  • Recently, the parameters, models, and experimentations, which evaluate the fracture properties of concrete, have been proposed by many researchers, and their developments allow us to analyze the non-linear and quasi-brittle fracture mechanisms. In this paper, a brief treatment of the fracture parameters was presented and the experiments of 3-point bending tests were conducted to compare J-integral($J_{Ic}$ /) with other parameters($K_{Ic}$ , $G_{v}$ , and $G_{F}$ ). The change of parameter values according to the width and notch length of concrete beam specimens was also considered. The load-displacement curves are used to experimentally measure concrete fracture toughness. From the results of experiment, it is noted that the value of $GF$ and tic decreases as the notch depth increases and $G_{F}$ is less sensitive than $J_{Ic}$ . Therefore, the former is more appropriate to use as the concrete fracture toughness parameter. The values of $v_{v}$ and $J_{Ic}$ increase when the width of concrete specimens increase from 75 mm to 150 mm. Therefore, the effects of specimen width need to be considered in determining the concrete fracture toughness.

  • It is known that among many factors, relative micromotion at bone/implant interfaces can hinder bone ingrowth into surface pores of an implant. Loading conditions, mechanical properties of spinal materials, friction coefficients at the interfaces and geometry of spinal segments would affect the relative micromotion and spinal stability. A finite clement model of the human lumbar spine segments (L4-L5) was constructed to investigate the mechanical sensitivity at the interfaces between bone and cage. Relative micromotion. Posterior axial displacement. bone stress, cage stress and friction force were predicted in changes of friction coefficients, loading conditions. bone density and age-related material/geometric properties of the spinal segments. Relative micromotion (slip distance in a static loading means relative micromotion in routine activity) at the interfaces increased significantly as the mechanical properties of cancellous bone, annulus fibers or/and ligaments decrease or/and as the friction coefficient at the interfaces decreases. The contact normal force at the interfaces decreased as cancellous bone density decreases or/and as the friction coefficient increases A significant increase of slip distance at anterior annulus occurred with an addition of torsion to compressive preload. Relative micromotion decreased with an increase of disc area. In conclusion. relative micromotion, stress response. Posterior axial displacement and contact normal force are sensitive to the friction coefficient of the interfaces, bone density, loading conditions and age-related geometric/material changes.

  • The research, development and use of seismic isolation systems have been increasing with the gradual development of structure safety assurance methods for earthquakes. The High Damping Rubber Bearing (HDRB), one type of seismic isolation system, is a Laminated Rubber Bearing using special High Damping Rubber. However, as its damping function is slightly lower than that of the Lead Rubber Bearing, a similar seismic isolation system, its utilization has not been high. However, the HDRB has a superior damping force to the Natural Rubber Bearing, which has similar materials and shapes, and the existing Lead Rubber Bearing has a maleficence problem in that it contains lead. Thus, studies on HDRBs that do not use lead have increased. In this study, a test targeting the HDRB was done to examine its various dependence properties, such as its compressive stress, frequency and repeated loading. To evaluate the HDRB's seismic performance in response to several earthquake waves, the shaking table test was performed and the results analyzed. The test used the downscaled bridge model and the HDRB was divided into seismic and non-seismic isolation. Consequently, when the HDRB was applied, the damping effect was higher in the non-seismic case. However, its responses on weak foundations, such as in Mexico City, represented increased shapes. Thus, its seismic isolator.

  • This study has conducted to develop new gabion wall systems with vegetation base materials for stream bank stability and rapid rehabilitation. Vegetation base materials are primarily compounded with fine soil, organic composts and peat moss as plant fibers, a water retainer and a soil improver. Normally gabion wall systems resist the lateral earth pressures or stream power by their own weight. Therefore, fill material must have suitable weight, compressive strength and durability to resist the loading, as well as the effects of water and weathering. In this project, 100 to 200-mm clean, hard stones are basically specified, and about 50-mm rubbles are also used. Test application of new gabion wall system carried out in the stream bank of a small stream in the Gwangreung experimental forest, belonging to Korea Forest Research Institute (KFRI) in December 16th, 2006. As a result of the analysis of hydraulic stability of new gabion wall system, gabion wall system has highest threshold shear stress when the gabion wall covered by vegetation. New gabion wall system is highly resistant to sliding and overturning because safety coefficients exceed 1.5. As a result of term of slope stability analysis of new gabion wall system by Bishop and Fellenius methods, stability of stream bank was highly increased after the construction of gabion wall. Therefore, new gabion wall system is effective to stabilize unstable stream bank.

  • Globally, the deepening depth in the underground is a situation of the high interest for a purpose of the development of various facilities. The development of deep underground space should be based on the structural stability of rocks. Spalling is known to have an impact on the structural stability degradation in deep underground space. As an attempt to predict spalling, many researchers have proposed predicted conditions in accordance with stress states which occur around the tunnel, rock conditions, and types of rock. In addition, the analysis on spalling method has been verified by using computer modeling such as FLAC, EXAMINE, Insight 2D, UDEC and FRACOD, along with in-situ measurement results. In Canada URL (Underground Research Tunnel), CWFS model (Cohesion Weakening Frictional Strengthening) was used to precisely predict for the state of spalling, comparing spalling modeling. CWFS model has been identified as a reliable method for predicting such phenomena. This study aims to analyze several cases of spalling, and then make a comparison between the conditions for spalling occurrence and the predicted results of model CWFS. With this, it investigates the applicability of prediction of spalling, targeting pillar under deep depth condition.

