A series of laboratory tests was conducted to observe damage process by stress and to understand characteristics of permeability related with rock damage. Rock specimens which were composed of the Cretaceous medium grained granites were experienced of damage stress between 65% and 95% of the compressive strength. Rock deformation by damage process was identified with the elastic wave velocity test. Relationship between rock damage and permeability change was also analyzed by water injection test in the laboratory. According to the results of the tests, damage tends to be occurred from stress level of 80% of the compressive strength and it reduces elastic wave velocity. The damaged specimens with stress more than 80% of the compressive strength showed crack density more than 0.6 and persistent length with good connectivity of cracks. They also have higher permeability than that of specimens with crack density less than 0.6. Considered with the above results, the rock specimens used in this study were fully damaged from stress level of 80% of the compressive strength. Crack initiation and propagation by damage caused good connectivity of cracks through rock specimen. These damage process, therefore, brought high permeability coefficient through water flow conduit in the rock specimen.

An electric wheelchair used to be utilized as a piece of equipment for the disabled and the elderly in the past, but the recent changes to its functions and forms have made it available across various fields and purposes. In this paper, we propose a continuous track type of electric wheelchair prototype to be used in various fields and environments and a monitoring system to control it. A frame stress design was applied to improve its stability during driving compared with the previous wheelchairs. In addition, we provide a convenience for free and easy operation of them using the App. based on android. A monitoring system based on C# was also added to control a large number of electric wheelchairs. As a result of the implementation and performance evaluation, the von Mises stress value was measured 4.401% within the normal range through five times of stress interpretations, and its accuracy of communication for system manipulation was recorded about 98.75%, which means that it has been proven to be safer than the previous wheelchairs.
In this study, the shear behavior between pile-sandy soil interface was quantified based on series of rigorous ring shear test results. Ring shearing test was carried out to observe the shear behavior prior to failure and behavior at residual state between most commonly used pile materials - steel and concrete - and Jumunjin sand. The test was set to clarify the shear behavior under various confinement conditions and soil densities. The test results were converted in to representative friction angles for various test materials. Additional numerical analysis was executed to validate the accuracy of the test results. Based on the test results and the numerical validation, it was found that due to the dilative and contractive nature of sand, its interface behavior can be categorized in to two different types : soils with higher densities tend to show peak shear stress and moves on to residual state, while on the other hand, soils with lower densities tend to show bilinear load-transfer curves along the interface. However, the relative density and the confining stress was found to affect the friction angle only in the small train range, and converges as it progresses to large deformation. This study established a large deformation analysis method which can successfully simulate and predict the large deformation behavior such as ring shear tests. Moreover, the friction angle derived from the ring shear test result and verified by numerical analysis can be applied to numerical analysis and actual design of various pile foundations.
Far ultraviolet IMaging Spectrograph (FIMS) should be designed to maintain its structural stability and to minimize optical performance degradation in launch and in operation enviroments. The structural and thermal analyzes of grating and grating mount system, which are directly related to FIMS optical performance, was performed using finite element method. The grating mount was made to keep the grating stress down, while keeping the natural frequency of the grating mount higher than 100 Hz. Transient and static thermal analyzes were also performed and the results shows that the thermal stress on the grating can be attenuated sufficiently. The optical performance variation due to temperature variation was with the allowed range.

The 4-point bending tests have been performed In order to estimate the effect of TIG-dressing on fatigue strength and fatigue characteristics quantitatively for non load-carrying fillet welded joints subjected to pure bending. As a result of fatigue tests, fatigue strengths of as-welded specimens have satisfied the grade of fatigue strength prescribed in specifications of korea, AASHTO and JSSC. Fatigue strength at 2 million cycles of TIG-dressing specimens have increased compared with as-welded specimens. As the result of beachmark tests, fatigue cracks occurred at several points, where the radius of curvature and flank angle in the weld bead toes were low, and grew as semi-elliptical cracks, then approached to fracture. As a result of finite element analysis, stress concentration factor in weld bead toes has closely related to the flank angle and radius of curvature, and between these, the radius of curvature has more largely affected in stress concentration factor than flank angle. As a result of fracture mechanics approaches, the crack correction factor of test specimens has largely affected on stress gradient correction factor in case a/t is below 0.4. From the relations between stress intensity factor range estimated from FEM analysis and fatigue crack growth rate, fatigue life has been correctly calculated.

Certain structural components are exposed to high temperatures. At high temperature, under thermal and mechanical loading, metal components exhibit both creep and plastic behavior. The unified constitutive theory is to model both the time-dependent behavior(creep) and the time-independent behavior(plasticity) in one set of equations. Microscopically both creep and plasticity are controlled by the motion of dislocations. A finite element method is presented encorporating a unified constitutive model for the transient analysis of viscoplastic behavior of structures exposed to high temperature.

The estimation of fatigue life at the design stage of membrane type LNG tank is very important in order to arrive at feasible and cost effective solutions considering the total lifetime of the tank. In this study, the practical procedure of fatigue life prediction by use of cumulative damage factors based on Miner-Palmgren hypothesis and probability density function has been shown with the corner region of Gaz Transport Membrane type LNG tank being used as an example. In particular the parameters of Weibull distribution that determine the stress spectrum are discussed. The main results obtained from this study are as follows: 1. The recommended value for the shape parameter of Weibull distribution for the LNG tank is 1.1 in case of using the direct calculation method proposed in this study. 2. The calculated fatigue life is influenced by the shape parameter of Weibull distribution and stress block. The safe fatigue design can be achieved by using higher value of shape parameter and the stress blocks divided into more stress blocks.

A Kick Motor, KSLV-I second stage propulsion system, utilizes a flexible seal for pitch and yaw axis controls during combustion. A flexible seal consists of the alternate laminate of rubber and composite reinforcement between forward and aft rings. A Kick Motor nozzle is rotated by the shear deformation of rubber layers. Consequently, the development of rubber, which is appropriate to the usage condition of flexible seal, is very important. A tensile test, QLS test (shear modulus and failure shear stress), and aging test have been carried out to confirm the performance of rubber developed. Test results show that the shear modulus of rubber are 0.4310 ~ 0.4997MPa and the failure shear stress is more than 2.5MPa.
Since many design problems in the railroad, aerospace and machine structures involve considerations of the effect of cyclic loading, manufacturing and quality control processes much fully account for fatigue of critical components. Due to the sensitivity of the Paris law, it is very important to calculate .DELTA.K numerically to minimize the error of predicted fatigue life in cycles. However, it is shown that the p-version of FEM based on LEFM analysis is far better suited for computing the stress intensity factors than the conventional h-version. To demonstrate the proficiency of the proposed scheme, the welded T-joint with crack problems of box car body bolster assembly and a crack problem emanating from a circular hole in finite strip have been solved.

The most important properties in the rubber for a flexible seal are the shear modulus, shear stress, reproducibility of rubber properties from lot to lot and shear modulus variation as aging. This study was conducted to confirm a rubber characteristic for the flexible seal. As a test result, the shear modulus is the range of 0.4310 ${\sim}$ 0.4997MPa, and failure shear stress is above 2.5MPa. After 1 year, the shear modulus of rubber as aging increased about 11.8%.
