In this paper, a simple improved 8-node finite element for the finite element analysis of fibrous composite plates is presented by using the direct modification. We drive explicit expressions of shape functions for the 8-node element with bilinear element geometry, which is modified so that it can represent any quadratic fields in Cartesian coordinates. The refined first-order shear deformation theory is proposed, which results in parabolic through-thickness distribution of the transverse shear strains and stresses from the formulation based on the third-order shear deformation theory. It eliminates the need for shear correction factors in the first-order theory. This finite element is further improved by combined use of assumed strain, modified shape function, and refined first-order theory. To show the effectiveness of our simple modification on the 8-node finite elements, numerical studies are carried out the static, buckling and free vibration analysis of fibrous composite plates.
This study has observed that the dynamic behavior of Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) in low velocity impact varies with impact velocity. MMCs with 15 fiber volume percent were fabricated by using the squeeze casting method. The AC8A was used as the matrix, and the alumina and the carbon were used as reinforcements. The tensile and vibration tests conducted yielded the yielded the tensile stress and elastic modulus of MMCs The low pass filter and instrumented impact test machine was adopted to study dynamic behaviors of MMCs corresponding to impact velocity. Stable impact signals were obtained by using the low pass filter. Impact corresponding to impact velocity. Stable impact signals were obtained by using the low pass filter. Impact energy of unreinforced alloy and MM s increased as the impact velocity increased. The increase of crack propagation energy was especially prominent, but the dynamic toughness of each material did not change much. To show the relation between crack initiation energy and dynamic fracture toughness, a simple model was proposed by using the strain energy and stress distribution at notch. The model revealed that crack initiation energy is proportional to the square of dynamic fracture toughness and inversely proportional to elastic modulus.
The factors affecting shear strength and friction characteristics of the fiber-mixed soil can be classified into engineering properties of soil; particle-size, distribution, and particle shape, physical and mechanical properties of fiber; shape, length, diameter, tensile strength, elastic modulus, friction coefficient, and mixed ratio and external factors; confined stress and compaction condition. In this study, a series of shear friction tests and pull-out tests were performed to evaluate the friction properties of fiber-mixed soil according to soil type, fiber type, fiber mixed ratio and compaction degree. The materials and test conditions used in this study are as follows. Soils: SM and ML; mixing fibers: three types of polypropylene fibers(net type 38mm and 60mm, and line type 60mm); reinforcement: geogrid; mixing ratio: 0.2% and 0.3%; degree of compaction : 85% and 95%.
In this study, as a part of the basic study for the application of optical fiber sensors to smart composite structures, the integrity of optical fiber sensors embedded within the composite structures was examined and then the laser signal transmitted through optical fiber sensors during the deformation of host structures was investigated. Firstly, it was found that bending test could be substituted for tensile test by comparing cumulative failure distribution based on weakest link theory and introducing the correction factor. Weibull parameters were obtained through the experiments and the correction factor was found to be applied to cumulative failure distribution derived from bending test. The integrity of embedded optical fiber sensors due to the thermal effect was evaluated by the comparison of the mean tensile strengths of cured and uncured optical fibers. Secondly, relationships between stress-strain curve obtained in tensile test of composite laminate and the intensity of laser signal transmitted through embedded optical fibers were examined and the possibility of the effective damage detection using optical fiber sensors was studied.
The vertical distribution of pore water pressure in the highly saturated sand layer under the oscillating water pressure (water wave) is studied theoretically and experimentally. By experiments it is shown that the water pressure acting on the sand surface propagates into the sand layer with the damping in amplitude and the lag in phase, and that the liquefaction, the state that the effective stress becomes zero, occurs under certain conditions. These experimental results are explained fairly well by the same theoretical treatment as for the ground water problems in the elastic aquifer. The main characteristics of liquefaction clarified by the analysis are as follows: 1) The depth of the liquefied layer increases with the increase of the amplitude and the frequency of the oscillating water pressure. 2) The increase of the volume of the water and the air in the layer increases the liquefied depth. Especially the very small amount of the air affects the liquefaction significantly. 3) The liquefied depth decrease rapidly with the increase of the compressibility coefficient of the sand. 4) In the range beyond a certain value of the permeability coefficient the liquefied depth decrease with the increase of the coefficient.

