  • The effects of magnesium and calcium ions on phosphorus removal by aluminium coagulation were investigated with various jar tests using settled raw sewage. Maximum TP (total phosphate) removal occurred at pH around 5~6 with aluminium coagulation, and it decreased above pH 6. TP and $H_nPO_4^{n-3}$ removal efficiencies, however, were kept above 95% at pH above 6 by adding the divalent metallic ions like magnesium or calcium ions on aluminium coagulation process. At molar ratio of Al/P ($Al^{3+}/H_nPO_4^{n-3}$) above 3, TP removal efficiency was as high as 80%, and residual TP less than 0.2 mg/L occurred at Al/P ratio above 6. TP removal efficiency was improved by adding magnesium or calcium ions and the optimum $Al^{3+}/Mg^{2+}$ and $Al^{3+}/Ca^{2+}$ ratios were about 2. The required dose of aluminium coagulant was reduced for equivalent amount of TP removal by adding magnesium or calcium ions, as a result sludge generation was also reduced.

  • Low pressure air flotation (LAF) pilot plant for sludge thickening was installed in Chung Nam N.S. municipal waste water treatment plant to verify its application possibility. Effects of operating conditions such as coagulant dosages and microbubble water ratio on thickening of the mixed sludge were examined. Microbubbles which were generated in the chamber of $1.5kgf/cm^2$ by high speed collision method with foaming agent were used to float sludge. Solid loading of $30kg/m^2/hr$, solid contents in thickened sludge of 60,300 mg/L and SS removal efficiency of 99% were obtained through long period operating LAF in conditions of mixed sludge concentration of 14,400 mg/L, coagulant dosage of 27.6 mg/L, foaming agent addition of 4.0 mg/L and microbubble water injection ratio of 9.7%.

  • This study was carried out to investigate of aerobic granulation by using sequencing batch reactor(SBR). To make aerobic granular sludge in short period of time, we used polymer. In case of SBR, we have studied on physicochemical characteristics of particle size, settling velocity, surface charge, and specific oxygen utilization rate(SOUR) depending on aerobic particle's formation. The results of running SBR with $5.4kg{\cdot}COD/m^3{\cdot}d$ of COD loading rate and 20 days reaction time showed that aerobic particle size, settling velocity, SOUR, surface charge, polysaccharide/protein(PS/PN) ratio were 2.6 mm, 1.7 cm/s, $346mg{\cdot}O_2/g{\cdot}MLVSS{\cdot}hr,\;(-)0.26{\cdot}meq/g{\cdot}MLVSS$, and 2.06 mg/mg respectively.

  • Applications of lanthanum ion and crude rare earth chloride to the phosphate wastewater and fluorine wastewater, respectively, as treatment agents were studied. For the investigation of phosphate removal characteristics according to the amount of lanthanum ion, initial phosphate content was decreased by about 50% when molar ratio of [$La^{3+}$]:[$PO_4{^{3-}}-P$] was 0.25 and nearly all of phosphate was removed when the molar ratio of [$La^{3+}$]:[$PO_4{^{3-}}-P$] to be doubled. The removal of phosphate by $La^{3+}$ appeared to reach equilibrium state rapidly, and it was exothermic reaction since the removed amount of phosphate was diminished somewhat when the reaction temperature was increased. The zeta potential of combined particulate compound of lanthanum ion and phosphate was located for its isoelectric point at pH 5.5 and the turbidity of treated wastewater was found to vary according to the pH in a similar manner as the absolute value of zeta potential of the combined particulate compound did. For the treatment of fluorine wastewater by crude rare earth chloride, the remaining fluorine content after treatment decreased as the dosage of crude rare earth chloride increased. Whereas, the turbidity of treated wastewater and the amount of sludge generated were shown to increase as more crude rare earth chloride was added. The remaining fluorine content and the turbidity of treated wastewater were decreased and the amount of sludge generated was observed to increase according the increase of coagulant dosage under the condition of constant input of crude rare earth chloride.

  • In the present study, we evaluated the efficiency of the drinking water treatment unit processes controlled by targeting high pharmaceutical compounds that are likely to be released into the water supply. In the coagulation process, the removal rate of sulfonamide, an antibiotic, amounted to 22.6~42.1 %, that of naproxen to 28.2 %, and that of acetaminophen to 20 %. Trimethoprim has demonstrated a low removal rate (4.4 %), while the removal rate of erythromycin was 2.4 %; aspirin was not removed at all. When applying a mixture of chlorination and the coagulation process, the removal rate was increased with increasing the chlorine dosage. When the chlorine injection with the concentration of 3 mg/L was applied, sulfonamide antibiotics, acetaminophen and naproxen, were completely removed. Trimethoprim exhibited a high removal efficiency of ca. 98%, while the removal efficiency of erythromycin was about 55 %; at the same time, aspirin showed a lower removal ratio (ca. 10 %). When applying the powdered activated carbon adsorption process, the removal rate was increased with increase of the concentration of the powder activated carbon injection. Sulfonamide antibiotics showed about 18~50 % removal efficiency in the 1 mg/L, the removal rate was increased by at least 80 % in 25 mg/L. The evaluation results of the titration injection concentration of chlorine treatment and adsorption, coagulation process for the efficient processing of the remaining pharmaceutical compounds in the water treatment process, when applying the chlorine 3 mg/L, powdered activated carbon 10 mg/L and coagulant 15 mg/L were removed more than 90 %.

