O$ and ${\delta}^{13}C$ of $CO_2$ in a mature forest, and estimated ${\delta}D$ of evapotranspiration (${\delta}D_{ET}$) and ${\delta}^{13}C$ of $CO_2$ from ecosystem respiration (${\delta}^{13}C_{resp}$) by using Keeling plots. While technical improvement is still required in various aspects, our sampling system has two major advantages over other proposed techniques. First, it is cost effective since our system uses the existing structure of the profile system. Second, both $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ can be sampled simultaneously so that net ecosystem exchange of $H_2O$ and $CO_2$ can be partitioned at the same temporal resolution, which will improve our understanding of the coupling between water and carbon cycles in terrestrial ecosystems.

  • In order to ensure a standardized data analysis of the eddy covariance measurements, Hong and Kim's quality control program has been updated and used to process eddy covariance data measured at two levels on the main flux tower at Gwangneung site from January to May in 2005. The updated program was allowed to remove outliers automatically for $CO_2$ and latent heat fluxes. The flag system consists of four quality groups(G, D, B and M). During the study period, the missing data were about 25% of the total records. About 60% of the good quality data were obtained after the quality control. The number of record in G group was larger at 40m than at 20m. It is due that the level of 20m was within the roughness sublayer where the presence of the canopy influences directly on the character of the turbulence. About 60% of the bad data were due to low wind speed. Energy balance closure at this site was about 40% during the study period. Large imbalance is attributed partly to the combined effects of the neglected heat storage terms, inaccuracy of ground heat flux and advection due to local wind system near the surface. The analysis of wind direction indicates that the frequent occurrence of positive momentum flux was closely associated with mountain valley wind system at this site. The negative $CO_2$ flux at night was examined in terms of averaging time. The results show that when averaging time is larger than 10min, the magnitude of calculated $CO_2$ fluxes increases rapidly, suggesting that the 30min $CO_2$ flux is influenced severely by the mesoscale motion or nonstationarity. A proper choice of averaging time needs to be considered to get accurate turbulent fluxes during nighttime.
