  • Ethernet is the very successful technology in private local area network. Therefore, we can obtain the advantage to reduce network overhead due to such as protocol translation when to apply Ethernet to the public backbone network. However, in order to do that, it is required to restore the network within 50msec when link failure occurs, in order to provide seamless connections to end users. Currently, ITU-T standardized the automatic protection switching (APS) based Ethernet protection switching system. In this paper, we propose the improved Ethernet protection switching system to minimize the number of Ethernet frames lost when the network is restored from the failure. The proposed mechanism is analyzed by using simulation based on ns-2 and numerical results show that the proposed one provides superior performance.

  • Ethernet has been given a greater attention recently due to tendency of unifying most of transmission technique(not only LAN, but MAN and WAN) to ethernet. Performance evaluation was performed using C language for 10Gbps ethernet Data Link to design the optimum hardware, then internal FIFO size was evaluated. In this paper, MAC core for 10Gbps ethernet which contains high layer interface, transmit engine, flow control block, receive engine, reconciliation sublayer, configuration block, statistics block, and XGMII interface block was designed using VHDL language and Xilinx 6.2i tool and verified using Model_SIM 5.7G simulator. According to the specification of 10Gbps ethernet, MAC core with 64-bit data path should support 156.25MHz in order to support 10Gbps. The designed MAC core that process 64-bit data, operates at 168.549MHz and hence supports the maximum 10.78Gbps data processing. The designed MAC core is applicable to an area that needs a high-speed data processing of 10Gbps or more.

  • In this paper, we suggest a new capability aware spanning tree(CAST) algorithm for Ethernet bridged network which consists of both legacy Ethernet bridges and synchronous Ethernet ones. The legacy spanning tree algorithm specified in IEEE 802.1D standard select root bridge and construct tree based on each bridge's identifier without consideration of each bridge's capability. Thus we note that if the legacy STP may assign a synchronous bridge as a root bridge, the bridge may become a bottleneck for asynchronous trafficbecause of bandwidth limitation for asynchronous traffic. In this paper, the CAST algorithm constructsmultiple spanning tree by using of bridge capability and makes different transmission path for each traffics, can removes this kind of defect. From the simulation results, we can see that the proposed CAST algorithm has better end-to-end delay performance than legacy spanning tree algorithm in high traffic load and multiple hops environment.

  • This paper discusses standardization activities, requirements and enabling technologies for 100G Ethernet and 100G OTN. The need of 100Gbps transport capacity has been gaining greater interest from service providers and carrier vendors. Moreover, optical transport networks based on OTN/DWDM are changing their properties to apply Ethernet traffic which is dramatically increasing. We realize and experimentally demonstrate OTU4 framer with commercial FPGA. The key features of the realized OTU4 framer are parallel signal processing function, multi-lane distribution function, GMP function and FEC function. The realized OTU4 framer has the large signal processing capacity of 120Gbps, which allows to transport about 120Gbps client signals such as $12{\times}10G$ Ethernet and $3{\times}40G$ Ethernet. The realized OTU4 framer has the advantages to quickly adjust to changing markets and new technologies by using commercial FPGA instead of ASIC.

  • This paper is about a physical layer frame security technique using OFB-style encryption/decryption with AES algorithms on Gigabit Ethernet network. We propose a data security technique at the physical layer that performs OFB-style encryption/decryption with AES algorithm with strong security strength when sending and receiving data over Gigabit Ethernet network. Generally, when operating Gigabit Ethernet network, there is no security features, but data security is required, additional devices that apply this technique can be installed to perform security functions. In the case of data transmission over Gigabit Ethernet network, the Ethernet frames conform to IEEE 802.3 specification, which includes several fields to ensure proper reception of data at the receiving node in addition to the data field. When encrypting, only the data field should be encrypted and transmitted in real time. In this paper, we show that only the data field of the IEEE802.3 frame is encrypted and transmitted on the sending node, and only the data field is decrypted to show the plain text on the receiving node, which shows that the encryption/decryption is carried out correctly. Therefore, additional installation of devices that apply this technique can increase the reliability of the system when security for data is required in Ethernet network operating without security features.

  • One of the major trends of automotive networking architecture is the introduction of automotive Ethernet. Ethernet is already used in single automotive applications (e.g. to connect high-data-rate sources as video cameras), it is expected that the ongoing standardization at IEEE (IEEE802.3bw - 100BASE-T1, respectively IEEE P802.3bp - 1000BASE-T1) will lead to a much broader adoption in future. Those applications will not be limited to simple point-to-point connections, but may affect Electric/Electronic(EE) Architectures as a whole. It is agreed that IP based traffic via Ethernet could be secured by application of well-established IP security protocols (e.g., IPSec, TLS) combined with additional components like, e.g., automotive firewall or IDS. In the case of safety and real-time related applications on resource constraint devices, the IP based communication is not the favorite option to be used with complicated and performance demanding TLS or IPSec. Those applications will be foreseeable incorporate Layer-2 based communication protocols as, e.g., currently standardized at IEEE[13]. The present paper reflects the state-of-the-art communication concepts with respect to security and identifies architectural challenges and potential solutions for future Ethernet Switch-based EE-Architectures. It also gives an overview and provide insights into the ongoing security relevant standardization activities concerning automotive Ethernet. Furthermore, the properties of non-automotive Ethernet security mechanisms as, e.g., IEEE 802.1AE aka. MACsec or 802.1X Port-based Network Access Control, will be evaluated and the applicability for automotive applications will be assessed.

  • This paper presents the implementation and performance of the HVIA-GE card, which is a hardware implementation of the Virtual Interface Architecture (VIA) based on Gigabit Ethernet. The HVIA-GE card is a 32-bit/33MHz PCI adapter containing an FPGA for the VIA protocol engine and a Gigabit Ethernet chip set to construct a high performance physical network. HVIA-GE performs virtual-to-physical address translation, Doorbell, and send/receive completion operations in hardware without kernel intervention. In particular, the Address Translation Table (ATT) is stored on the local memory of the HVIA-GE card, and the VIA protocol engine efficiently controls the address translation process by directly accessing the ATT. As a result, the communication overhead during send/receive transactions is greatly reduced. Our experimental results show the maximum bandwidth of 93.7MB/s and the minimum latency of 11.9${\mu}\textrm{s}$. In terms of minimum latency HVIA-GE performs 4.8 times and 9.9 times faster than M-VIA and TCP/IP, respectively, over Gigabit Ethernet. In addition, the maximum bandwidth of HVIA-GE is 50.4% and 65% higher than M-VIA and TCP/IP respectively.

  • This paper proposes the ethernet-based in-vehicle networking method for "body" and "multimedia" domains. The ethernet-based in-vehicle networking method should modify the topology and the layer 2 for traffic shaping. In this paper, we simulate the two ring networking systems, the Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST) and the proposed system with the shaping by the network simulator 2 and evaluate each performance. In addition, we demonstrate the proposed networking system to exchange two kinds of traffic, i.e., QoS data and best-effort data, on the ring network constituting of three nodes. Finally this paper expects to substitute the ethernet-based in-vehicle network for the MOST in advance.
