  • As a part of improving early response system for senior emergency patients in rural areas in preparation for accelerated transition of Korea into aged society, this study seeks to make effective use of town broadcasting equipments and improve conventional educational ways for the first aid for senior people to boost up availability of private rescue personnel, so that it can contribute to improving capacity to early response to potential occurrence of emergency situations. In addition, this study focuses on profiling current activities of 119 geriatric Emergency Medical Services available in Korea, and also exploring possible ways to improve emergency services for senior safety which can play useful roles of social safeguard in imminent aged society as well as efficient ways to build up infrastructure for senior safety on the basis of opening up senior safety center.

  • In the recent years, An attempts have been made to convergence medical technology and IT technology to overcome the limitations of temporal, spatial, and medical technology applications. In this study, we developed an application s/w to support emergency services for emergency medical services. The developed smart application for emergency rescue activities support can easily identify emergency situation and emergency diary. Then, it can be transmitted to a remote medical guidance doctor so that emergency treatment and hospital response can be performed quickly.

  • This study aimed to develop a prehospital protocol on CPR to patients with nontraumatic cardiac arrest for emergency medical technicians. For the purpose, we prepared a protocol based on preliminary items and demonstrated its validity to confirm a final protocol from March 1, 2007- August 30. 2008. The practical CPR protocol on cardiac arrest victims can be used as means to support quick and exact decision-making on CPR, which will contribute to enhancement of emergency medical services.

  • Recent urbanization, population densification, and the impact of global climate change are causing disasters to become larger and more complex. Meanwhile, in Korea, there is an emphasis on preventing, restoring, and recovering from disasters. However, disaster medical care, which is absolutely necessary to maintain life in a disaster, is being ignored. Therefore, in this study, we selected Seoul as the study area where flood damage is frequent and underground housing is densely populated. Assuming underground housing in the immersion history area as the emergency patient site, transfer distance and transfer time were analyzed. This study considered both accessibility to emergency medical facilities and disaster sites and accessibility from emergency services to disaster sites. Therefore, it seems to be meaningful as basic data for the improvement of emergency medical services.

  • During the past decade or so in Korea, 119 relief squad members were supposed to respord first urgent or emergency cases. The primary purpose of this study was to assess what levels of knowledge and techniques in prehospital care the 119 relief squad members showed. Data regarding the knowledge and technique levels were collected from both the 119 relief squad members (n=63) and the emergency room nurses(n=46). The Results indicated that the 119 relief squad when compared to emergency nurses, showed higher scores for knowledge and techniques in some areas of prehospital care but not in other areas, However, no differences in knowledge and technique were found when the ANOVAs were calculated with two covariates : duration of their career in emergency medical services and frequency of their exposure to lectures on emergency medical technology. In addition, many respondents in the 119 relief squad group rated themselves poorly in knowledge and techniques of prehospital care, The findings imply that qualitatively better curricula should be given to the 119 relief squad members before they are allowed to play an important role in the emergency medical service system. These findings are also discussed in the context of improving the emergency medical service system.

  • Emergency Medical Service(EMS) has become focused due to all kinds of disaster and a great number of casualties. The 119 emergency vehicles' dispatching methods are now being focused, for travel time of ambulances are the critical components in terms of saving human lives. Therefore, this study tried to rearrange 119 EMS regions more efficiently. For this study, Daejeon Metropolitan City's real call cases were analyzed. In order to rearrange the regions, OD Cost Matrix analysis was performed between 800 thousands random points and 26 departments in the Daejoen Metropolitan City. By creating Thiessen Polygon from the random points, a new region was created. As a results, average areas of the regions were reduces from 32 square kilometers to 20 square kilometers, and average time of arrivals are were also improved. Hence, if related organizations plan to rearrange EMS regions, they may utilize this study.
