  • Children with language developmental disabilities often struggle through their lives from a lot of challenges in everyday life and social activities. They're often easily deprived of the opportunity to engage in social activities, because they find difficulty in understanding or using language, a core means of communication. With regard to this issue, AAC(Augmentative and Alternative Communication) can be an effective communication tool for children who are suffering from language disabilities. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based AI service to make full use of the pictogram as an AAC tool for children with language developmental disabilities to improve not only the ability to interact with others but the capacity to understand language. Using this service, we strive to help these children to more effectively communicate their intention or desire and enhance the quality of life.

  • E-Learning is different from the traditional classroom learning and examinees can take a class individually anywhere by online. And it is difficult to proctor an examination because they also take a test by online. However the results of the online test are included in their examination scores. Therefore, it is very important to authenticate the examinees. In this paper, we propose improvement of fairness system for online test using camera. Students can take a picture after every online classes and it has been saved. And during the test, ELTS(e-Learning Test System) takes images, detects the faces, and protects from getting another person to sit for cheating. After examination, the images have been transferred with the answer sheets to the cyber school management system. And a report card will be printed out with the user's images. Moreover, it will authenticate oneself and protect the online test from cheating.

  • Most of the online learning systems provide information that is based on the item difficulty what is custumized to learner. And the same learning process is performing to the same learning level learners. But, the degree of understanding of the same learning contents can be different even if the learner's level is same. Therefore, it is difficult to represent an effective learning experience because the learning is progressed by the determined difficulty of learning and the learning process even thought the provided content is difficult to understand. So we can control the learning difficulty during learning in order to escape from a uniform learning that online learning is provided. In this paper, we proposed a contents reorganization method for Self-Directed Learning. In this way, learners can understand their own level and customize the difficulty of learning. And then we expect the higher learning effect and satisfaction degree.

  • This study aims to examine how the use of Padlet, an online platform, affects students' English writing anxiety and English writing strategy in online college English writing classes. A total of 64 college students participated in the study and completed the survey including English writing anxiety, English writing strategy and demographic information. For the study, we divided participants into 2 groups, experimental group using Padlet for their writing tasks and control group using college e-learning during a semester. The results showed that students using Padlet used more writing strategies than the students using college e-learning platform. The use of Padlet, however, was not statistically significant on writing anxiety. English writing anxiety was differed by English level, but decreased at the end of semester regardless of English level. The results imply that Padlet is a useful online learning tool for English learners to actively use English writing strategies and even for learners with low English writing proficiency.

  • In the past, satellite development required enormous budget and time, so only some developed countries possessed satellites. However, with the recent emergence of low-budget satellites such as micro-satellites, many countries around the world are participating in satellite development. Low-orbit and geostationary-orbit satellites are used in various fields such as environment and weather monitoring, precise change detection, and disasters. Recently, it has been actively used for monitoring through deep learning-based object-of-interest detection. Until now, Korea has developed satellites for national demand according to the space development plan, and the satellite image obtained through this is used for various purpose in the public and private sectors. Interest in satellite image is continuously increasing in Korea, and various contests are being held to discover ideas for satellite image application and promote technology development. In this special issue, we would like to introduce the topics that participated in the recently held 2022 Satellite Information Application Contest and research on the processing and utilization of KOMPSAT image data.

  • This article discusses the possibilities and limitations of ICT education by reviewing the previous research on its various aspects including educational goals, contents, methods, and evaluation. First, when it comes to its educational goal, the prior studies suggest that ICT education aims to nurture digital citizenship among students and to enable them to participate in different sectors of our society. ICT education characterizes the core capacities of its future learners as 'lifelong learners,' 'information producers/consumers,' and 'local/global citizens.' Second, in regard to the educational content of ICT education, researchers investigate SW education importantly: They develop the educational programs and examine the effectiveness of those programs. However, to ensure the relevancy of the educational contents to the future society, institutional support is imperative including facilitating educators' capacities and synchronizing ICT education with subject education. Third, as the educational methods, various ICTs such as flipped learning and augmented reality (AR) are being applied to actual classroom teaching. Research on the educational methods, which is the most vibrant area in the ICT education scholarship, is expected to improve the previous educational methods and to lead the qualitative development of ICT education. Fourth, the previous discussion on the educational evaluation focuses on computer-based evaluations. Educational evaluation using ICT will enable educators to assess the characteristics and achievement of an individual learner accurately and to lead them to apply a teaching-learning process effectively, which will ultimately enhance the effectiveness of educational evaluation. Along with the overall review on the possibilities of ICT education, this article discusses the limitations of the current ICT education and its implications for educational inequalities.

  • High School and College Bridge Program for high school students to learn about specialty training through Mentors with high tech equipment before college admissions has been established. In this study we further developed the previous research experience in 2013 to mentoring program. According to this program, we developed the team learning program and then conducted analytic study on the second year achievement. They became mentees and undergraduate students or graduate course student were mentors. High school students learned how to solve problems by themselves under the mentoring education. The mentees had higher satisfaction in lecture and interest increasing factors at first part of the program. In second part, they showed more satisfaction in new knowledges and recommendation factors. The relationship and intimacy have grown through interaction between mentors and mentees during the team learning. The high school and college bridge program would have significant meaning to develope a customized program for high school students through continuous study.

  • Matrix multiplication is a fundamental operation widely used in science and engineering. There is an approximate matrix multiplication method as a way to reduce the amount of computation of matrix multiplication. Approximate matrix multiplication determines an appropriate probability distribution for selecting columns and rows of matrices, and performs approximate matrix multiplication by selecting columns and rows of matrices according to this distribution. Probability distributions are generated by considering both matrices A and B participating in matrix multiplication. In this paper, we propose a method to generate a probability distribution that selects columns and rows of matrices to be used for approximate matrix multiplication, targeting only matrix A. Approximate matrix multiplication was performed on 1000×1000 ~ 5000×5000 matrices using existing and proposed methods. The approximate matrix multiplication applying the proposed method compared to the conventional method has been shown to be closer to the original matrix multiplication result, averaging 0.02% to 2.34%.

  • This paper aims to present the model of engineering design education workshop for appropriate technologies. Since 2008 Handong Innovation Center for Engineering Education and a Non-Profit Organization, Sharing and Technology, held engineering design workshop during every summer break. We present the contents of the workshop and analyze the educational effects of the program. The workshop is entitled "Engineering Design Academy for the other 90%" because we take it serious that most of the research and development efforts of the science and technologies in the world is just focused on the rich people while the other 90% people in the world are unreachable from the benefits of the modern technologies. By the workshop we tries to provide the college students the perspectives on the worldwide poverty problems and to encourage them to serve the 3rd world people in need through their specialties in the field of engineering profession. The evaluation results by participants are very positive. Especially, we began invite the 3rd world people to the workshop as design problem clients from 2010 summer workshop. The evaluation from them are also very positive. The analysis results on the educational effects of the workshop show that the workshop improves the students skills required by the ABEEK (Acreditation Board of Engineering Education of Korea) including not only design capability but also team work, communication skill, understanding the social impacts of engineering design, engineering ethics, and globalization.