  • Crack-free joining of $Si_3N_4\;and\;Al_2O_3$ using 15 layers has been achieved by a unique approach introducing Sialon polytypoids as a functionally graded materials (FGMs) bonding layer. In the past, hot press sintering of multilayered FGMs with 20 layers of thickness $500{\mu}m$ each has been fabricated successfully. In this study, the number of layers for FGM was reduced to 15 layers from 20 layers for optimization. For fabrication, model was hot pressed at 38 MPa while heating up to $1700^{\circ}$, and it was cooled at $2^{\circ}$/min to minimize residual stress during sintering. Initially, FGM with 15 layers had cracks near 90 wt.% 12H / 10 wt.% $Al_2O_3$ and 90 wt.% 12H/10 wt.% $Si_3N_4$ layers. To solve this problem, FEM (finite element method) program based on the maximum tensile stress theory was applied to design optimized FGM layers of crack free joint. The sample is 3-dimensional cylindrical shape where this has been transformed to 2-dimensional axisymmetric mode. Based on the simulation, crack-free FGM sample was obtained by designing axial, hoop and radial stresses less than tensile strength values across all the layers of FGM. Therefore, we were able to predict and prevent the damage by calculating its thermal stress using its elastic modulus and coefficient of thermal expansion. Such analyses are especially useful for FGM samples where the residual stresses are very difficult to measure experimentally.

  • The corrosion of reinforcements embedded in concrete causes severe deterioration in reinforced concrete structures. As a countermeasure, epoxy coated reinforcements are used to prevent corrosion of reinforcements. When epoxy coated bars are used, the resistance of corrosion is excellent, but epoxy coating on the bars have a disadvantage of reduction in bond capacity comparing to that of normal bars. Therefore, it is necessary to confirm the bond performance of epoxy coated reinforcements through experimental and analytical methods. Bond behaviors of epoxy coated bars for various diameters of 13 and 19mm and thicknesses of cover concrete of 3 types(ratio of cover to bar diameter) are examined. As the diameters of the epoxy coated bars increase, the difference of bond strength between epoxy coated and uncoated bars also increases and damage patterns showed pull out failure. In addition, finite element analysis was performed based on the bond-slip relationship obtained by direct pullout test and compared with the flexural test results. It is considered that flexural member test is more useful than pullout test for simulating the behavior of actual structure.

  • The seismic isolation system have been applied in order to protect the collapse of bridge by seismic load and the vertical load transmitted from the superstructure. However, the failure and damages of non-shrinkage mortar, isolator and wedge in total 12 bridge were reported by Pohang Earthquake. In this study, the damage mechanism and behavior characteristics of elastomeric bearing by an earthquake were evaluated to consider the seismic isolation system including non-shrinkage mortar and the seat concrete of pier. To discuss the effect of installed wedge and damage mode of elastomeric bearing, the compressive-shear tests were carried out. Also, the mechanical behaviors and damage mechanism for each component of elastomeric bearing were evaluated by using finite element analysis. From the test results, the cracks were created at boundary between non-shrinkage mortar and seismic isolator and the shear loads were rapidly increased after bump into wedge. The cause for damage mechanism of seismic isolation system was investigated by comparing stress distribution of anchor socket and non-shrinkage mortar depending on wedge during earthquake.

  • As composite is the light weight material whose durability and mechanical property are more superior than the existing general material. By taking notice of the composite with light weight, this study was about to investigate the static fracture characteristic of the bonded CFRP structure jointed with adhesive. Also, CFRP double cantilever beam with the variable of laminate angle was designed and the static fracture analysis was carried out. The laminate angles of CFRP double cantilever beam designed for this study were $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ individually. As the study result, the specimen with the laminate angle of $45^{\circ}$ was shown to have the durability better than those with the layer angles of $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$. It was checked that the specimen with the laminate angle of $30^{\circ}$ had the weakest durability among all specimens. The damage data of the bonded CFRP structure by laminate angle could be secured through this study result. As the damage data of bonded interface obtained on the basis of this study result are utilized, the esthetic sense can be shown by being grafted onto the machine or structure at real life.

  • East China Sea (ECS) is known to be supplied with large amounts of sediments form Huanghe, Changjiang and various rivers in Korea. Many studies have been conducted to identify the effects of rivers and deposition process of ECS, but no consensus has been reached. In this study, clay minerals, rare earth elements (REEs) and grain size were analyzed to study the provenance and sedimentation environment of core 99MAP-P63 in ECS. Clay mineral contents of 99MAP-P63 are abundant in order of illite, chlorite, kaolinite, and smectite. The provenance of 99MAP-P63 sediments using clay minerals is interpreted as the Changjiang regardless of depth. As a result of REEs analysis, 99MAP-P63 sediments are very similar to Chinese rivers sediments. Therefore, the provenance of 99MAP-P63 is Changjiang, and the influence of Korean river seems to be insignificant. 99MAP-P63 sediments are generally classified as sandy silt, but the top of the core is divided into sand with a sand contents of 85 %. Compared with surrounding cores, sandy silt sediments arecorresponded to the low stand stage when sea-level was low, and the sediments were thought to have been supplied directly through the paleo-Changjiang. Sandy sediments in uppermost of core are corresponded to transgressive stage. Although distance from estuary was increased due to sea-level rise, it was possible to supply coarse sediments due to high bottom stress, and the paleo-Changjiang sediments deposited in study area were re-deposited.
