This paper presents the thermal problems of steel-concrete composite structure and the basic references in placing concrete into the structure. Based on the analytical investigation, application of the composite structure has the effect of highly decreasing the temperature difference between the center section and the surface section of the structure, though its application has little influence on the decrement of the maximum temperature under the same using material and placing temperature. Meanwhile, its application causes the section decrement of a concrete structure, and in the section which the decrement ratio is relatively large, the restraint action by a old concrete structure takes place highly tensile stresses over a tensile strength. And, the stress is concentrated on sharp edges of the steel-concrete boundary. Both restraint action and stress concentration considerably decrease the reduction effect of the temperature difference. Therefore, the prediction of thermal response and the reasonable steps are required through the simulation considering the factors and the sections related to those problems.
In this study, the stress reduction effect was evaluated for GFRP/Mg single lap bonded joints according to six different adherend shapes. Six different types of the single lap joint specimen were modeled and assessed using geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis. Moreover, three dimensional effect of stress distribution for the different adherend shapes was investigated. From the analysis, the dissimilar single lap bonded joint with the normal tapering and without the spew fillet (model 2) showed the highest stress values. In contrast, the peel stress values of both the square ended adherends with the spew fillet (model 3) and the reverse tapered adherends with the spew fillet (model 5) were 65.8% and 65.5% lower than the reference model.
Surface defects in structural members are apt to be origins of fatigue cracks growth, which may cause serious failure of whole structures. Most structure has a part where stress concentrates such as welded joints, corner parts, etc. And then, analysis on crack growth and penetration from these defects, therefore, is one of the most important subjects for the reliability of LBB design. The present paper has performed an experimental and analysis on the fatigue crack propagation by variety in crack length of surface cracked plate with stress concentration part. The crack growth behavior can be explained quantitatively by using Newman-Raju equation and the stress partitioning method proposed by ASME B&P Code Sec. XI. The stress concentration factor $K_t$ has affected on the crack growth. The crack growth after penetration depends upon the initial front side crack length.
This paper presents the results of the experimental and analytical investigation for the fatigue strength of welded details frequently used in steel bridges, especially for the details with relatively lower fatigue strength. Considering the measured stress fatigue cracking initiated at toe of the transverse fillet weld joining the gusset plates to the web because of the stress concentration that developed as a result of the geometric conditions and the greater probability of microscopic discontinuities at the fillet weld toe A comparison was made of the stress calculated by considering geometric aspect of bead and measured at same position. They indicate that the geometric conditions of the weld toe result in similar stress concentration on both FEM models and test results. The test results were compared with the fatigue criteria of AASHTO, JSSC specifications. Specimens of 80 and 150mm gusset plate configuration tested either respectively equaled or exceeded the fatigue resistance provided by category D and E of the AASHTO specification. It also satisfied the category F and G of JSSC. Both WG1 and WG3 specimen tend to provide S-N curves with a store near -0.3 less than AASHTO and JSSC.
Contemporary architectural structures have diverse and complex forms. Such structural variety demands requisite performance from the connections in the steel structure so that the latter could resist a horizontal force, such as an earthquake. The connections are the all-important components that create the discontinuous form and that support stress concentration, determining the stiffness and toughness of the entire steel frame. In this study, a real-scale column-to-beam connection was constructed in the 600MPa-grade high-strength and high-performance steel, to test its behavior. Its material and welding characteristics were examined in this study, and its structural performance was analyzed by conducting seismic-resistance tests on the full-scale, cross-shaped column-to-beam welded connections with non-scallop, ordinary-scallop, and reinforced-scallop details. The weld ability of the high-strength, high-performance steel was also evaluated, and data regarding the seismic design for practical application were provided.

The improvement of stiffness by the increase of thickness of deck plate or the reinforcement of longitudinal rib is one method among the effective methods to control fatigue damages occurring in orthotropic steel deck. It is likely that the increase of stiffness is effective to restrain local deformation caused by axial load in the steel deck. Therefore, in this study, the parameter studies for the reinforced structural details such as the bulk-head plate and vertical rib which is established to reduce the resultant stresses in the connection parts of the longitudinal rib and floor beam were performed with FE analysis. From the results, it was known that the reinforced structural detail with the bulk-head plate in the longitudinal ribs reduced overall the principal stresses at the connection parts, but the stress concentration increased in the weld toe parts which are occurring fatigue cracks. Also, it was estimated that the reinforced structural detail with the vortical rib in the longitudinal ribs because of the reduction of stress concentration in the weld toe parts is more effective details than the bulk-head plate.

T-joint and hopper knuckle joint models are typical welded joints in ship structure, which are very susceptible to fatigue damage under service condition. Fatigue test and fracture mechanical analysis were performed on these joints to find out characteristics of fatigue behavior. Unified S-N curve was developed from the test results of these two types of joint using hot spot stress concept, and also propagation life was also estimated using Paris' crack propagation law. Residual stress effect on propagation life was considered in calculating propagation life, as was done with thermo-elasto-plastic FE analysis and residual stress intensity factor calculation. Fatigue life of similar kinds of welded joint could be predicted with this unified S-N curve and fracture mechanical analysis technique.
