The measuring of acoustic intensity has been investigated by many researchers and practicians during the last several decades. But due to the lack of measurement accuracy, they have had no practical use. In recent years, the two microphone acoustic intensity method has been developed by the advancement of FFT analysis technique and the digital data processing equipment. This new method of using two microphones gives informations on the noise source survey and the acoustic power of sound radiation source without the anechoic room. In this paper, theoretical formulae for the two microphone acoustic intensity method and the sound transmission loss are checked. The obtained results for the acoustical enclosure of gas heat pump were compared with the classical field incidence mass law. The surface vibration modes for a panel of enclosure were also estimated.

In a compressor, highly impulsive pressure fluctuations induced by a reciprocating piston and valves cause noise and vibration to be so critical issues that low noise requirement always challenges engineers developing it. A muffler is frequently used for reducing these impulsive noise components, but has adverse effects on compressor's performance due to additional pressure drop and heat transfer of refrigerant when it pass through the muffler. In this study, compressible full 3-dimensional CFD simulations are performed to investigate both of flow and acoustic performances of a muffler in use for compressors. On a basis of the analysis results, a parametric study using design factors introduced to improve flow and acoustic performances of the existing muffler is carried out. Finally, improved designs are suggested to confirm the current results.
In this study, the acoustic performance of a dissipative silencer used in the ship with excellent performance compared to its size was predicted and analyzed using a numerical analysis method to reduce the pipe noise. To this end, the performance of the single expansion chamber-shaped silencer was verified using experimental and numerical analysis methods. The acoustic performance of the silencer was expressed using the Transmission Loss (TL), an indicator of its own performance, and the result was derived using the two-load method, which measured by changing the impedance at the end of the pipe. For the numerical analysis method, a general-purpose finite element analysis program was used, and the Delany-Bazley-Miki model with the flow resistivity of the sound absorbing material as an input parameter was applied. Finally, we compared the experimental and simulated results for each of the acoustic performances of the single expansion type and the dissipative silencer to confirm the consistency of the results, and predicted and analyzed the simulation results for four cases according to the properties of the sound absorbing material.

In this paper, derivation of the STL (Sound Transmission Loss) of a square plate installed in an impedance tube is discussed using an analytic method. Coupled motion of the plate vibration and acoustic field is considered. Vibration of the plate and pressure field inside the tube are expressed in terms of the infinite series of modal functions. Under the plane wave assumption, it is shown that consideration of the first few modes yields sufficiently accurate results. When the boundary of the plate is clamped, vibration mode is assumed as a multiplication of the beam modes corresponding to the crosswise directions. The natural frequencies of the clamped plate are calculated using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. It is found that the STL shows a dip at the lowest natural frequency of the plate, and increases as the frequency decreases below the natural frequency. Comparison of the result in this paper with the STL obtained by measurements and FE computations in the reference shows an excellent agreement.
Acoustic load generated by rocket propulsion system is one of major dynamic loads during lift-off phase so that it causes the structural failure and electronic malfunction of payloads. Acoustic loads can be greatly reduced by an appropriate acoustical design of nose faring structures. This paper deals with the acoustical design of the nose fairing structure for launch vehicle. It is well known that a honeycomb sandwich structure is a poor sound insulator because of its high specific stiffness. In this paper, the sound transmission characteristics of four kinds of honeycomb structures for noise fairing were investigated by means of numerical and experimental ways. In order to estimate transmission loss, infinite plate theory by Moore and Lyon and statistical energy analysis (SEA) method were used. The predicted results showed a good agreement with measured ones. These enabled us to determine a proper core material for nose fairing, which shows good sound insulation performance per weight.
Cylindrical chamber silencers with an extended inlet and outlet are extensively used in many application fields to reduce the propagated noise in ducts. The basic attenuation effectiveness in the low frequency region can be explained by the reactive wave action inside the expansion chamber associated with the geometric configurations of the inlet and outlet locations, and the area expansion of the jacket. In this study. an acoustic analysis is carried out for a concentric extended pipe inserted into a simple expansion chamber. An algebraic equation is derived by using the eigenfunction expansion and orthogonality principle in which the acoustic pressures and particle velocities defined on each subdivided surface are expressed by the separable coordinates. By using the proposed analytical method, transmission losses are predicted for several configurations of the concentric extended systems and they agree very well with experimental results.

It is widely known that the sound insulation of soundproof panel is highly correlated to two factors, surface density of material and the frequency of noise. Accordingly, the character of traffic noise released in actual situation is important requisite for determining thickness to determine surface density and material of soundproof panel. This present study selected polymer panel with advantage of light weight and workability and evaluates according to frequency of traffic noise. Polypropylene (PP) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) were selected as subjects based on economic valuation and efficiency. The sound transmission loss of selected polymer panels were compared with the currently used panels such as polycarbonate (PC) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) depending on thickness and materials. As a result, PC showed the highest sound transmission loss followed by PMMA, HDPE, and PP in range of mass law. In terms of acoustic performance on thickness, the transmission loss increased with thickness of soundproof panel meanwhile coincidence dip was observed in lower frequency where had reduced transmission loss. Therefore, it is suggested that after determining target frequency, the kind of materials and thickness of soundproof panel need to be designed so that traffic noise can be more efficiently reduced.
The speech privacy of closed office rooms located in a university campus was measured and assessed in terms of SPC (Speech Privacy Class) values. The measurements of two quantities, the LD (Level Difference) between a source and a receiving room, and the background noise level ($L_b$) at the receiving room were carried out in 5 rooms located in 3 different buildings in the university campus. Each of the 5 rooms was adjacent to both offices and corridors through walls. The TL (Transmission Loss) between the source and the receiver room was also measured to compare the difference of two standard methods, ASTM E2836-10 and KS F 2809. The present results show that the speech privacy of the 5 office rooms is not met the requirement for a minimum SPC values of 70. A minimum LD value of 41 dB between the source and the receiver room should be achieved for having a SPC value of 70 when the mean measured value of $L_b$ at the receiving room is 29.2 dB. That is, the TL(avg) value averaged over the octave bands from 160 Hz to 5000 Hz between the source and the receiver room should be or greater than 40 dB. The most important architectural factor influencing the LD value is the presence of openings, such as doors, and windows, on the adjacent walls between the source and receiving room. Therefore, if the opening of the adjacent wall is replaced by an opening with high sound insulation, the appropriate SPC value of the research and office rooms can be achieved.

In this study, the noise mapping simulation is executed to design an effective barrier reducing noise levels of a school site. The geographical features of the ambient site and the school buildings are modelled in detail in order to consider sound propagation, deflection, and absorption phenomena etc. The main sound source, sound power level of expressway, is estimated on the basis of measured noise levels at several points of the site. The noise mapping simulation is performed by using ENPro, environmental noise prediction program based on ISO 9613 to analysis the effectiveness of noise barrier. Consequently, the noise barrier is designed to meet an environmental noise standard and satisfy low cost and safety conditions.

Recently, as the speed and performance of the launcher and the missile have been improved, it is necessary to consider the acoustic load of launching and flight in initial design step. In this paper, an experimental study on acoustic absorption and transmission characteristics of aluminium vs. sandwich composite structures were conducted. The overall noise reduction was evaluated by performing an acoustic test in the reverberation room, and the acoustic absorption and transmission loss of the structures were analyzed by conducting the sound absorption test inside the structure.