A numerical solution of temperature and thermally induced stress in a wafer during rapid thermal processing (R.T.P) is obtained, and an analysis of onset and propagation of slip is performed and compared with experiment. In order to calculate temperature distribution of a wafer in R.T.P system, heat conduction equation that incorporated with radiative and convective heat transfer model is solved, and the solution of the equation is calculated numerically using alternating direction implicit (A.D.I) method. In dealing with radiative heat transfer, a partially transparent body that absorbs the radiation energy is assumed and this transparent body undergoes multiple internal reflections and absorptions. Two dimensional (assuming plane stress) thermoelastic constitutive equation is used to calculate thermal stress induced in a wafer and finite element method is employed to solve the equation numerically. The stress resolved in the slip directions on the slip planes of silicon is compared with the yield stress of silicon in order to predict the slip. The result of the analysis shows that the wafer temperature at which slip occurs is affected by the heating rate of the R.T.P system. It is observed that once slip occurs in the wafer, the slip grows.

A series of unreinforced masonry(URM) walls were analytically investigated by FEM for a limited version of seismic in-plane performance. For this, URM walls were assumed to be continum and modeled as isotropic plane stress elements, within which the nature of cracking was propogated. Accordingly, behavioral mode of cracking in URM was modeled by smeared-crack approach. Total of 70 cases were considered for various parameters such as axial load ratio, aspect ratio and effective section area ratio due to the existence of opening, etc. The analysis results indicate that these parameters significantly and interactively influence over the ultimate strength of URM walls. Finally, it is suggested that the response modification factor for URM adopted in the current Korean Standard should be validated considering various forms of brittleness and probable failure modes in URM.

Transient response of temperature distributions in a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) pressurizer vessel wall for the Inadvertent Auxiliary Spray transient has been analyzed with conservatism accounted for the resulting thermal stresses in the regions of the vessel wall which are wetted by the spray water droplets. In order to determine the forced convective heat transfer coefficient at the inner boundary surface of vessel wall where the droplets impinge on and flow down, the transient temperatures of spray droplets when they reach the inner surface of the vessel wall after travelling from the spray nozzle through the pressurizer interior space occupied with the saturated steam-noncondensable hydrogen gas mixture have been predicted. The transient temperature distributions in the vessel wall have been obtained by using the finite element method, and the typical results have been provided. It has been shown that the results of thermal analysis are consistent with representation of the input transient and have plausible physical meaning.

The behavior of the concrete slabs on grade considering the horizontal resistance at the slab bottom, which exists due to the shear resistance of the foundation and the friction between the slab and the foundation, has been investigated when the slabs-on-grade are subjected to the thermal load. Analytical formulations have been developed to include the effect of the horizontal resistance at the slab bottom employing the thin plate on an elastic foundation that is widely used for the analysis of concrete slabs-on-grade and rigid pavement systems. Finite element formulations have then been developed using the plate bending elements and the flat shell elements. The solutions from the analytical and numerical models have been compared and showed very good agreement. The sensitivity of the horizontal resistance to the stresses of the concrete slab has been investigated with various values of the slab thickness, elastic modulus, and vortical stiffness of the foundation when subjected to the temperature gradient between the top and bottom of the slab and the uniform temperature drop throughout the slab depth. The analysis results show that the horizontal resistance at the plate bottom can significantly affect the stresses of the slab when the thermal loads are applied.

The purpose of this study is to quantitatively estimate the erosional properties for cohesive sediments on Keum Estuary. Then the spatial variation was evaluated, through analyzing and comparing the seasonal variation of the erosional properties in Keum Estuary with that of the erosional properties in the other sites. As erosional properties of cohesive sediments are also influenced largely by basic physico-chemical property of cohesive sediments themselves, the impact that the basic physico-chemical property has on the erosional properties is analyzed in this study. Erosional tests are performed under the condition of uniform beds. Total 8 times of tests using an annular flume are also conducted in a location, low times respectively by seasons: the fall, winter. Experimental results of erosional tests show that the critical shear stress for erosion varies in the range of $0.12{\sim}0.36N/m^2$ and the coefficient of erosion rate varies in the range of $120.91{\sim}6.72mg/cm^2{\cdot}hr$, over the corresponding bulk-density range $1.15{\sim}1.34g/cm^3$. Although the calculated parameters of erosional properties are remarkably different in quantity compared with those of other cohesive sediments(lake Okeechobee) and Kaolinite, their seasonal variabilities within Keum Estuary appear to be insignificant.