  • A pilot scale coagulation system, which has a function of physicochemical treatment, was developed to treat Combined sewer overflows(CSOs). This coagulation system requires evaluation of optimum design factors whether it has reflected those of lab scale system, moreover, the pilot scale system can be evaluated differently according to the characteristics of influent CSOs even though it has reflected lab scale's design factors. We conducted an experiment using lab scale system that could treat $1m^3$ of CSOs in a day, and also pilot-scale system with $100m^3/day$ CSOs flowed into the Cheongju sewage treatment plant. Therefore the aim of this study is to evaluate a hydraulic similarity between the design factors of pilot scale and those of lab scale coagulation system, and to evaluate feasibility of the coagulation system for the CSOs treatment with optimum operation conditions. From the result of pilot-test, we drew the optimum operation factors of in line mixer and flocculator having similarities with those of lab scale system as well as the optimum coagulant dose. Finally we confirmed that the coagulation system has feasibility to treat the CSOs with high removal efficiency.

  • Dissolved air flotation (DAF) process is generally considered more effective than sedimentation process in raw water containing algae, humus materials, and low density particles. This study presents the treatment efficiencies by the coagulation and flocculation conditions at a drinking water treatment plant using a laboratory tester and the full scale DAF pump system. The full scale DAF pump system (F-DAF) in this study had a capacity of 5,000 $m^3$/d and a hydraulic surface loading of 10 m/hr. F-DAF in D drinking water treatment plant was continuously operated to determine the operational performance and pretreatment (mixing and coagulation) conditions. Results in the laboratory experiment showed that the optimum coagulant (PSO-M) doses required to 2.7~4.5 mL/$m^3$/NTU with raw water turbidity from 13.8 NTU to 56.3 NTU. F-DAF in the optimum coagulant dosage could be operated in effluent turbidity of 1 NTU or below for a month.

  • Chemical sludge conditioning is widely used to improve the dewatering efficiency. It is treated with commonly used conditioners, and then thickened and dewatered with a mechanical device. This paper aims to examine the flotation and thickening efficiencies of sewage sludge for conditioning conditions, such as unaerobic storage time, kinds of coagulant and dosages, and flotation conditions, such as sludge concentration and A/S ratio, using an dissolved air flotation apparatus. Experimental results showed that the specific surface area and specific resistance to filtration (SRF) were significantly increased and the flotation and thickening efficiencies were decreased with anaerobic storage time. However, the flotation and thickening efficiencies faintly decreased in sewage sludges conditioned as $Al_2(SO_4)_3$, $Fe_2(SO_4)_3$, and PSO-M. Flotation and thickening efficiencies in conditioned sewage sludge could be sustained up to 96% at A/S ratio of 0.01 mL/mg or over.

  • Dewaterability, one of the important properties of wastewater sludge, was investigated using a simple capillary suction time (CST) measurement method. CST and SRF have a very close co-relation. It was convinced that CST method was quite effective, and compensating the time-consuming SRF of conventional drainage measuring method. It turned out that one could use the results of CST to find optimum flocculants ratio to improve drainage in wastewater treatment for the tissue paper production at a mill. Since the optimum ratio of flocculants could be determined with the value of CST and COD removal efficiency could be improved with precise ratio of flocculants. Thus, using CST for determining the optimum ratio of flocculants could be economical by reducing the amount of flocculants. Dewaterability might be measured within several seconds using the values of CST in a precise way. The dewaterability could also be useful in investigating the optimum ratio of flocculants.

  • This study examines the optimum filtration conditions in pretreatment of seawater desalination by reverse osmosis. For this purpose, Masan bay seawater is treated through a gravity filter column while $FeCl_3$ is added as coagulant. The conditions of coagulantd osage, media depth, filtration rate, and backwash time are evaluated. The study results show that the filtrate quality improved with increasing coagulant dosage, but head loss rapidly increased. After 4mg/L, the unit filter run volume reduced to less than $200m^3/m^2$. Considering the head loss development, 4mg/L is determined as the optimum dosage. The better filtrate qualities are obtained with depth of 100cm than that of 80cm. The two stage filtration, which outperformed the single stage filtration, is suggested for treatment of Masan bay. The filtration rate of 5m/h is decided as the optimum condition considering the head loss development. At 10m/h, the filtrate quality deteriorated even though the extent was minimal, and head loss increased rapidly. The backwash time of 10 min is decided appropriate.
